Checking in, we had an 5.3 Earthquake at 11:46 pm last night on our Colorado/New Mexico Border.
Hoping our Colorado girls in the area are alright.
I live in the middle of the state and felt nothing.
Worse earthquake in Colorado for 70 years, some homes damaged but have not heard of any deaths, thank God.
Just found out about the Virginia Earthquake, they closed JFK!
Check in Colorado and Virginia Farmgirls please so we know you are safe.

Debbie

Denise,

We have a stream that runs behind our house - thankfully we have about 10-15 yards of land between the fence & stream before it reaches our property, neighbors have less because it curves. We've already lost one large oak into the stream that's changed it's path with the spring rains (slid in from the bank). Our house is on a hill compared to others on our block, but I don't know how much that matters when they're calling for a foot of rain plus the wind with saturated ground. I just wish it was a daytime storm because I hate when they hit overnight.

Today I have a 6yo who had diarrhea and a 3yo with too much energy. I'm going outside to put all of the playthings in the shed and any pots up close to the house - those I can move. I will have my husband take in the umbrella tonight as I cannot lift it. Then I have a bushel of peaches to process and a bushel of tomatoes to roast & process and a turkey to defrost so I can cook that tomorrow... I thought I'd have my MIL up here today to help, but my FIL didn't want her to come because of getting ready for the storm themselves so I'm going at my crazy long list alone.

I have a friend who relocated up here from New Orleans after Katrina and she's considering visiting her ils in NO to avoid Irene. How's that for irony!

Prayers would be greatly appreciated - this is a big storm and there are a lot of people on the Atlantic Coast who haven't seen a hurricane (or tropical storm) this big in a long time, if ever.

The VA quake was felt here in S. central NJ. I happened to be driving at the time so I didn't feel it. My dh was at home and things were moving. He said the house started creaking so I am glad I wasn't here to hear it! I didn't know he was home and when we found out ( someone ask us if we felt it) I was worried about my dog being home alone. Thankfully she wasn't. She does like thunderstorms so I wasn't sure what she would do.

Now concerned about Irene too Nicole. With all the rain we have had these past weeks I am concerned about some of our bigger trees coming down and flooding. We are up on a hill but because of the way the house is situated we get flooding in the back of the house and the basement.
batten down the hatches and take care!

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

We were at the shore when the quake hit on Tuesday. We didn't realize until about 15 seconds in what it was because we thought kids were pushing & pulling our chairs and then we saw the water rocking in the buckets and we realized what it was. A check on the iPhone assured there wouldn't be a tsunami - my 6 year old's fear (my husband had been in Japan on business 3 weeks before the big quake & tsunami). But out here in the East, we don't have buildings built to withstand earthquakes because they're so infrequent (for the "larger ones" like the 5.8 we had Tuesday). There are several buildings that were affected in our area (NJ, several hundred miles from the epicenter) because of the different structural codes. Now we're dealing with hurricane Irene and we've had major flooding in the past couple of weeks. This is just a huge mess.

EARTHQUAKES... altho very small ones, are going on all the time in the US. Only the larger ones make headlines.

I hear that the government is stockpiling food and emergency supplies for the potential of an earthquake on the "New Madrid" fault. This fault runs about 150 miles from Cairo/Chicago, Ill to Memphis, TN with the major fault line near southern Illinois, eastern Missouri and Arkansas, and western Tennessee.

It was responsible for 4 of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in North America. They occured between Dec 1811 to Feb 1812 - and changed the course of the Mississippi river near Memphis.

That said, you can always check the USGA.gov site for earthquake activity around the US. They monitor it 24-7.

Whose to say. In Texas we have tornadoes, hurricanes, deadly droughts, minor quakes and the local paper just reported that 2 MOUNTAIN LIONS have now moved into the neighborhood. Go figure. We are FLATLANDERS!! They are looking for water and food sources because of our drought. Who knows were they started out from.

The earth is absolutely beautiful -- but also fraught with a few dangers that we have to just deal with. So, as my old Girl Scout training taught.. Be Prepared. And, as Mom used to teach... Forewarned is Forarmed. Stay Safe Sisters.. where ever you live.

We didn't feel anything over here on the western slope in Colorado, but have friends in Boston, Virginia, and DC, where everyone got quite a scare. The spires fell off the national cathedral in DC, and a lot of houses damaged, but no deaths. The last time there was an earthquake in this area was in 1986, and I had just moved from the Bay area/San Francisco to escape the items flying off the walls!

Yes, we have but usually only in the area where yesterday's hit. But, I did hear on the news that it was felt in Colorado Springs which is only 45 minutes from us.
Yesterday's was in the south close to the border, it was the worse one since 1970.

Glad that you are safe. I felt the one here in Virginia today, and hope it is my last earthquake I experience.
