I don't even know if this is the right forum for this. If not please let me know.
My friend and I went to a church sale and two estate sale today. I got a great antique sewing table with the original brass locks still intact. It definitely needs to be repainted but it has great lines. I also got 10 metal folding chairs that we need for hubby's fight nights and a huge schoolroom chalkboard on a wooden base. You can flip the chalkboard over to use both sides. I got everything for $40! Then off to the estate sale. My friend and I are the ones in the basement and garage going through the "junk". It was run by a company so most things were overpriced but I managed to get a great bowl, a wool/mohair blanket from Scotland and (don't laugh) a vintage blank and white porcelain enamel male urinal. It was new in the original box and would make a great planter if I don't sell it. I spent $11 there.
At the next yard sale that we happened upon they had wonderful junk but it was way overpriced. Still I managed to come up with a pair of wooden shoe forms (you put them in your shoes to keep their shape) that I will probably use as a towel hook because they have knobs on them and a cast iron candle holder that you hang on the wall. It has a really big hoop thing above where you would put the candle. Anyone know what it is for? Anyway I got those things for $6.
After that my hubby called and got and because I was only supposed to go to one sale and I had been out for 4 hours. I stopped at the farmers stand and got him some heirloom tomatoes as a peace offering.
I will try and take some pictures tomorrow.
Oh I know you girls would appreciate this. I found several anatomy books at the recycle bin the other day and have sold two for $22 already. Trash to treasure!

Good find Kate. I sold two matching wool braided rugs from NoCarolina at my last yard sale for $50. They were about 6x9 and in excellent condition. l know the lady thought she got the deal of the century, but she didn't know I only paid $2 for them, so I made a good profit. I tried to get my daughter and a friend at the time to take them and both declined. I had no place to use them. If I would just sell more of those killer bargains, I'd be rich. |

I love to read about the treasures of others. I guess my best find was several years ago before we moved from Arizona to Texas. Anyhoo, my friend Pat (who always says...."I feel deprived if I can't go to at least one Estate sale or garage/yard sale a week")...we found a multi family yard sale in a little community called Lehi. I found a wool rug folded up ...and had Pat help me unfold it to see what condition it was in. Looked great.....beautiful wool rug. I asked an old man there "how much for the rug???"........he replied "$65.00"......and I took it. When I got home I spread it out in our Arizona room and vacuumed it....and fortunately, our rug cleaning guy came over to pick up a piece of equipment he had left at our house a few days earlier. When he saw the rug he said "wow"....very emphatically. Asked how much I paid for it.........then was dumbfounded. He looked at it for a while and said it was hand woven, hand dyed wool........and conservatively was worth $3,000.00. Since then I have had 2 other similar estimates. I use it in our bedroom.........and love it. Oh, and the dimensions of the rug are 15 feet x 13 feet..........it's huge.

Hey gals...I have a bunch of enamel ware but not sure if any of it includes a bedpan. Could one of you gals post a picture so I would know if I have one and also how you displayed it....sounds so cute with flowers...hanging on a wall in the bathroom or holding extra tp! You gals have the greatest ideas!

I had to post after reading the urinal stories. I was given an enamel bedpan when I got my first apartment. My father said I was too starry eyed over the location to even ask if it had plumbing. I put a hole in it and it has hung on various bathroom walls, with flower arrangements in it, for the past 20 years.

I used to have an enamel bedpan that I used as a planter which I found at a garage sale shortly after graduationg from nursing school many years ago. It was a great conversation piece with a plant in it. I have since been collecting enamel and porcelain chamber pots which look really neat displayed in one of our bathrooms. I keep a spare roll of toilet paper in one. Memory triggers for older folks visiting and a source of inquiry for the youngsters!

Wanted to tell you about my newest acquisition at the Curbside Boutique! My son lives in Vermont and he found this gorgeous table on the side of the road. It's a tiger maple round side table and the top tilts up and it looks like maybe a candle stand there. I sent a photo to a friend of mine who has an antique store--It's worth between $700-$1000. I am so excited I can't stand it!!!

Cheryl I think that is exactly what the hoop is for! I knew you ladies would have the answer. Now I have to keep a lookout for a hurricane lamp that will fit it.
I couldn't resist the urinal. It is actually really nice enamelware. I think I will hang it in the bathroom and put dried flowers in it. Kind of a play on the whole bathroom idea.
I have since found out that my little sewing desk I bought is solid oak! It is handmade also. Beautiful dovetail drawers but only the top drawer takes a knob. It is odd. The three little drawers under it have keyholes but no way to pull it open. They are fitted pretty tight and the lock is in the middle of the drawer so I have to figure out a way to make them easier to open. It also sits really low. Perfect for a child's desk which is what it will be used for.

Katherine I had to giggle when you mentioned the urinal. I bought an enamel bedpan earlier this summer at Goodwill to use as a planter too. I had one years ago but got rid of it someplace. As a nurse we used to do that a lot back in the 70's. Was kind of a craze then. Also, your hoop thing on your candle holder..any chance that is to hold the top of a hurricane glass for over the candle to keep it from blowing out?

Oh, yeah, you definitely have the right forum to discuss your thrift sale finds!!!!! It does not matter which subject topic you choose to tell us under, we love hearing about good finds......
We eat that up here. And you sound like you had a great day! Go girl! Except maybe, the urinal....... :) If you have to get one, new in the box is definitely the best choice......teehee.
