Maybe it is just a change in her natural rhythms, but Nora has not pooped in 3 days. She is breast fed exclusively and she is eating fine. Her tummy isn't distended or looking weird and she isn't fussy. She is 4 months old...is this normal?

As long as she's happy she's probably fine. Sometimes babies who are exclusively breastfed just literally USE it ALL! If she starts being uncomfy then try a little juice and watch out for the picture! He he - it's happened to all of us just not USUALLY at home!

Have YOU changed your diet? Upped your dairy or anything? Sometimes that's more telltale than babe. I had to cut out dairy for a bit.

I wouldn't feed the baby applesauce or karo syrup until a doctor absolutely told me to, and I wouldn't do it until it had been significantly more than 3 days since last poop. Breastfed babies don't always poop regularly, and if the baby is happy, I'd just ignore it. Mine went through times like that, too, and then he'd decide to poop 6 times over the next 3 days to make up for it.

Yes, everyone "thinks" that people turned out just fine bottlefed but if you really think about, there are SOOOOOO many health problems out there and who knows what could have been different if another route was taken. Not to mention with all the mental health problems that may have been avoided with a little more bonding.

I do agree that each to their own works in the end however, who am I to say!

Tasha- It is amazing what some people have fed their kids and the kids have been fine. I have read how horrible other mammals milk can be for human babies until they are older. Their kidneys just aren't set up to deal with high levels of protien and such.

But to each their own, I suppose. I enjoy breastfeeding and I do pump so when I am away from her she can still be fed breastmilk. She just zonked out- poor little tyke! She must be so tired. She didn't really get a good long nap today like she normally does.

Zoe used to get constipated or runny when she was newer too. I think it's normal, but as long as she has enough pee pants and is still nursing she should be okay. BFed babes have runnier poop as it is. I second the karo syrup if you can express any milk (I can't for some reason....I produce like crazy but CANNOT pump.)

A funny and somewhat related sidenote: my MIL told me after Zoe was born and we had informed everyone that we were exclusively bfing that " well, cows milk and karo worked just fine for me!" I filled her in (the former nurse) that of course it worked. The cows milk constipated you and the karo relieved you. Breast is best. She was none too pleased nor was she wrong about it being just fine for her (she can't be wrong.....EVER. Oy.)

ROFL! Oh Julie! We have had our own fair share of those moments! I think she will be okay for now, but I will see how it goes. If she doesn't work it out in the next day or so I think I will be a little more concerned. She is completely happy and is wiggling around on the floor, grabbing her toys and smiling right now.

I really appreciate all your advice and shared experiences. It helps to know how others have dealt with this before and things to watch out for! :)

I have heard of doing the same thing ....but never did try it. My kids seemed to have more of the problem of the adorable baby in Julie's picture above. Yikes.
For sure trust your instincts.

Alee, this happened to my son when I was breast feeding. The doctor had me feed him a small bottle of warm water with about 2 tblsp. of white Karo syrup in it. It worked like a charm and he liked it because it was sweet. Actually his first taste of something sweet. You might try it. It's not something that will hurt her in any way even if it doesn't do the trick for her.

Yeah Alee if she seems "normal" otherwise...for example she is her alert and active self, not fussier then normal and still nursing...don't worry...trust your momma instincts if you are in tune with her and I am sure you are you will know if something is really wrong.

I don't think I would worry either but if she starts to strain you should call your Dr. I remember having to dip a rectal thermometer in baby shampoo and inserting it. It worked! Wow, I had forgotten ALL about that until just now. That "baby" is now 23 is 6'5 and 270lbs!

Babies who are exclusively breastfed will do that sometimes. The breastmilk is so compatable with thier systems that they will digest it to the point of not having any excrament. As long as she continues to have wet diapers, there is nothing to worry about. Sometimes they will go a month or longer with out a bm.

Oh too funny. Been there and while it is funny now it was not then. At four monthes you might try apple juice or apple sauce. Great for constipation. MB
