Okay, what's going on, clink on the link to see what our temps are now! It's been in the high 40's the last week, all the snow is melting..... we can't ski our trails because they're better suited for ice skates!!!! Should I plant my tomatoes (you can't even really grow them in the summer)! jo

Jo,
Hubby and I watched a documentary last night on the Arctic Wildlife Refuge (not sure of the exact name, but next to Canadian border). It was just spectacular, so beautiful - and the wildlife! They also talked to a number of the people still trying to live a subsistence lifestyle there. Sounds like similar issues that we have here with native title and land rights. I was just astounded though by some senator who stood up in parliament saying that it was perfectly fine to drill for oil in this region. His reasoning being - he held up a white sheet of cardboard saying that is all that is there!
I don't know if you live near this region, but looking at all the wildlife photos you post, Alaska is the one place I am absolutely desparate to visit! And hubby agrees!

Hey dorothy, me too!! I'm starting basil, and more lupine for my yard. I start ten lupine every year, so it's beginning to look amazing for August now........ I brought my roses in from the garage and they're going crazy. It has been unbelievable in Anchorage, Intensely sunny, I had an allergic reaction to the sunlight last weekend and had to take benadryl, too weird. Grow lights have really made a difference for me, but we have an enormous south wall of windows that really send everything off. It won't be too long before the melt off but so cold. We're still way below zero here..... jo

It is frigid here and has been for a week.The wind is howling,the temp. is 6 degrees with that unforgettful wind chill factor included.Yesterday I had cabin fever so I went out and trimmed branches and made more room for the manure pile! Hubby thought I was nuts working in that temp.The wind wasn't strong there and I was dressed warm. Today though I'll spend indoors in the grow room around all my little plant starts.Those grow lights really make the mood better! |

They have their own web site, we wanted to look at them so we stopped in in Portland at their store while Paul was at a conference. It's wireless, there is all this "smart" technology out there now so you can even water your garden based on your station, it's crazy.... it measures waterfall and will turn on, too weird. We watch the barometric pressures alot and temperatures because of such long nights and days. We're building cold frames and when the days are so long it can get very warm under glass. Our house is designed to obtain the maximum amount of solar energy in the summer. I'll show some pics when it's up and running!

Hey - cool that you have your own station! I would love something like that - especially as I get more and more "into" weather and how it affects the farm here. I'll have to check out Oregon Scientific -- they've got to be on the Web, right? Anyway - let me know how it works for you and Mr. Science Guy!

Hello Libbie! We bought our very own little weather station this weekend down in Oregon, it's from Oregon Scientific, it has all these little sensors to stick everywhere, even a wind measurement device! It was Paul's birthday present, we need to get the software to link it to our computers so we can monitor highs and lows. One of the benefits of being married to Mr science guy! It's 27 today and almost 9 hours of daylight, only 3 more months until spring!!! jo

I would love to have a weather station like that at our farm! It's been very spring-like here over the last few days (barring, of course, the little bit of snow night before last!). It's a blue-gray sky day here, with the temp. still warm enough to create mud, mud, mud everywhere I look and everywhere my little boy steps.
