Hi everybody. I have 3 little kiddos, two of which are in elementary school, so I know that someday we'll probably be scratching with headlice  . I'd like to have some stuff on hand for that day and wonder if any of you have any experience with some of the organic or more life-friendly products. I've looked at Lice B Gone and was wondering about the efficacy of these. So. . .any suggestions? |

I am all for the preventive route. Long before I got into using mostly natural products, I would treat both my kids with RID the night before the first day of school. Supposedly, it would help to prevent reinfestation for a week (just trying to remember off the top of my head, don't quote me). So I figured it would also help prevent an initial infestation at least until the school nurse had a chance to check everyone that first week. So I would try the tea tree in shampoo method when they start school.
Dang it! Now I'll be itching the rest of the night just thinking about it! LOL

tea tree oil acts as a preventitive. i wash my kids hair with shampoo infused with a few drops of tea tree oil a couple times a week.
What we write today slipped into our souls some other day when we were alone and doing nothing.

I went through this 4 years ago, when my daughter (12 at the time)was on a baseball team and they shared the batting helmets, even though they wore their ball caps on under the batting helmet. She had long hair and I didn't want to cut it.
In a panic at 10 pm on a Friday night (like most moms react), I raced to the late-night drug store and got the strong chemical shampoo. It did work, but you have to be SO DILIGENT about getting out all the nits. For two weeks, I went through her hair every night, and because her hair was long, it was easier to just pull out the hair strand with the nit attached to it, rather than try to comb the nits out. She didn't care, she just wanted them gone! I had her lay on the bed so it would be easier to work on her, as their neck and shoulders get very tired when you're doing this.
After that, I went to the sports store and bought her own batting helmet!

Now I know why I never got lice! I as an 80's girl and curled my bangs every morning and probably used WAY too much hairspray! I can remember after all 4 of us girls got done, there would be a sticky coating to the bathroom sink. I am sure my mom hated cleaning that up before she got ready for work (sorry mom!) I wonder how much $$$ we spent on hairspray!!

You can use mayo, slather it good on their heads, cover with a shower cap, leave it on for a while. The lice will smother. Wash it out good then put vinegar on their hair and pick through it to remove all of the dead bug and eggs. The vinegar makes the eggs easy to remove. When done, wash it all out good and you should be done. If you will lightly spray your children's hair with a misting of hair spray every day before school , you won't have to worry about lice. They don't like spray on hair, they like it super clean!
