No more Nick channels for me or mine! Not after today's "nurturing environment" showed my 3 year old a commercial for the movie SAW complete with the creepy pig-man and white-faced clown mask chasing some guy in a theater. Great job Nick. Really great. You have totally pissed me off and now, I'm going to have to break it to all those parents out there who turn on a "safe" channel to let their kids watch while they clean the bathroom. Well not anymore, ladies. You're going to have to pop in some movie or something because apparently nothing is sacred anymore. No, this did not occur during Nick at Nite, though that would not have made it much better. Nope, this happened in the middle of Ni-how Ki-lan (I don't know how to spell Ni-how, sorry)! Can you believe that? A show geared to kids under 6 that is on at 11 am. What the H-E-double hockey sticks were they thinking? Then later, right before Spongebob comes on at 2 pm, there it was again. WHAT? That was it. Off Nick went and off it will stay. At least until I get a letter of some kind from them stating that they are sorry and it will not happen again. I wrote to both Nickelodeon and Nick, Jr. to complain about the problem and I'd appreciate it if you do to. I also plan on writing to a few on-line parenting sites as well as a few news sites and Parents magazine, because I subscribe to them. I'm really peeved that this happened. Especially on a network that advertises that they are "like preschool, on T.V.". I am SO not sending my kid to preschool! I was under the impression that preschool was a safe place for kids to learn and play. Not a space for them to be bombarded by images that make them cry and give them nightmares. My mistake. PLEASE, PLEASE, if you have kids, or if you just agree with me that this is wrong, write to someone - make a stink about it. Think of all those parents that have no idea that this is going on and letting their kids watch "safe" t.v.! It is outrageous and I'm hoping that this will be brought to enough people's attention to force the network to make a change. SAW on Nick, Jr....what is the world coming to?

Both good points Melanie and Monica. I just wanted to let you all know that I got an e-mail from Nick today asking me for specifics about "the incident" - What channel exactly (Nick, Nick Jr., etc), where I live (city & state), who my cable company is and a phone number where I can be reached. Frankly, I didn't think I'd get a response of any kind. Companies like to ignore "complainers". I'm really quite shocked that I got a response - and not just a form letter, but a real response. Imagine that. I'll let you ladies know what comes of it.

I didn't realize that Nick was doing this! Unbelievable!! My kids and I banned Zoey 101 on the Disney channel in our home. I can't believe that a "kids" program would actually choose to in some sort of fashion promote teenage pregnancy. All this craziness on tv is really making me consider unsubscribing to cable tv.

Melissa, Things have changed so much! There are so many shows on now at 7p.m. that are totally inappropriate for kids! Even on shows like Survivor and Dancing with the Stars, while they don't have bad language, they wear practically next to nothing! I went back to flag the videos on Youtube and here they are rated TV-Y which says they are appropriate for all ages! They are bloody and violent and so not appropriate for young kids! I could not get Olivia to bed last night because of seeing it!

Thanks for all the support from all you Mom's out there! Especially Alee and you too, Monica! I think it's so sad what people put on t.v. and in print today. It may just be my rosey glasses, but I seem to remember good old fashioned commercials and nothing racey on t.v. before like 8pm. Then after the kids went to bed, my parents could watch their "grown up" shows with bad language and images. Now it seems like any time of day is fair game and you hear all kinds of things that I was never allowed to say growing up on t.v. I wasn't even allowed to say "shut up" because that was considered rude and a bad word. Now I hear seven year olds cuss eachother out in Walmart. When I moved out for college, I tried out my newly found freedom of speech and that lasted about two seconds. I couldn't even tell my friend jokingly to "shut up" with out feeling like I'd just uttered a terrible curse word. I know I was an extreme case, my husband is anything but shy about foul words (though he does not use them in front of children and really tries not to use them in front of women) - he was a Marine after all...but I just can't get over how hard it is to keep these things from your kids! I never thought it would be this tough to keep my 3 year old a 3 year old and not a creepy 17 year old in a 3 year old's body. Ugh!

I don't have cable, but I will contact them also! It is just appalling the stuff that is out there that is marketed to kids! Earlier tonight my hubby was on you tube and my girls ( 4 and 5 years old) wanted to watch cartoons! We have found some really fun videos and Gary put one on for them called happy tree friends that looked really cute and Oh boy, it turned out not to be for kids AT ALL! It was totally gross and disgusting even for me let alone any kid!

That is really sad. My kids don't watch t.v. We have a dvd player and they watch movies if they want t.v. I have bought some episodes of some of their fav shows from when we did have satellite; Max and Ruby,Little Bill, Dora...things age appropriate that they can relate to.
Tori would be mortified if she saw a commercial like that come on. Even with the kids movies out there, she freaks out and has nightmares. Never trust anyone but yourself to know what's going in front of your kids eyes. They are just too sensitive for their own little minds.
I am glad you are raising a stink!! It's about time someone did.
hugs

Jessie

Thanks Alee - I will be calling them first thing in the morning, since it is 5:30pm here in California, I'm sure there offices are closed by now since it's like 8:30 in NY I think. I thought I was doing a good job only letting her watch certain shows that I watch with her, but even sitting right there next to her I couldn't turn off the t.v. fast enough. They will surely be hearing from me tomorrow! My husband said that he would call too, from his cell so that if they are keeping track of numbers it won't register that our house called twice :-). I'm also going to get Grammy and Uncle T to call in to. I want them to know that I can be a real pain in the fanny!

This is one of the reasons why my kids and now my grandkids watched/watch almost no TV. there is almost nothing on that I will or would let them see. Even the cartoons are violent and teach the wrong messages to young ones.

I got ahold of someone in California and he said we have to call the NY office since that is where those decisions are made. So here is the Nick in NY studio number:

Alee - my daughter loves those shows too. She's also really into music and LOVES the new show "the Fresh Beat Band" - I mean she's 3 and knows the words to all their songs and knows the dance moves (and they've only been on for a few episodes now!) It is so sad that we won't be watching it anymore. I may tivo just that show, then watch it first after Maddie is asleep to see if it's safe for her to watch the next day, but that is an awful lot of work and I really want to completely remove the network from our t.v. diet on principle alone. I am so crazy peeved about this. I just know we're going to have issues tonight at bedtime because of this. I tried really hard to play it off and say "those mean kids are wearing scary costumes and trying to scare that man, that isn't nice is it? I'm sure glad we don't know any mean kids like that." And she calmed down a bit, but I don' t know if that did enough to make it okay tonight. I just can't get over it! What were they thinking? Are they selling out to "advertising dollars"?

If you get a number for them, please let me have it too! I've sent messages to Nickelodeon and Nick, Jr. but I really want to make my voice heard, you know? They may not get around to reading those (if they ever really do) for a few months. I'm so upset right now, I'd go stand outside the studio with a sign if I lived in Florida!
