I wondered if any of you Mamas could help me out.
What are your favorite brands?
How do you like the pocket diapers?
Can I use my regular old prefolds with the pocket diapers?
What are your washing secrets?

Hey,
I just found a store on ebay, that will sell 3 dozen Diper Service Quality DSQ prefolds, for $28, that is a great deal...
If any of you fellow cloth diapering mama's need some new ones, I don't think you can beat this price, on line or anywhere else.
alpinesilverleaf is the name of the online store.

I used rainbow diapers and loved them - just looked at the site I bought some of them at and couldn't find them. Potty training is finally done here, so I'll probably put mine up on e-bay - you do see them come up on there from time to time. Hope that is helpful

Hey ladies, Kate here, for some reason I couldn't log on, so I had to create my new "identity" but I am the topic starter.
I wanted to share a website I found, www.greenmountaindiapers.com, they are so great. Call them. All of you mama's that are trying cloth for the first time, they are great.

I just bought some of the kissaluvs fitted diapers off ebay, and I love them! They are are so soft, and the colors are cute. I have been using them without a cover at home, so Emme's bum can breathe! Check em out.

Absolutely! I just ordered the wipes with the diapers because it was easiest for me at the time. But I've since thought of making more from lots of different types of "leftover" fabrics around the house. I just don't like using those store-bought wipes. We have some of the Seventh Generation ones for diaper changes out in public where water isn't available, but I much prefer using a cloth just wet with water. It's better for their bums. (Our doc told us to stay away from those until he's much older, and we're listening!)

For some wipes, I cut up hubbie's old white undershirts that are just plain cotton. When he has some undershirts that are old and stained, I cut them up into squares. The cotton is old, soft and broken in. I will order some flannel ones though. Or maybe I can go to a second hand store and pick up a few old shirts to cut up. It would be okay to do that wouldn't it?

Where in Minnesota, Tasha-Rose? Thanks for the tips! We thought about the bidet on the toilet but wondered how we'd keep our (eventual) toddler from playing with it!

I use a wet pail. Its a 5 gallon pail I bought from the bakery. Use to contain apple pie filling....hee hee....

I keep it 1/2 full of water with some 7th gen bleach and borax. I also have a handheld Bidet attached to the toilet tank. I swear I don't know how I cloth diped Grace without this thing!! IT's amazing...NO DUNKING THE POOPY DIPES!!!!

I wash every 4-5 days because my bucket is big and Zoe pees a lot. I treat stains *NOW* with Kirks Castile (used Fels until I learned more about it....ew ew ew.)

And I have to concurr....cloth dipes smell a lot less worse than disposables...Our house does not wreek of baby stink like a lot of people's do.

When I wash, I throw them all in with about half of the water thats in the bucket (The rest is just flushed) and I use 7th gen soap and bleach, then depending on the day, I dry them on the line or the dryer. DON'T USE FABRIC SOFTENER!!! It takes away fromtheir wicking ability as well as their absorbtion ability.

Great! I'm glad it helped. We ordered a layette package from www.earthbaby.com to start out and it was really nice because it included a couple of different types of wraps. We used them all but then made our choice for the ProWraps when we bought the next size up. I highly recommend getting one of these layette packages because...it's EASY! You can try it all out and then make your own choices after Baby comes. (Get another dozen flannel wipes though. You don't have to use a wipe with each diaper change, but you'll certainly want more than just the twelve that come with the package!)

Thanks so much for the info Catherine. I've downloaded it and saved it. I am going to use it as a list for ordering diapers and such. When I think of how much money it will save over two years or so, I think it's worth it. I so appreciate this.

Disclaimer: I did not "write" the cloth diapering document on my web site. But rather, just pulled together information from www.earthbaby.com and www.chooseydiapers.com. I explored using Snappis and pins for fasteners, but luckily, we do not need them with the velcro ProWrap covers!

Oh Juliekay...YOU CAN DO IT! I had the snickers too and I love that I shrugged them off and made it work. I did a lot of research before our Jackson was born and put all of my findings into one 8-page cloth diapering manifesto-type document. I posted it on our web site (http://homepage.mac.com/mandle/FileSharing38.html), feel free to download the file.

We use the Odorless Diaper Pail that we picked up at Babies-R-Us, but really, any old garbage pail with a tight-fitting lid will do. You do not need to rinse or soak the diapers, just plop them in the pail - dirty diapers, wraps, wipes and all. (If you have a particularly solid poopy diaper when the baby gets older and is eating more foods, just flush that down the toilet and drop the diaper in the pail as normal.) We have a front-loader washing machine that has a soak cycle. So I soak the diapers first in cold water with an enzyme cleaner (Bi-o-Kleen's Bac-Out). Then I do a hot, heavy wash with Seventh Generation laundry soap. Safe for my machine and safe for my baby's bum (not to mention, the environment!). DO NOT use fabric softener on cloth diapers in the wash or in the dryer - it can affect the absorbency of the diapers over time.

I wash about every two days. If I had a larger diaper pail, I could go longer, since Jackson doesn't soil his wraps each time. But I tend to wash when the pail is overflowing (where else would I store all of those dirty diapers?!). When he was a wee one, he went through a few wraps a day and many diapers, but now he can stay in one wrap until a really poopy diaper comes along. We have 36 diapers, 24 wipes and about 13 wraps. I always run out of wraps and wipes before diapers.

