I have been working really diligently to potty train Abby. She was off and on for a while but I finally got it down to only a diaper at night. NOW after doing so good for a few weeks, she just stopped. She stands there and pees wherever she is. SHe has been wearing training pants/panties during the day and did really good for a while, only having an accidence once or twice. But now, she just doesn't even try! She knows what she is doing because hse comes and tells me AFTER the fact. I am SO SICK of smelling pee pee i nmy house and cleaning up messes every two hours! Can I just quit and put her back in diapers until she's ten???????? AAAAARRRGGHHHHH!

I have tried the pantiless thing but there were a few problems with that. I get kinda busy running the roads some weeks so I have to do it when I know i'll just be at home...that ones my fault, But when I was able to do that It helped out alot, but then when we got ready to go soemwhere, she refused to wear ANY clothing! I'm still working on getting her to stop being a nudest :) That is probaby the thing that has worked best for her though ( other than that it made her hate wearing anything at all) because hse was more aware of when she needed to pee because she didnt want it running down her legs. If I can be consistent on that for a week or two, it might help alot. I'm just so OVER potty training that I guess I havent wanted to deticate much time to really trying my best top help her yknow?

have you thought of just letting her go w/o a diaper or panties or pants or anything when you are at home? it seemed to do great for Zoe, so just a suggestion. Zoe is 2.5 and is currently asleep diaperless...

oh my gosh gurlz .. i PROMISE you this worked wonders for both of my girls .. and wednesday was amazed that it worked for lucas too .. (i visited .. and he was goin' potty by the end of the week with my 'fun' method). i can't guarantee that it works for every child (and i do believe that children are 'ready' at different ages of their life) .. but i guess all three were just 'ready' when i did this little fun 'potty event'. (i'll be trying it with sofia soon and see how she does .. three times has been the charm so far .. wonder if sofia will love it too!)

well here it is:

EVERYONE LOVES A PARADE! I would get outs pot and pans and wooden ladles and a tambourine and bells and anything else that made 'music'. I would get 'real happy excited' and talk about a parade if and after they 'peed' in the potty. They were so excited that they would indeed, pee .. then we'd gather whatever 'musical instruments' we wanted that day .. and march around the whole house clanging and banging and singing about how proud we were to be a 'big girl' and went to the potty in the potty. IT WORKED! i swear .. i don't think with any of them it took more than a week .. before they 'got' it. and i honestly don't remember them reverting back. i've already used 'big girl' panties (pull-ups) talk with sofia .. but will wait until she is two ... to do the parade with her. (she's 17 months old now) .. and seems to understand reeeeeeeeely fast .. soooooooo .. when i go up next month .. we 'might' try a parade to see how receptive she is). IF this doesn't work .. put it aside for just a little while. she might not be quite ready yet. but she is 'telling' you .. even if it is after the fact .. so she is indeed 'getting the message'.

It was a 'fun' reward thing!

Lordy! now that i think of it .. i did the same thing with Cabin and Creek! We'd RUN to the woods with me sing-songing: "let's go potty in the woods .. let's go potty in the woods" ... after they accomplished this feat .. it was run around the yard time and a 'treat'.

happiness .. rewards .. pride in accomplishment .. i guess for me it has worked for all critters great and small.

give it a try and let us know if it works for your little one?

Rebekah- The best thing if you are worried about the pee smell is to treat that area with simple white vinegar- It kills the urine smell and of course sprinkling a little baking soda down for about an hour before you vacuum will absorb most odors. However, from the few times that a pee-y diaper had dried before I washed it- I have found that it doesn't smell once it has dried- so if you miss that one little spot- most likely no one will notice. Just throw open the windows occasionally to make sure you are getting fresh air in.

One of the best things my mom told me was that she wished she hadn't worried about cleaning so much when we kids were little. Like you said earlier- they are only little for such a small time.

If you sew, I am sure I can find a free pattern for cloth training pants. That way you could make more so you have enough for a couple days?

I bought abby a tiny potty when she was 8 months old..she actually peed on it about once a month for four or five months then she got a little better..It was totally accidental ( I would just sit her on the potty for about 20 mins and read a book to her and eventually she'd pee :) Anyway, there were so many on-off stages in between that but it's gotten down to where she KNOWS what to do but it's just a matter of making the choice to do it and not get lazy. She wears panties half the time and the other half I put her in cloth training pants or pull ups( depending on if I'm out of puull ups or if the training pants are all in the wash). I'm just so dog gone tired of washing pee pee pants. I have been to peoples houses where they are potty training a kiddo and you can tell it just reiks of pee in the house. I'm so aftraid my house is gonna be gross and stink so I wear myself out clenaing, scrubbling, disinfecting, scouring, mopping, washing etc etc ect...the list goes on :) It'll happen one of these days. Like some of the ladies aready said, they dont go off to college in diapers so, no need to worry : )
oh and , I was just saying I am running out of time to give her ..not really but i FEEL like I am. I'm like " OK Abby, lets get past this little hurdle and move on..!" GA, she's not even two yet, It's really more for my conveinince that I want her potty trained RIGHT NOW, but it's all in her own timming eh/

Rebekah- I think you are doing a fabulous job. Just remember- almost every single mother has had moments of frustration during potty training. It is a huge change to the kiddos and yes, sometimes they can be filled with "twerpiness" as a friend of mine would say.

