Anyone else wear their little ones?
I make all my own carriers and use them all the time. I can put Greta on my hip or back and get so much done.

Carriers I have made:
ring slings
pouches
a couple different styles of mei tai
obi

Things I have done while wearing:
picked stawberries
made strawberry jam
made a pea trellis
ran a yard sale
hiking
zoo

you get the idea!

My hubby thinks I'm nuts, but I hate manhandling a stroller. I usually end up carrying her anyway! If I do take the stroller, I usually end up using it to carry bags and such.

Anyone?

we are die hard baby wearers. to the extent that I bought a double stroller 2 years ago and it has been used once. my kids refuse to ride in it. I have used just about every method of babywearing and MY favorite is either a SPOC or a Mei Tai because the weight is always evenly distributed no matter which method of wearing. I just made a new ring sling for the babe on the way-despite the fact that I have about a bajillion of my already made ring slings, mei tais, SPOCs, pareos, etc....

I swear by babywearing and so often I see babies in strollers (like BRAND new!) crying unconsolably and all I want to do is shake the parent and tell them to pick their baby up and put her/him on! Parents would be so much less stressed because their babies-toddlers more than likely aren't going to pitch a fit n public-or much at all-all because they had this closeness with mom and/or dad and they weren't made to be independent at such an early age...it's INTERDEPENDENCE we should be striving for, IMHO....

okay enough for now...

Molly-you are my hero for using a wrap. I made a gauzy wrap, but don't use it much. I just can't get it adjusted right. I know there is a learning curve, but I just can't seem to get it.

Alee-I've seen about those studies too. It's sad to me that people don't want to hold their little ones in fear of spoiling them. I say they're only little once, why not enjoy every moment of it. Like you I believe that strong attachment give our children a safe place from which to take on the rest of the world. I think it has made my older kids (6 and 8) the outgoing, independent kids they are today. (I in no way mean this as an attack on other's parenting choices, this is just how I feel.)

Toni-I would love to have a beco or calyx or even an ergo, but my dh would flip if I spent that much on a carrier. Esp. since I have made so many. He just doesn't get it. I have seen a tutorial for making soft-structured carriers. You just have to use heavy duty buckles and straps from climbing outfitters. I haven't gotten enough nerve to try to make one yet. I'm pretty sure I'll make one eventually though, since my Greta is just 6 months old. If you are interested, I know of some great tutorials that take you step by step through making your own carriers.

Hi Michelle!

I wouldn't call myself a diehard babywearer, but I wear my son quite a bit. We don't own a stroller anymore, so if we are going somewhere that we have to walk much, he will be on my back in my babyhawk. My little man is almost 16 months, so he has become pretty independent about being out on his own in the garden and around the house. The only carriers that I have tried are my babyhawk mei-tai and the snuggli I got as a shower gift. I really want to get a soft structured carrier that buckles like a calyx or beco because I hate dealing with the straps on my mei-tai. If I were more confident in my sewing abilities I would just make one, but I know that I would waste alot of fabric and time before I got it right. I am having another baby in January, so when that time comes I think I will try some kind of pouch. How old is your little girl?

Hi Michelle-

I wore Nora until she just got too heavy to wear in front. She did not like her sling but she liked her Snugli Pack. I am going to get a toddler backpack for her as we are going to be walking much more often now with gas prices going up so much. I have a really good stroller, but I love having her close at hand :D

There are lots of studies that show that babies who are worn cry less, have less colic and are generally happier. We had a very easy first year. Nora is one of the happiest babies I have ever seen and I feel like we had a very strong bond. She also is amazingly independent. She does her thing and doesn't stress out about being in the same room as me. In fact she often goes to play with the toys in her bedroom. The whole house is safe for her so I don't worry which room she is in.

She went through one stage of separation anxiety, but that was during a trip home where she had just flown on an airplane and we were in a new house and I was the only person she "knew". After we got home- she couldn't care less who held her. I think it was an issue with being familiar with the location. :D

Funny, I was going to start a thread about this not too long ago! I learned after 'manhandling' a stroller and clunky heavy baby carrier, and trying uneffectively to 'sooth' them with pacifiers, that life is much better for me and the baby if I wear them! Right after my last one (#5) was born, I bought a wrap and have worn her for an average of 5 hours/ day for the past 8 months. She has been the calmest, happiest, sweetest baby we have had. I love it for grocery shopping, yard work, house work, even while I am sitting at the computer, and she loves being 'held' and a better view of the world then just the ceiling!

Good for you for making your own! I just got one of those long woven pieces of fabric so I could use it to wrap her on my back, too.
