...to cloth diapers, that is! Who knew something so mundane and sometimes utterly disgusting could cause my heart to flutter? I am completely smitten! Keep in mind, I have never even touched a cloth diaper (well, I wore them, but not in the last 25 years), and I am currently not pregnant (I think) but am in LOVE with the thought of doing this!

Joining this forum has opened my eyes to so many new things. I know that for many of you, CDing was the only option and you wouldn't dream of doing it any other way, but before coming here, I had no idea what it was all about. I had no notion of the vast bounty of goodness that cloth has to offer. I read some earlier posts on the subject and became intrigued, so I googled and yahood and have spent countless hours seeking out CD info, and I am hooked!

Has anyone else felt the high? I know I am an odd duck, but I can't wait to thread the Singer and start cranking out some dipes!!!

OK, so last night I went through my and DH's closets and cleaned out all the stuff we don't wear, and made two piles. One for Goodwill and....yep, you guessed it....one to make diapers with! Yay for clothes being made into dipes!

I agree, very sweet offer, Julia. I am glad you can send them to the people in Washington who really need them. BTW, I don't think its gross at all, I love hand-me-downs!

I really like your wipes idea, too Alee. The terry side is a great idea for the nasties.

Shawna- you should check out verybaby.com they have a bunch of great info, even if you don't buy from them. They are a source for fabric, patterns, ready-made dipes, and they have a CD forum where you can read what other people are doing & get ideas from them. It is fun to look at their gallery of diapers, too.

Who would have ever thought I would be so loopy over diapers?? :-)

Hey all, Maryjane reminded me this morning of the flood in western washington and the profound needs of many many people over there.. Hard to imagine the devastation they are dealing with. I'll be donating the cloth diapers to them.. thanks so much!! Julia

Julia-

I don't think it's gross. It's just fabric. It washes and can be disinfected. I don't think you get "your" diapers back when you use a diaper service. It's really sweet of you to offer yours. :D

Good Morning Ladies!! I have a BUNCH of cloth diapers that I'm not using.. Baby has grown out of the smaller ones.. They are the pre-cut kind with the nice covers... They were given to me...have been great and I'd gladly pass them along to anyone who wants them... Just let me know.. Is sharing cloth diapers gross?? Sorry, if you think it is.... I didn't even hesitate when a friend of mine said she had been keeping her daughter's diapers for years and years and was waiting for someone to pass them to.. They are in fine condition and the ones that were really stained, or frayed, I pitched... Let me know!! ~Julia

Shawna-

To make your own wipes is very easy. Go buy a yard or two a nice high quality flannel from a fabric store and also some terry material as well. Then just decide on what size you want your wipes to be- usually a bit bigger than you hand is nice. Put the right sides of the fabric together and sew 3 sides. Reverse your work so the right sides are now out. Then sew the last side or just hem the top so you have a wipe-mitt. The terry is nice for the sticky messes and the flannel is nice for the not so sticky messes. I just toss ours in the wash with the diapers.

All you need for wipes solution is water, but you can put just a little lotion and soap in there as well. I usually put a little lavender essential oil in to be soothing and to keep bacteria at bay.

Shawna-

Cloth diapers come in lots of shapes and sizes. I would suggest for you, since you are used to the disposables, to buy Contoured diapers- or make them! They look just like the disposables in shape. They have elastic around the leg and the tops so they nestle right into the baby (no pee pouring out of leg holes). And if you get AOI (all in ones) then you won't even need a diaper wrap!

Personally, Doug and I LOVE the flat folds because we can change the shape to fit her as she grows. We do use diaper wraps, but they just go in the wash when they feel wet to the touch or get a little poop on them. I am really excited to try potty training when Nora starts to walk because I have heard that cloth diapered babies usually learn faster because they don't like the wet feeling! Yay!

well i can say that i never even had a little desire to go cloth. my husband wanted to try with baby 1, so we used one we had from the store, we had no idea what we were doing. on went the diaper, (he did it since he thought it was such a geat idea!)anyway on and lift baby up and off came diaper! t fell right off of her and even if it hadn't the pee would have just went out the leg. what a joke! those are our burp (spit) rags now. NOW 3 kids later while i am researching plastics and asking Q. about what is good for us, well lets just say, i will be putting in an order very soon! and yes, i am excited!!!

I wish I had clothed diapered but due to my situation, I couldn't. But, I do admire those who do. And they are just so cute and soft!!

Cheers,
Heather

when I go into people's houses that have babes in plastic dipes I honestly want to wretch. The smell is ALWAYS TERRIBLE! I had someone ask me once, to my face, if we were too poor to buy "real" diapers...seriously!?!?

I know exactly what you mean! I dreaded the buying the diaper thing. When I got pregnant one of my sisters gave me the advice to buy a package of diapers every week that I was pregnant so by the time I had the baby I would have enough diapers to last a year. WOW. That blew my mind. A package of diapers a week? So started looking into alternatives and I got giddy about cloth too! My DH was ambivalent and said he would try them, but made no promises. And now (and an even better high!) He actually recommends them to people!

We both get a kick about people giving us weird looks like "They must be crazy! Cloth diapers are so gross!" LOL! But our house has never smelled bad from Nora's diapers unlike some of our friend's houses.

I can tell you that I love my cloth dipes too! both my girls were CDed and Zoe still wears them at night. There is joy to be found in washing them in natural detergent and then letting the sun dry and soften them!!
