So, I know that many of you cloth diaper, but I just wanted to offer assistance. I cloth diaper, and have since the beginning with my DD. All the different websites and language can really be confusing, so I'd love to help any farmgirls with the decision to go with cloth diapering! Cloth diapering has evolved SO MUCH in the last 10 years! Over the two-three years a child is in diapers, if you use disposables you'll spend from 2,000-3,000 on disposables! I bought 24 one size all in ones and I'll never have to buy another diaper again. I love cloth diapering! If you'd like more info feel free to email me. I can help you find a system that works for your family!

MIcah,

I use several different brands and have found the velcro ones leak less. The snap don't leak if fastened right, but if you don't get it tight enough around the leg they do. I have Fuzibuns, Grovia, and Sunbaby. We have a store that sells them. I also use some G pants, but have not decided if I like them or not. I'm at the inbetween stage so the small don't fit anymore and the medium/large are still a little big.

I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to husband. I do most of the diapering so the few disposables he uses is minimal.

As for wipes, I have water and rags and that is it. I don't warm the water except when I put it in a container to start, but it gets cold pretty quick. I ring the rags out before using and they are still a little cold earning me a scowl, but no complaints.

Best of luck,
Laurie

OK, I have now committed myself to cloth diapering! My husband is not on board with this at all, so we've compromised that he doesn't have to use cloth when he's the one changing Lucas.

I went out and bought four of the http://www.thirstiesbaby.com/products/diapers/duo-diaper/" target="_blank">Thirstie s Duo Diaperhttp://www.thirstiesbaby.com/products/diapers/duo-diaper/ because they didn't look and sound intimidating to my husband. I'm about to wash these to get ready to use, but I'm a little confused. Do these need only one wash or multiple washes before use? And since I use vinegar as a fabric softener, will the residue affect the diapers?

Any body have suggestions for other diapers to try? I personally don't care what I use, as long as they work. My husband prefers something to just put on and then toss when done.

Also, for those that cloth wipe, how do you do it? Do you just have some dry wipes available and then use water? Do you prefer to make a solution for the wipes to soak in? Any suggestions for what I might like?

Thanks for any help! This thread has been very informative!

Aww Heather! You are such a sweetheart! I had so much fun making diapers for Nora. Yes, I used Mama bird diaper pattern for a start but modified as I went for some things. I used velcro on the ones I made but also did use pins too. I did get Nora once really bad which made me feel absolutely horrible. Just for that alone if we were ever to have another I would find alternatives to pins. :)

I'm going to make the honest try at cloth diapering. I've bought a few of every type and a starter kit of prefolds. I have snappis and covers and oodles of inserts... I hope the boy's skin likes the cloth! Apparently I was not a cloth-friendly baby =/

My son was cloth diapered and we wouldn't have it any other way. We used the plastic pants and snappis. He is now 2 1/2 and potty trained. Yay! For washing I always did a pre rinse and then washed like normal. Never had a problem with smells. Glad to see others that still cloth diaper. I was the only one I knew!

You're welcome, and Alee here on the forum she sews the prefolds, and does them well.

She uses the Mama Bird pattern I think.

I don't know why a snappie would hurt either, that is confusing.

What about the snappi is hurting him? I'm confused! LOL.

Also, Martha, I don't have any patterns! Even if I did-I can't sew a straight stitch to save my life. You would NOT want your kid sporting anything I sew! LOL. I'd love to talk to you more about cloth diapering. Here's the basics:

Types of Cloth Diapers
• Prefolds, Contours, Fitted Diapers and Covers
- Most economical diaper system
- Change the inner diaper and reuse the water-proof cover

• All-in-One Diapers
- Absorbent material sewn into a water-proof cover
- One time use between washes
- Most convenient

• Pocket Diapers
- Water-proof outer with pocket inside to adjust absorbency
- Stuff your choice of absorbent material into the pocket
- One time use between washes

Now, depending on which kind you're more interested in, I can go further into detail. Here's my website: www.diaperparties.com/megan :)

Ok, here's a random question. I have some snappi's but I can't figure out how to use them so they don't hurt my son. I followed the instructions perfectly but it bugs him so much so I just use the prefold as an insert rather than an actual prefold cloth diaper... Any suggestions? The snappi works fine for my daughter but not my son. Any tips?

