Now, I haven't had a chance to research this. Maybe I'll find some time to do so today.
Last weekend, my oldest daughter & I were talking to the pumpkin farmer at our farmers market. Talking about the upcoming winter. He told us in his estimation it's going to be a bitterly cold winter. He said his Dad was alive in the early 1900's and there was a volcano that erupted for so many days - the following winter was one of the coldests on record. The year that Mt. St. Helens erupted we had another record breaking (or really cold) winter.
He mentioned that Mt. St. Helens blew ash for something like 9 hours - then earlier this year there was another volcano that blew for days on end???? Hence the reason for his prediction of a cold winter.
We talked about other signs of cold coming. I'm filing my suet feeder every day. Birds are visiting that normally don't feed from suet. Are they fattening up? He reported squirrel tails being especially bushy - to keep them warm. Nut trees didn't produce many nuts? We did notice that camping this fall there weren't as many nuts to collect. The ones that did fall were very small. He says it's because the trees are saving their energy in the roots for the winter???
I just wonder if anyone else has heard of the volcano/weather thing. I do know that nature gives us signs of things to come. Anyone seeing other signs?
Mr. Pumpkin Farmer told us to buy our long underwear early! Beat the rush!

Here in my part of California it has been a very cool October, usually we don't consider winter weather until Halloween. It's been quite cool and we've even had rain once. And we do have tons of acorns in the trees in which the squirrels are driving the cats bonkers with their harvesting. The long range weather here says El Nino is back and we are supposed to have a warm but, very wet winter. We'll have to wait & see, I do hope for lots of rain cold or not. California has had such bad droughts we NEED the water.

Just from what I'm observing here, southwest of Chicago, I think we are in for a cold winter too. The leaves changed & fell off the trees a few weeks earlier then normal. The ducks seemed to have disappeared and we don't have as many Canadian geese around either. The squirrels do have very bushy tails, the chipmunks seem to have vanished already too. These past two winters were very cold and we had tons of snow, so we have gotten used to it.

I think it is going to be cold this winter too. My horse started shedding her winter coat in mid August- about six weeks early. But then it stayed hot instead of gradually falling to colder weather. Then we had a cold snap than none of the horses were prepared for. Now she is finally starting to get a good winter coat on her and I don't think it is going to get very warm again. We might have a few nice days but I think we are in for the long haul now.

Our trees have lots of acorns and I was told that is a sign of a cold winter coming. Also, the bees have built their nests in the ground and that also indicates a cold winter. We'll wait and see.