You said you don't have much left to give- are you meaning time or patience?

I haven't started potty training Nora yet, but I can tell she is starting to get to that age. She takes a particular stance when standing and having to pee. She never runs and pees at the same time and she usually squats to poo now as well. I am going to buy her a littles potty today and see if I can get her to potty on it. I know she is only 13 months old so I don't expect to put up the diapers for some time yet, but I think it would be good to try.

I had one that was almost trained and started peeing his pants just to see if he could get my goat. So I used nothing but cloth diapers/training pants on him and if I was pretty sure he was doing it on purpose then the routine was that he had to change his underwear and pants all by himself. It got old for him rather quickly and he was dry. Best of luck to you, just remember to be patient with yourself and your child.

Blessings....

It's just that diapers are EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!! i cant wait to take that outta the budget : )

I switched my toddlers to cotton training pants (with plastic covers for bed time)..the wet feeling might not feel great to her and it saves a bundle with the cost of disposables.

Tate has been doing the same thing to me. I think they do it because they can. They're just testing boundaries. I won't put him back in diapers because then he will win! I even stopped with the pull-ups because he would just pee in them anyway. They aren't that different from diapers really. He doesn't like having wet pants or undies, so if he wants to be dry, he'll go in the toilet. Some days are better than others. Just take a deep breath- it will happen. Just try not to freak out or you may make things worse. Tate gets stickers when he pees in the toilet and after he started the peeing on the floor business, I started taking away stickers and he didn't like that.

I wonder if the shoot the cheerios trick would work for a girl. I mean we can look down and see the water too...LOL Or maybe adding food coloring if she tells you she has to go? I don't know but probably anything to add an element of play to it?

Wow, i remember when I was trying to potty train my daughter. She was about two, she would sit on the little potty and make it rock, announce "It's not a rocking potty" and then pee on the floor next to it. You have to rty and retain a sense of humor about it. i remember a friend visiting for a few days with her twelve year old daughter, who somehow convinced my daughter that it was a good idea to use the potty. But there are always a fe side steps on this journey. You're doing a good job, Mama, just hang in there....Karin

you and me both Rebekah..on the diapers are so expensive...well the pull ups are too(that's what my little one is in/not diapers)..and I have been trying to get my daughter to give those up..she is 3..and some days she does wonderfully even taking herself to the potty for number 2..but number 2 has been the most frustrating..she just doesn't want to do that in the potty sometimes..then some days it's like..forget it..I'll just do both in the pull ups. And like your child..mine is so smart and active in so many areas..it's like..o.k. why haven't you gotten this part down pat yet...but..she'll be ready when she's ready..and I hope that will be soon. I have tried using little incentives..in fact there are 2 very pretty princess sundresses that Naomi made hanging up in the bathroom for her to "win" by having a full day of using the potty with no accidents..she hasn't won them yet.but I'm hoping she will soon. She's getting better at it..but it's slow going.
She did win herseslf a little teddy bear by going to the potty number 2..but that trend didn't keep on track yet..we have on again/off again days with it.
My first 2 learned shortly after turning 2..in fact Naomi was the fastest learner..she had a drink and wet baby doll that I bought her..and I told her..o.k. lets take your baby potty..and if baby can go potty in the big girl potty then you can too..so we made that doly drink and wet in the potty and wouldn't ya know Naomi learned that very day and never peed herself again in her diaper. That's all it took.
And my son learned rather well too..as soon as he figured he could "shoot the cheerios" boy did that make things fun..ha.
but baby number 3 has been a bit difficult.
oh well..she'll come around.

well, I feel better now that I have "permission" just to let her take her time and maybe stick her in diapers for a little longer. It's just that she is soo advanced in every other area that I dont understand why potty training is taking so long to catch on to. She is only 20 months old so I really should just giver her a break. But like I said, she's super active and super super advanced beyond her peers and I just have a hard time letting her be "little" sometimes. It's like, she acts so old that I think she knows better than to have an accident yknow? I know i know, they all grow up TOO fast...she already has, It's just that diapers are EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!! i cant wait to take that outta the budget : )

My youngest will be 4 in a week and he is still not potty trained. I have had 3 boys all who trained themselves around their 4th birthday. My daughter trained herself at 2. As much as I would love to have said that my kids were all trained at 2, it just didn't happen, and I was too busy to clean up messes so didn't mind them being in diapers longer. It will happen. They do it on their own and then they don't have accidents.

My kids also never ride a 2 wheel bicycle until they are close to their 8th birthday but they all read at a first grade level in pre k. Every family is different.

my sister would do this and my mom always thought she did it on purpose. I'd go back to diapers for a while cause she might get sick of them? Does she have any friends that are potty trained? Maybe you could realy dote on them and shell get the hint.

Of my 15 kids...13 are potty trained. It can be frustrating, but they do not leave for college in pull-ups :) Back off a little and restart when you think she is ready.
She'll do it soon. Be patient with your self.
