What is the going rate this day? I went on a ride this morning and paid my girlfriend's daughter $40 to watch a one and two year old for 3 1/2 hrs. Is that enough? I figured $10ish an hour.

Sounds like a great babysitter - treasure her!

She is 14 and has 8 siblings, she is the second oldest. She definitely has more experience with children then I do :) Plus, she is home schooled, so available during the day if need be. I don't use a sitter often, only for special things, so I was hoping the pay was at least enough to make it worth her time to help me out once in awhile. It sounds like my pay was about right, thanks.

I think $10/hr is fair, especially if she's good with the kids and they like having her over. People you can trust are hard to find.

How old is your babysitter? I pay my two 14 year old babysitters $6 an hour, but they're usually babysitting for at least 4 hours, and my kids are 11 and 7 so they're fairly self sufficient. Now I do pay an older babysitter $10 an hour, especially our friend's daughter who just finished medical school and is home before her residency, she's the best sitter ever!

I think I've paid $10 an hour before.. But that was for the gal to stay with the kids till we got home late, then she spent the night with us. She lives to far away to take her home at 1 am. So maybe it was $50 for the whole time. She would have been with the kids alone say from 6 pm till midnight..

I think I paid my other neighbor girl $5 an hour to help with my children at a wrestling tourney that I was at. I thought I was going to have to work and not be able to keep an eye on them. I paid for her way in and lunch and all she had to do was keep track of the youngest one. That made out to about $35 I think..

And ya know, if you live way out in the country, $10 is a good price for the babysitter, town is to far for a real job, and as long as it's every once in a while, not $10/hr for an every day job, well I think it's ok.

I think $10 an hour is right on target. I made about $13 an hour about 15 years ago but I was living in a very well-to-do area.

Here is how I look at it. Most likely a teen who is babysitting doesnt have a regular job. If they work minimum wage they will only get between 7 and 8 but they also have a "consistant" income. Babysitting jobs are often less frequent so a few extra dollars is a nice gesture in my opinion.

I guess it depends. I babysit for a couple every once in a while and they pay about what you paid your sitter. I had them just a few hours one night on very short notice and they paid me over $50. BUT, he is a fed. government worker and she is a psyciatrist and a professor. Yeah they bring in well over $250K a year so I think they can afford to pay well!!! They've been very good to us in all seriousness.