Cloth diapering is also a lot less stinky than disposables, if you can believe it. The chemicals in the disposables reacts with the poop and pee to make it stink to high heaven. I just wash the diaper pail out (or rather, my dear hubby does that) about every third or fourth time with bleach. No stink!

YOU CAN DO IT! It's easy, rewarding, saves a ton of money and is good for your baby's bum!

Okay, I want to do cloth diapering too, but I am just at a loss as to what to buy. Also, at a loss as to what the system entails from baby crying to taking ooky diaper off,. What do you do with it? put it in a pail, or shake poo off into toilet first? How often do you wash? Can I just wash them in my ALL Free and Clear since I don't do any dies or perfumes in my own clothes? I also don't use fabric softener either, is this okay? I have looked on the internet and have yet to find a fully informative item on the subject that I can put in my files for a reference. Also, nobody I know here is supportive, they just snicker and say "you'll get over that soon enough!" What's a girl to do?

We love our cloth diapers! We bought the first set of sizes online at www.earthbaby.com, but then were thrilled to discover a natural home store locally that sells them. We went with ProWraps and prefolds and haven't looked back. We even use flannel wipes for our son's little bum (almost 5mos old). I just wash them all together a couple of times a week. I thought that would be the worst part - the washing - but I'm finding that I actually really enjoy it. I agree with Kate, it's like meditation. I like caring for my boy in this way!

Congratulations to the expectant moms! Both my sister and sister-in-law are due this fall, just two weeks apart. We're still BABYBABYBABY around here and love every minute of it!

Jenny,
I have some of the flat birdseye diaper squares, I ordered them of the internet. I love them. I love the repetative motion of folding, it is almost like meditation. I really love to look out my kitchen window and see all of the white diapers blowing on the clothesline. I love that by washing, hanging, folding, pinning these on my sweet babe I am caring for her. I get a sweet satisfaction from using my time on lose I love. I feel this way about canning, to. After a long days work I can look at my pantry full of food that I Canned to provide for my family.

Libbie,
there are some great patterns for diapers! I have made some contoured diapers that you fasten with pins, they were really soft flannel with layers of terry cloth in between. I love them, you do have to put a cover over them, though. There are patterns available for all sewing levels, and for different diaper styles. There are all in one or AIO, which are very convienant, and the most like disposables, but I don't care for them, I like to be able to soak soiled diapers, and hang them out to sun the stains, and AOI are very hard to get the stains out, they take lots of time to dry. My new favorite are the pocket diapers!! These are expensive to buy, about $15 for one! But really easy to make. They have soft fleece inside, a pocket to stuff with a diaper, or even a towel, and a waterproof outside. You can fasten them with snaps or velcro. You could save lots of money making them yourself. I will let you know how my pocket diapers turn out!!

Thank all of you for the information - it is really helping me to decide what to use for my soon-to-be new little guy. I think I want to use cloth, actually, I'm pretty sure, but I may try to make my own...yikes! I have to check out the patterns first, to see if I'm up in the night. It might be more cost-effective to just purchase them.

I remember my mother showing me how to fold the "perfect" cloth diaper, with the twist of cloth in the middle for girls and the front for boys, and how to be SURE to put your finger underneath the diaper where the pin will go! What a great memory...

Aunt Jenny -- that's the way I diapered my first in 1970! Folded the diapers, used diaper pins, and plastic pants. Didn't have disposables (Pampers were the only ones) until a year later. They were so perfumey that Missy was allergic to them -- plus I couldn't afford them. One of my favorite things was washing the diapers and hanging them on the line to dry -- even in winter. Times have sure changed. But I'm proud of all you new moms for choosing cloth over disposables. I didn't do that with my second one -- used disposable all the way. I've learned much since then.

We cd our dd and I LOVE pocket diapers. They are like a diaper cover except they have a pocket between the inner and outer water proof layer that you add a soaker whatever your choice is. I'm in love with www.happyheinys.com pocket diapers and what they call stuffins which are made from hemp. If you sew you can visit www.onestopdiapershop.com or www.newconceptions.com and pick up some resonably priced, easy to read patterns. I have several friends that sell cloth diapers that would be happy to answer any questions Connie posted Stacy's site above, Karrie at www.thethreadedbranch.com makes really great diaper covers to use with prefolds, & Susie at www.babysbottomline.com sells may syles and types including my favorite Happy Heinys. I get my diapers from those ladies and they are the best! I also sell some funky tie dyed prefold that are gaining popularity. It's all in what you want and today there are MANY different types of cloth diapers. It's hardly the same system as it use to be when I was in cloth.

Gosh...when I see all the neat diapers and covers now I really am amazed. I used birdseye flat diapers....big old rectangles of guaze like fabric that my mom showed me how to fold..and actual diaper pins and plastic pants. Got me though though and I wouldn't have used disposables. I remember really coveting those nice curity prefolds though. Never could afford to get some. I did child care for years (I was a sitter who never minded cloth diapers on the kids I watched..although not many used them) and loved seeing all the new styles and improvements. Do they even bother to make the old type like I used?? They did make great cleaning rags for years afterwards though. Congrats to all you gals having babies soon...
Sounds like we will have alot of new farmgirls/farmboys this summer!!