Martha,

Most people use Snappis-no pins! Also, there are diapers that don't need any pins-they snap closed or they're velcro. :) It's SO MUCH easier now than it used to be! :)

Let me know if you're interested in knowing more about cloth diapering. I'd love to share my love of cloth with you!

Some people use pins still. You can also use a "snappie" the best way to describe what it is, is you remember the little metal clips that used to come with ace bandages (now they are velcro! lol) had small little teeth on the clips to keep the bandage on. Well, the snappy has three target points with those little teeth on them.

There is a TON of cloth diapering options out there though. That is for ones you need to pin together.

I used ones that snapped (with plastic snaps) shut, and ones that just used velcro. There is a TON of options though. I personally never used pins, but I just folded it shut on my babies and put the cover on top, or I used the velcro all in ones. (no cover needed, no folding, it was like a disposable diaper in design, you just put it on, it was bulky cause it had like 10 layers of flannel on the inside, and then had a layer of what they call PUL on the outside, it's a poly urethane coated piece of fabric, to keep diaper from leaking. Closed shut with velcro tabs, much like disposables tabs.

Is this a stupid question? What are people using these days with the cloth diapers? I tried some cloth diapering but my son was very suspicious of the pins. Probably bc he had more needles in the first 8 days of his life than I have in my entire life.
but thats another story...
thanks for any feedback

I went to our local cloth diaper store's consignment sale-I got some BumGenius's, some Fuzzibuns covers, some pro-wraps, and prefolds. Considering I got the start time wrong and ended up an hour late, I was happy with what I did end up purchasing! I also got some Ruby Moon detergent and wipes bits. I LOVE the wipes bits. The detergent I'm not crazy about. I like RockNGreen lots better. :)

ooooh. You have Best Bottoms? I LOOOOOOOOVE BEST BOTTOMS!!!!! I don't have any experience with the Bummis prefolds-we sell them, but I just have experience with the cotton prefolds-they're unbleached and they come in two sizes. http://www.everythingbirth.com/Unbleached-Cotton-Prefold-Diapers-ATD0051-size2.html It looks like the bigger size is quite large. I fold mine in the bikini twist-I just twist it in the middle after the normal three fold. Have you youtube'd different folds? I like the origami fold as well. :) Anyway, measure your prefold and tell me how big it is! :) I don't like Bummis's covers, wetbags, or anything BUT their all in one. I like all the other covers much better (Weehugger is a favorite, along with Thirsties and Best Bottom).

I've only used RockNGreen once so far, and I think my diapers are brighter! I got some BacOut, and I sprayed it on one diaper that still had stink in one area. I literally put my nose TO THE FABRIC to smell for smells, so maybe I'm just being OCD.

Let me know how the RockNGreen works! Now for the pre-folds I got the Bummis but I also had some other ones I think they were just Gerber brand from walmart but neither brand fit my kids. My son is 30 pounds and my daughter is around that too. I tried to find out info on sizes but to no avail. I tried to fold them the typical cloth diaper fold but the pre folds are too small to do that so I've been just folding them and using them as an insert but that doesnt work with the Bummis whisper wrap cover because it leaks through the legs if the prefold bunches up. Any folding advice or size advice? I got the Bummis econo box kit that had 3 pre folds and a whisper wrap and the wrap fits both kids fine its just the prefolds that I am having trouble with. No problems or leaks with the Best Bottoms though!

Yay! Krystle, when you order, let me know what price you're getting and i'll see if my company can beat it! I just put in an order for a friend-a bunch of thirstees and some Hylands stuff along with some Bummis wipes and some Ruby Moon laundry detergent and wipes bits. I'm super excited to try the wipes bits! (For myself!)

