Wow last night right after dark I took my Baxter out for a walk and I could hear a whippo-will singing. We usually do not hear these until April. Baxter was so excited he did not know what to make of it. LOL Crazy weather has all the birds confused.

We do have the red headed wood peckers here in central Florida. I think they are so pretty.

Just got back from Texas and we heard them. Actually woke up to them on the ranch. My daughter was thrilled - never heard one before.

I grew up on Long Island and the rest of my extended family lived in Florida. That was such a special sound to me because it meant I was waking up in my Grandmother's house and she was going to make me sweet tea, homemade egg noodles, and peach cobbler. Opening my eyes, I could see the curly spanish moss dripping off the tree's and later, I would have to ask my mother "what is this stuff called again?" The extra humidity seemed to wrap my skin like a cool blanket and when I breathed in deep I could smell the grass, flowers, and coffee brewing in the kitchen. It smelled like home. There are few sounds, sights, smells, or tastes that run my memory like the sound of a whippo-will. No matter how old I get, whenever I hear one, it always takes me back to being a young girl visiting her very loved and special Grandmother. :)

We have the red-headed woodpecker in Louisiana. We have a camp out in the Atchafalya Swamp, and I've seen them there. They love the trees in the swamp. In fact, they wake me up peeking!!!!!!

My cousin, who is a bird lover like me, told me that the old timey birds actually sang "Whippoor-Will" and that the more recent editions sing "Whippo-Will" (minus the "r"). I haven't done an internet search, but will. Perhaps it is a regional thing or maybe there are different varieties. Interesting.
This is a bit off the topic, but, here in North Carolina, it is also very rare to see a true red-headed woodpecker. We have the red-bellied woodpeckers (they have a rust-colored head with a tiny bit of rust on their bellies and black and white speckled wings) and the downy woodpecker, but I have yet to see a red-headed one. They are so distinct, with bright, dark red heads, white bellies and solid black wings. Would be interested to know if any of you have the red-heads in your state. They are on the endangered list in several states.

I had to google whippo-wills because I had never heard of them. It's so amazing how things vary in the different parts of the states!

I love going to the Texas Hill Country, I have a sister that lives out there. I always hear whippo-wills. I have never heard them here in SW Louisiana.

You are so fortunate to have whippor-wills. Here in North Carolina, I never hear them. When I was a kid, we had one that used to drive me crazy at night. It would sit on the roof and call out all night long. I tried going outside and running it off, but it would come right back. How I long to hear one now! Another bird I never hear is the bobwhite. I think hunters have made both species extinct or at least endangered in my region.
