I'm expecting my 2nd child Jan. 8th. With my first daughter we could not use cloth diapers because of her being in daycare. Now that I'm staying home full time I would love to do cloth diapers. I'm totally overwhelmed with the info I'm finding online. I was thinking about sewing them myself or buying used ones. I would love to have a good stock of them make up before the baby is born.

I would love to find out what patterns worked the best for you and/or which brand you liked and why. The AIO and pocket diapers look like the way to go but if you have a different opinion please enlighten me!
Thanks!

Ah! That makes so much more sense now! I was trying to figure out how in the world you were diapering with less than 8 inches! LOL

Annie- the 7.5x7.5 square- is that a chinese pre-fold? Because for my flat folds the 22 inch square is getting to small for my 4 month old. Thanks!

I am not a sewer either. I find the Kushies sold at babiesrus.com easy for every one to use (no one has to learn any new skills). They are a little on the expensive side, and do take a long time to dry. But, they last longer then some of the others we've had (wonderoos the elastic gets shot fast) and like I said they are designed pretty much like disposable so my husband and others don't have a hard time at all learning how to do them.

They are 7.5 x 7.5 inches square. They seem to be just the perfect size. They are one layer of flannel with the edges surged. You are right! My sister in law made them for me.

Thanks for the great info! Our internet connection has been touch and go for the past week because of lighting storms. So I haven't been able to see the thread...

Do any of you use PUL for the diaper covers? If so where do you get it? Jo Ann's doesn't carry it.

Tasha-Rose: Jan 8th is a great B-day! I do hope that the baby is born on that day. Not only is it you and Elvis's b-day. It was my great grandpa's b-day 100 yrs earlier! Jan. 8, 1908. He was a wonderful man and passed when I was in high school so I really did get to know him.

Farmgirlannie: What size is the wipes you use? Is it just a single layer of flannel w/ edges surged?

I have been sewing up some diapers and getting ready to make the switch. It's fun picking out neat fabrics for them!

If anyone wants flannel flat fold diapers but doesn't sew- please email me and for the cost of the flannel and the postage I will make you some. It takes about 2 minutes to make one, and while I am not the world's best seamstress they will stay sewn. We have been using one set for over 4 months of daily washing and they are holding up fantastic. We are just now moving up in size ( I think I made the new ones too big! LOL) So they can really hold up well.

I use Fuzzi Bunz for my four month old. They are a pocket diaper. I am not a sewer, so I admire all that are making thier own. We really enjoy these diapers. They are easy for Dads and babysitters too. They are a more expensive brand, but still no where near the amount you would pay in disposables.
We use cloth wipes as well. If you are already washing diapers why not throw in the wipes as well? We use plain water and flannel wipes and have never had an issue with rash at all. I just have a spray bottle with water by the changing table, I spray the wipe and viola! done!

I agree with Alee on the folding - it's very versitile to adapt to the baby's age/size. When my kids were little they didn't have the diaper wraps, we had to use plastic pants, but they were really not very satisfactory. They didn't breath and encouraged rash, I think. When my youngest was a baby, they came out with a waterproof fabric version that breathed and was much better.

I just use diaper wraps that can be bought at our local natural foods place. They are a super tightly woven cloth or you can get some that are a "plastic" diaper wrap. They are super easy. I have had so many people remark in suprise that they can't believe how easy my diapering is.

Also what do you use for covers?
PlumCreekMama Posted - Aug 04 2007 : 7:54:44 PM
I get it. Thanks for the link. May take hubby some time though! Do you use cloth wipes? What do you use on them?

Nora is 4 months old and so far I am only having to use a single thickness of flannel- It is all in how you fold the diaper. You can fold it in the Kite pattern like in MaryJane's Ideabook or we use the "Oragami Fold" pattern:

You fold the diaper in to quarters. Then you lay the diaper so the folded parts are on the left hand side and the bottom. The unfolded edges are then on the top and the right hand side. To fold the diaper part you take the upper right hand corner- first layer only and pull it straight to the left so the top layer now looks like a triangle. Then you flip the diaper over and take the square part that is left over and fold it in thirds. The part you fold in thirds is the soaker pad and it is what goes between the baby's legs. Here is a link with pictures. I hope I explained it okay. It works great. It took me about 2 times of folding the diaper while looking at the directions to get it. Even Doug likes this fold.

How many layers of flannel do you need. I am thinking of switching to cloth. I am so sick of buying boxes of diapers.

I raised all four kids on plain old flat flannel diapers. You can fold them so many ways to adjust for size as the babies grow and they are so soft. All you have to do is hem a square of flannel.

I made a few for when babes were itty bitty, but we use the Motherease system.

BTW...January 8th is a good day to be born. It's mine and Elvis's birthday!

I just do flat fold diapers. I did sew some contoured ones that looked like the disposable ones, but the velcro with a dog became an issue. So now I buy or borrow diaper wraps and sew 22x22 (for early diapers) or 30x30 (for intermediate diapers) or 44x44 (for large toddler sized diapers) squares of the "Comfort" flannel that you can buy at Jo-Anns or Walmart. It is very quick and easy to fold the flat folds and there are several ways you can fold them to customize them for your baby. Then you just pin and put on a wrap or sometimes I just skip the pin altogether! Even her dad does the cloth diapers and loves it. He loves how much money we save- the flat folds dry in practically no time and basically they make life easy for us.

The AIO and contoured ones can take a bit more to dry but can be a bit easier if you think you might not like the flat folds- But I would suggest giving them a try anyway. If nothing else, you can use the flat fold as burp rags, window cleaning cloths, something for the baby to hold on to, a nursing screen or whatever. They have been so useful to have around the house.
