Hi gals! I'm posting this here, because I'm usually here, and I thought one of you might have this info. I came across this old "vase" that belonged to my Great Aunt in San Francisco. I'm not sure of any other info however and it's really got me stumped because the bottom is detached and it looks like it could not hold water. So.....my question is....what is it for??? If anyone has ideas, I would appreciate it much!! Thanks!

Extremely mysterious! I haven't listed it in my shop yet, because I feel strange saying I have a "very heavy and somewhat intriguing brass thing" for sale :) How much does one charge for something like that anyway???! LOL!

I'm with Sarah and Diana, it looks like a lamp base. I sold antiques for 20+ years and it's nothing I've ever come across.

I was going to say lamp base too...but there is no exit point for an electric cord to come out of the base of the "lamp".....mysterious!!

Oh Robin, I like that idea! That would account for the removable base and the open top as well. Thanks!

I think it is a Jardinaire, or a plant stand.

Hi Diane! It looks like it was not welded...we don't see any slag or anything like that...It did have four little felt circles on the bottom that were "holding" it on and when I removed them I found that the bottom piece just fell off. You would think that it would be "threaded" etc, if it were meant to be taken on and off however :(

Is the bottom acually removeable or is the weld corroded and the bottom fell off?

Happy to be a "Raggedy Ann" in a Barbie World!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Cathy, that's just what I thought :) Sarah, that's a great idea that I had not considered! Sherone, that IS one that I've considered because my great aunt supposedly owned one of the first pet cemeteries. But then why would it be open on top????? Such a curiosity! I really need to look into the ashtray idea...off to research! Thanks ladies!

Is it something for smoking? Like a fancy ash tray? That would explain the bottom coming off.

Not much help, but I think it looks like the bottle Jeannie lived in on the old tv show "I Dream of Jeannie".

Very good idea, Carol! If I can't figure out it's true purpose, at least I can do that with it :)

Well, I would use it to hide my garage sale money. But other than that I don't know. It is kinda cool
