Posted - Sep 18 2008 : 7:29:04 PM Do you remember the TV shows McMillan and Wife or Kate and Ally? Do you know who Susan St. James is? (She's an actress, married to Dick Ebersol, they lost their son in a terrible plane crash a few years ago) She just ordered ten of my feed sack purses for Christmas gifts! She wants red or green so I'm emailing her photos of what I've got and she'll pick what she wants.
First MaryJane, now Susan! (I have to confess, though, MaryJane was a bigger thrill).

Hey! I am very excited for you for more than just your deserved recognition as a textile artist. I met Susan St. James in 2006 at a book festival, as she was strolling through the booths with her sister and a friend. She is lovely in person - looks exactly as she did on that television show - but the grief of her child's death, even two years later, was no less. She was the very definition of Fragile. I'm from Colorado, and the news coverage of the crash was extensive - seeing her up close and so sad just broke my heart, and when she walked by me, I said her name and she stopped and looked right at me. Her eyes were without a speck of joy. My heart broke for her, and before I knew it, I said: If ever I saw a person who couldn't get too many hugs, it is you. And then, without thinking at all (a curse I keep trying to correct), I said: I am so sorry your child died. She didn't even hesitate. She came into my arms and let me give comfort as I could. Her coterie stood there with their mouths open, as did about everyone else. I was wearing a very cheery apron, and when she and I parted, I took it off, put it over her head and tied a big bow 'round her tiny self. She smiled, and someone took a picture of the two of us - then she was gone. Poof.
The reason I wrote this is because the fact that Susan St. James is buying your purses by the dozen for her friends as gifts - perhaps, just perhaps, she is beginning to heal and your beautiful pieces make her smile. The idea of her smiling has me just so doggone happy! And your purses - bee-u-tee-ful. Wishing you continued success, xxEllynAnne Tie One On...an apron, of course!www.apronmemories.com
THANK YOU so much for sharing this with us (typing through tears, actually). I remember when that terrible accident happened, and then I saw Susan with her husband and son on Oprah - I was blown away by her grace and courage as she told the story. It has stuck with me all this time. I am a firm believer that God puts people (and in my case, animals) in our lives sometimes "just because." Clearly that is the reason your paths crossed! What a neat story.

Posted - Sep 23 2008 : 2:54:05 PM I heard from her yesterday and now she wants 12 purses. I emailed some photos and I'm waiting to hear back. I'm so excited! Thankfully I've only got two more weeks of my regular work schedule and then I'm cutting back to three days a week, which will free up more time for sewing. I am really looking forward to that.

Posted - Sep 19 2008 : 08:03:17 AM Ginny, that is so awesome. I've been obsessed with other things lately and hadn't noticed a post from you so I was getting ready to send you an e-mail. I figured you were swamped with orders - why wouldn't you be - your purses are fantastic! I've been picked up Country Woman so that I don't miss the issue with your article. Have you done that yet or is it in the works? Anyways, last month's mag features a woman who makes purses from old cowboy boots. I thought, "Wait til they see Ginny's purses! She'll become a star!" Little did I know that you're already there. You go, girl. You make all of us farmgirls proud!!!
