Posted - Mar 22 2008 : 6:24:54 PM Chatting with the ladies about how "we" grew up- you know, all the bad stuff they tout today and I was talking about kids constantly being sick. Now, little kids especially I understand, but I am shocked at how many kids are constantly sick. I told the girls I get Charlie outside as many days a year as I can- even if I have to wrap him in 3 layers, cover him in plastic to keep him dry, or slathering on a pound of sunscreen, I believev in the healing powers of moving and getting outside. They were a little shocked I would let a "sick" child outside. Now, if they child is feverish or throwing up or something like that, then no. But plenty of times when he has recovered about 75%, we might sit on the porch and play or just go for a short walk. I believe it is healthy!! I was always outdoors at a kid and honestly, I can remember being sick, but nothing more that 2 days at most, except when I had one bad ear infection that took a week. What say ya'll???
Cheers, Heather

Posted - Mar 23 2008 : 6:15:26 PM My kids were never sick when they were little. A sore throat was just that...a sore throat. My three year old grandson had a fever, sore throat and earache last week. They had to take a throat culture to see if it was strep and made him wait two days for any kind of medicine while waiting for the results. I don't believe my kids ever had a throat culture. I really have no idea how I raised all four of mine without a lot of things available today. They now register for baby shower gifts because these babies seem to need a lot more than ours did 30 years ago. I am very old fashioned. Children need lots of fresh air and lots of sleep. I don't think those two aspects will ever change! Susan |

Posted - Mar 23 2008 : 4:27:25 PM I used to keep a little boy who was kept inside and clean all the time (his dad takes 3-4 showers a day) and his mom was fanatical about anti-bacterial stuff. This kid was sick constantly. I think anti-bacterial stuff is the devil and my kids are outside in the dirt all the time. You have to build up their immunity!

Posted - Mar 23 2008 : 08:24:58 AM Heather, you may have a good point there. My daugther is one to drag inside kicking and screaming at night, plus she walks home from school every day. She is rarely sick. The boy, takes the bus home to his Dad's house after school, if he isn't working,. He and his "little" brother hit their school books after school there, then they play video games or watch tv. Once in while his Step mom or his Dad will throw their little butts outside to blow the stink off of them. My son catches colds and is more "sickly" than my daughter is. I think your theory has some merit.

Posted - Mar 23 2008 : 04:31:44 AM Going outside is good for ya, as long as no fever. At least that is what my ma always said. After someone has been sick, or the whole family. Open the windows and air the house out good.
