I just started CDing my son today and I am using prefolds, so I wanted to know how many others out there are, too. Do you Snappi? Pin? I just can't seem to get my prefold to fit within the cover I bought. I have only washed them 3 times before putting them on him, so maybe they will still shrink up a bit, but they just seem huge.

The couple times I have done it I have used a Snappi, but the diaper looks all wonky. I guess it might take more practice. I have read about just folding them in thirds and laying it in the cover, too. But when I did that it was too long. I folded it lengthwise along the seams, but should I have done it the other way? I have the problem of making very simple things super-complicated, so I apologize.

I wanted to kind of ease in to cloth since I have no experience whatsoever with it. Thought I would put it on for wet diapers first, since he is pretty regular, but almost as soon as I put it on him, he pooped, so I guess easing in wasn't for me.

I use prefolds about 80% of the time. I really like them but they do take a little practice. What Alee said is what my advise would be. I use snappis and love them. They work great. Another really good site to check out is www.diaperswappers.com. It's a cloth diapering forum. In the "diaper chatter" section there is tons and tons of info on using prefolds including what style of fold is the best for what situation. Like I have a newborn with BF poo so I almost always use the jellyroll fold to help contain the runny poo, but if I know that she is just going to pee the next time I use a bikini twist fold. But keep in mind my baby is 5 weeks old. What an older child on solids needs might be different. If you join diaper swappers you can post photos of your prefold work and the mom's on there are great about telling you if you are doing it right or how to fix it.
Good luck and don't be to hard on yourself. Mine never look perfect but they work just the same.

I only use prefolds as a last resort when I have accidentally used the last dipe without knowing it. That happens a lot now because Zoe only wears dipes to bed and when we travel and she wets them only seldom, but used dipes get washed regardless..,.just like panties. I don't like prefolds and neither does zoe. She says she is uncomfortable.

When my kids were little, I used prefolds as a soaker pad inside of a regular "you fold" diaper - extra thickness in the front for the boys, a little further back for the girls.

Toni-

Pre-folds are interesting. Technically they aren't completely pre folded, it just makes a soaker pad in the middle for you. Here are some sites that were really helpful for me. I also use a pin, but I have heard Snappis work great.

1) If you do the folding it into thirds, you can always tuck under the extra length. He might be extra bulky up front but that's okay too.

2) If you have little leg "wings" sticking out from the leg holes in the diaper wrap, just tuck them in. I always have to do that with Nora's. Since there isn't elastic in the cloth diaper it's hard to get a perfect fit unless you use a diaper wrap that is at least a size too big.
