The other day we were on a road trip and I didn't want to have to pull over every hour to feed Nora (She usually eats more in the car) so Doug and I decided we wouldn't mind letting her have a little pear juice since she is 4 months old. She LOVED IT!

And now, for the past two days she has been _strongly_ prefering the pear juice! Especially when she is really tired and wants to fall asleep.

What's up with that?! Seriously! And this isn't warm juice either- it's cold out of the fridge juice!

I want to make sure she is getting enough breast milk and only gets the juice as a little bit of a treat or when we are in the car, but I had to kind of trick her into nursing! I am tempted to throw away the juice so she _has_ to nurse, but she cried for an hour before I finally was able to trick her into nursing. I got her started with the pear juice and then switched really quickly to nursing.

She was sucking on that bottle so hard it was hard getting the bottle back from her! Yeesh! I have a feeling she is going to going for foods as soon as she figures out what "real" food is. It makes me hesitant to introduce anything else or she might wean herself before _I_ am ready! LOL

Thanks for listening (reading?) I knew you ladies would understand!

She has been nursing better today, but is still being a bit of a drama baby if I don't get her nursing before she starts crying. I think we are on the downward swing of the nursing strike though- so thats good!

I agree with Holly. It's not necessary to feed at a very young age. They do just fine on breast milk. My mil who is a nurse said that a lot of the pediatricians she works with now recommend waiting till baby is a year before introducing other things as they believe the digestive system is just not ready for it.
just my 2 cents. Hope she is feeling better now.

Alee,

I know it's hard but you're right to stick with the nursing. Whoever posted that it's probably just easier is right! It is a LOT less work for baby. And the fact that it's sweeter in a different way. Nursing strikes happen she won't starve herself to death just stick with it. I wouldn't intro solids soon either - especially with a history of allergies. Babies are fine for up to a year on just momma's milk - I didn't introduce solids until my babies were reaching for them (around 7 months with the last one)and I mean nothing. Stared with bananas and avacados. Cereal isn't really necessary.

If you want to give her other liquids I would suggest weak tea vs juice (just no honey until a year)- chamomile, peppermint or fennel are usually well tolerated and you can add a tiny amount of sugar if you like or some stevia.

Good for you about the formula! It's just not worth it in my book - if you give her another type of milk then I would suggest goat. It's not the fat content in milk or even the lactose it's the casein that makes it hard for babies to digest. Goat casein is totally different from cow and most babies don't have issues with it. That being said it doesn't sound like she needs it. Next trip maybe just try pumping ahead and have that to give her in the car?

Just love her, nurse her lots and don't overdo the tylenol. She'll be back to rights in no time!

hugs,

Holly

The doctor says it is just something viral and she will have to get over it on her own. No ear/nose or throat infection and her lungs are clear. That is the good news. The bad news is all day all she wanted was juice. She was literally arching her back and screaming to avoid nursing. I stuck with it though and she finally caved and nursed herself to sleep. I think we are just going to have to wait to give her juice again. I can't have her reject nursing right now. She is not ready for solids and I am not willing to give her formula. If I had to I would pump, but there is no reason to cave to her rejection when we have been doing so well nursing. So wish me luck!

Poor little girl... she has been running a temp of 100.4 for the last 3 days. I think she might have picked up a bug or something when we took her to Silverwood. I am going to take her into the doctor tomorrow.

Be carful with the juice because juice has a high sugar content. I would definatly dilute it with water!

Same age as my DD, 4 months. I couldn't figure out why she'd cry just when we sat down to eat (we were off on vacation). My mom had me bite open a fresh pear and give it to her to see what she'd do. Well, I had to get it back from her baby grip first. Pear disappeared. And she still nursed just fine. I hope little Nora continues to do so very well.

We make a difference.

It may be just the bottle she likes and not the juice itself. Babies have to work harder at nursing than at drinking out of a bottle, so she may just want to be taking the easy way. I have been pumping and feeding out of a bottle because Sullivan wants it fast. That and I couldn't keep him awake long enough to get full. It was the same with my first son.

Oh you ladies are making me laugh! A Yikes! diaper! lol

I had really horrible food alergies from birth to High School, so I worry about introducing foods too soon.

I started my babies (my oldest boys who are both 6'4" now and in their twenties) on food alot earlier than most folks do now too...by 4 months they were eating rice and oatmeal cereal and all fruits and veggies..by 8 months meats and by a year old nearly everything. Mine had good appetites and have never been sick ever, either. I couldn't satisfy them with just milk. Oldest son could drink an 8 oz bottle at 2 months old and cry for more.
I would for sure dilute fruit juice 50/50 at first. The water is good for them too and you won't be as likely to get the YIKES diaper later.

I realize now that all my children are in their twenties, but when they were small our country doctor/pediatrician told me to introduce things to them slowly at four months of age. My kids were incredibly big eaters...even as babies. We were grinding peas and stuff for them at four months old. At 8 months old, they were so hungry we introduced them to ground chicken! I actually never bought any babyfood except for the desserts. My babies, too, loved pear juice. I don't believe it's as acidic as the others and I know what you mean by having a hard time getting the bottles away from them! At four months old I also put them on 1% milk. My children have had very few illnesses compared to the other kids they grew up with. They are all healthy, almost six foot adults who eat absolutely everything and anything. There's not a fussy eater in the bunch. I'm assuming from your letter that she didn't throw it back up. It sounds to me like you're going to have a good, healthy eater on your hands. You may want to water the juice down a bit. You know...50-50. I think little Nora has some good tastes buds in her tiny mouth. If it didn't agree with her she would be the first one to let you know! Enjoy that little darlin! Susan
