Howdy!
Does anyone out there have a cottage business of naturally dying yarn? I'm not so great at dying things myself.
I have about half the yarn I need to make a sweater, and I'll be ordering the other half once the seller looks through and finds what I need. I would LOVE to have the "natural colored" wool dyed in a shade of purple with natural dyes. I love all kinds of purple, but a long time ago, my knitting teacher told me I have to go with blue undertones ( vs red) due to my coloring. I hope that makes sense.
The yarn is from Romboullet sheep, and it comes from the grower in Idaho. I met the grower when I visted the Farmer's Market in Moscow, ID. My total yarn investment for the sweater is going to be about $30, but I have NO idea what dyers charge. The yarn is in those kind of twisted up skeins that you roll into a ball. Each skein is about 12 ounces.

Mary - have you heard about the Yarn Underground. They are a brand new yarn store in Moscow. They specialize in helping people make their own yarn as well as selling a nice variety of yarns. I have not been there yet but I follow them religiously on facebook. They are at 114 1/2 3rd street. They may be able to get you in touch with a local dyer or help you dye it yourself.

Hi Mary,
Kool Aid is a good method... here's a link to dyeing with Kool Aid since the lady does a much better explanation than I ever could give ;^)
http://www.woolfestival.com/articles/koolaid.htm And if you want a darker shade use more Kool Aid packets per water ratio... remember, you do not add sugar. Just the packet for the color. And wear something that if you splash it with the mixture you won't be upset because it will stain.
If you don't get a color that you desire, you may want to go to Dharma Trading Co. www.dharmatrading.com They have natural dyes, too. I've used the procion dyes in the past & have been pleased with the results. But caution must be used with them because they are powders and you don't want to inhale them or make a dusty mess.
Another source may be to check out your local library to see if they have any books on plant dyes or even search online. Some fiber arts websites have a wealth of information.

wow that sounds so interesting. I just started reading up on doing this but have not yet really done it myself yet. Hope it all works out for you. have you tried using grape juice for a nice purple color? Just wondering...bev
