About how many hours per day (average) to you spend on academics?
There are about four hours of academics in most schools (not including music, art, etc) and a lot of that time is eaten up with discipline.
I'm weighing the advantages and disadvantages for homeschooling in the future and wanted to ask.

We usually go 9-12 with a hour in the afternoon for whatever isn't finished. We also do a lot of other activities throughout the day or week that my kids see as fun things but are really school. Gym things and art things and cool history shows and museum stuff. They have no idea they are learning! I feel like the woman who wrote the book on hiding vegetables in the other food!

About 2 "official at the table with mom" hours in the morning 3 days a week for my sophomore age daughter. She's our last one of 5! It has always varied depending on the kid and the life flow at our home on any given day. This week.... it's been NONE!! She's been on the couch with a migraine, etc. since Monday evening.
Every path has its puddle. We have a choice - Turn around, walk around, or jump in and have fun! |

We usually go 4-6 hours/day,depending on what she's working on and how fast she's working. Today is a molasses day!!! When she was in the lower elementary grades, we did about four, tops.

8am-12noon, My children have my undivided attention. I dedicate this time for school, uniterupted and we don't have any ëxtra curriclar activities out side the home that would interupt that time. I am flexible otherwise.

Eimi is writing on the national novel writing organization website. This is part of her education- she loves to write- they have a forum that she is a part of- they do word wars (how many words of your own story can you write in so many minutes) and she is now doing a script frenzy- 100 pages of script in 30 days.. But she also has other school work to do.. so she has to get her chores and school work done before she can go online. But they do make it stretcccchhhhh out.. come on guys-- the sooner you get it done the sooner you can do whatever you want!

Here in our state we only had to cover 180 days. We did not worry about how many hours a day but usually it was around 4-5.
It depends on the child too. Some it will take longer to do some things than others.

Debra is soooo right. They will stretch it out or they will figure out that if they hurry they can do their own learning, projects, etc. We do mostly child/talent directed learning & these can be adapted to most subjects.

I give them what should just take an hour or 2... but leave it to my kids to stretch it into an all day event :-)

There is some great past information in this section. Go back & look, you will find all kinds of info.
As for me & my house we will continue to hs. This is our 21st year, 5 children grown & 2 more to go. :)
