We did a computer program with math, science, and spelling. We also baked cookies. I let her watch some education TV and left it at that today. It was so nice that I let her play outside most of the day.

How was your day?

Our day consisted of math, reading Treasure Island (my 8 yr old) and Robin Hood (my 7 yr old), Story of the World for History (we are just finishing up book two), watercolor and portraits for art. They also ended up watching an Edison Technology show in the History channel, which was followed by something about the French Revolution, which was followed by something about Constantine. We baked brownies, did some things with the chickens, and built a toad house. They also learned about what happens when they bug their mom about wanting to do "Extra work" for "extra spending money at the fair"...but then spend their time complaining about how the work isn't very fun. A very important lesson, one they will probably benefit from more than anything else we did today. ;)

We are getting ready for kindergarten here. DD will be going to public school, basically because I don't have a support system in place where I live and I'd like to be a little more confident before I take on real homeschooling. But I still like to teach her things. Today we put together a puzzle of the world and did 5 worksheet pages consisting of color by number, spelling, reading, math shapes and grouping. For dinner we made pancakes with a "difficult" recipe including eggs, milk, and oil.

We are gearing up to get back to a regular schedule. She is going to VBS all of next week. So I think we are officially starting on the 15th.

Yesterday, my 4th grade daughter, Mia, completed most of her last chapter in History. We'll get it finished today. Then all we have left for the year are Language and Math. Handwriting and Religion as well. Her handwriting is atrocious.

I homeschooled my older 5 kids for 13 yrs and found that if we do more during the bad weather months, then when April/May rolls around, we are either finished or very close to finished and then spring fever isn't quite the derailer it could be! Mia is our "shock", she is almost 12 yrs younger than our previous youngest daughter, so it is quite different to homeschool 1 child compared to schooling 5 of them at the same time.

And, kymomma4, my husband wasn't at all supportive of homeschooling and I just took a leap of faith and did it anyway because I knew it was best for our family. The behaviour issues and stress related bad behaviour vanished within the first month. It took my husband about 2 yrs before he would admit to anyone that we homeschooled, and we had friends/family that were somewhat negative. Hubby is now an enthusiastic homeschooling fan. The 5 older kids are all great. One is a civil engineer, one a hairstylist who wants to open her own cosmetology school, one is a personal financial advisor with Edward Jones. The younger son is now in college (engineering) after 4 yrs in the Marine Corps and the youngest daughter is 21 and attending college on a softball scholarship. She plans to be an occupational therapist, focusing on hippotherapy. (therapy using horses) The three oldest are college grads. Homeschooled kids really do turn out well. Just don't let anyone else define your schooling of them for you. You really do have what it takes!

I love Spelling Workout. It is easy and fast. I just have Bri write her words 3 or 4 times Mon and Wed. Then we have a test on Fri. So far she has got them all right.

Here people can start at community college when they are 14. I would suggest it for anyone who has older children. Our 16 yo took Introduction to College studies last semester adn is now in a literature class. In the fall he will take two or three classes. The teachers at the college are great about helping the students.

Amy, how do you like the spelling workout? I was looking at it earlier for my 3rd grader who CANNOT spell (though he thinks he can!)

We are reading the Little House series and making a lapbook/notebook for each book.

Bri is sick today. So she is watching TV and taking it easy.

She has got an A on all her spelling tests. I am so proud of her. We use Spelling Workout and love it.

We are using Spelling Workout Book A, different math worksheets and manipulatives, The Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Comstock, A workbook of maps and geography, First Language level 1, and just books that interest her.

Finished up a report on our visit to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. Dad is out of town and didn't get to go with so my daughter emailed him a copy complete with pictures in the appropriate sections of text. Made it feel so much more official to her. ;-)

We tossed out work and went to Kemah Boardwalk for the day. We ate lunch then watched the seabirds and then we went into the aquarium and fed the stingrays and watched all the fish.

We did the Houston Zoo this past Thursday. We had a really good time. It was a homeschooling day and the kids got lots of hands on classes and stuff.

It was cloudy and looked like it was going to rain. So we almost had the place to ourselves.

We have a 13,14 and 16 yo homeschooling. On the weekends we write their assignments in their calendars. Two of them have problems reading. Our daughter, started out very dyslexic and now has issues with her vision tunneling down when she is nervous or anxious. Our 13 yo son's reading has blossomed in the last year but he still has issues with new words.

Anyway, each day they do science. writing, history, math, and reading. Our daughter has a cross word puzzle book that she reads a story and then completes the crossword puzzle to solve the mystery of the story. This has done wonders for her spelling.

Our 16 yo took a class at community college last semester called Introduction to college studies. This semester he can take one class free because he successfully completed the class. So, he is trying to decide what to take.

This week seems kind of like it fell apart. We did little on Wed because of group and Awanas. Yesterday we did errands. Today we had to take the puppies to the Vet. So we didn't do "school" work much this week.

Bri and Dad were talking about the map during lunch. She wanted to know how long it takes to drive here or there. So I think that counts. LOL

We started back to school this week too. We began with New Years info as a theme(MMXI), and then it changed to simple machines. I have had the kids (7&5)read about the levers and pulleys etc. and then find examples of those things around the house. Kind of a fun break in the work, but incorporating science as well. I was hoping to finish up today, but both kids are still in bed and one has a fever and sounds croupy. I have a felling it might be a sick day. :(

Are you back to homeschool? We started back on Monday. It was slow going. I figured that it would be after a two week break. We have started 1st grade.

I ordered Modern Curriculum's Spelling Workout, First Language Lessons level one and two. I am planning on getting Horizion Math, and Story of the World and the activity book.

But for now we are reviewing and reading.

Where are you?