I also ordered some RockNGreen-I talked with Bummis about an odd odor in my diapers (Not ammonia!) and they said it was probably due to the homemade detergent. I remember not having an odor with Charlie's soap, so we'll see how RockNGreen works.

Oh my goodness, I LOVE cloth diapering! I got my cloth diapers in and if I had known how easy it was to do and also to save money I would have done it a lot easier! Each paycheck I have been setting aside money specifically to buy cloth diapers. We still have to have disposables on hand for when we go to church or babysitters (just easier for them that is all) but I just can't believe how easy it is! I have been using Best Bottoms, Bummis cover and a Thirsties Duo Wrap cover. So far I like the Best Bottoms the best and the Thirsties too. My son won't keep the Bummis cover on, he outsmarted it I guess. My daughter didn't seem to like how it fit either. I have no idea why but that is what I found out to work so far for us. My next paycheck I am going to try out a Best Bottoms cover with velcro instead of snaps (although my son needs the snaps) and get some more BB inserts. But anyway that is what I have found to work best for me and my kids :) Any cloth diaper used is one less disposable getting thrown in a landfill taking up space not decomposing :)

Both of my boys were allergic to all the disposable diapers. So I had to use cloth diapers and so glad I did . They never got diaper rash with the cloth diapers. Nothing to it!!!

I have a new front load washer, so only place vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. I cannot remember if I used this recipe in the top load or not. I believe I did, using the recommended 1/2 cup mixture per load. I think I used a cup of vinegar in the rinse.

Maybe try doing a hot water load without clothing, and only vinegar (no soap), to remove any soap build up in the machine. I guess you could add towels to cut down on splash, but then rewash normally.

I am from Canada and cannot find soap nuts or Charlie's soap locally, but have found the EcoPioneer products to make my soap in a local health store. Here is the website: http://www.puresource.ca/vervenaturals/EcoPioneer.htm

Anyway, hope this helps you some. Take care!

The borax recipe sounds good! I use Charlie's Soap and really like it. It's safe for cloth diapers. Of course, mine are not in cloth anymore but I still like it. :)

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

My washer is older so I have to watch and add the vinegar in the rinse cycle. How much vinegar do you use? Maybe I'm not using enough? I use up to 1/2 cup depending on how big the load is.

Hmmm....I have never had any problem with build-up on clothing using the borax recipe. Maybe it's because I use vinegar in my fabric softener dispenser. I'm not sure.

I gave up on making my own covers for now and decided to make the plunge and just buy some. I ordered some Bummis Super Brites, Thirsties Duo Wraps, Best Bottoms pocket diapers and I ordered the Bummis starter kit with one cover and three pre folds to try. My son and daughter have different body shapes so when I have used disposables I noticed that one kid would leak and the other would be fine. So whatever works best for each kid I will order more I guess. I should get them in the next week or so, I can't wait! My daughter is starting potty training (we've been starting for 3 months now) but she just turned two in July and I am a firm believer in not pushing or forcing the kid to potty train. Sometimes she asks to use it and sometimes not. Next paycheck I am ordering some better potty panties for her from Imse Vinse that I will use for my son and of course the next baby too when it gets to be that time. Crazy how fast kids grow up! My son is only one and he is in a bigger diaper size than my 2 year old daughter!

I hope my daughter is mostly potty trained by the time November rolls around and I have #3!!! That will be 3 kids in diapers! :)

I did hear that borax will eventually leave a residue on clothing and cloth diapers? I have noticed a residue build up on my clothes after about 6 weeks of using my homemade detergent and I use vinegar in the rinse cycle. I usually get this clean-nut detergent made from soap nuts and use a bottle of that before going back to my homemade just to get that nasty build up off my clothes. They smell clean they just don't feel clean.

Anyone experience that with diapers? Thanks!
