with the grandchildren or anyone.
I recently went to a workshop that taught improv singing. It was really fun. We made up songs with sounds or words. Nothing had to be perfect. The idea was to learn something new, have fun and get a healthy sense of community.
Most people did not know each other and 3 generations participated. The founders of this workshop feel our culture has airbrushed music and people no longer sing together out of fear of not being perfect.
They feel that famlies and communiies that sing together for the fun and joy of it .have a better sense of interconnectedness.
I remmember my Grandmother speaking of her exended family singing around the piano on weekends. I remember campfire sing -a -longs when I was a kid and in my teens. I haven't come across much of this sort of thing in my community now, though.
Awhile ago I sang There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly to my youngest grandchildren. At 1st they just looked at me but after a little bit they joined in. "Again" they would chirup. And we sang over and over until I was too hoarse to continue. Now I'm not the world's best singer but we had fun and I got a whole bunch of little kid hugs afterwards.
Maybe it's time to bring back the family sing -a -long. To heck with worrying about the tune. And if you can't remmember the words just make them up. Have fun!

Once I was driving somewhere with my 3 kids, I think they were about 4, 6 and 9 at the time. All of a sudden I realized that all 3 were singing at the same time, each their own made up song, not paying any attention to each other, but each was content and happy. It was an amazing moment.

What a great idea! I remember when my kids were in elementary school we had an Artist In Residence program. I joined it and learned how to make paper. And also we had a class in renosance (?) singing. I had the best time. I am not the best singer either but love to sing. So I really enjoyed it. My almost SIL plays guitar (and has a band) and so does my step dad. They get their guitars out and we all sing together. It's really fun and the grands really love it. My mom plays piano also. We all love to sing. The kids always ask Jason to bring his guitar when we have get togethers here.

When our children were growing up we always sang when riding in the car, no matter how long or short the trip. We didn't sing with the radio, we sang whatever songs we already knew. We had one that we ocassionally still do but very rarely. They are all grown now. But we all had parts. Our oldest did this one certain part and then when she left we still sang that song but someone else had to do it and it wasn't the same.
My husband sing with the grandchildren when ever we are in the car with them. Sometimes when we are out on the swingset I will sing with them. I love it and I hope they do too!
