WOW!!! I live on the east side of the state, right on the Canadian border,This has turned out to be quite the winter, first, nothing, balmy and cool, but, no cold, and now 35 below with the wind chill, our temp is 5 * but, the wind(35 to 40 mph), the old timers here say it is called a "lazy" wind, too lazy to go around you, so it goes right through you!!!!

According to my calendar today is Winter's Solstice so at least we will be getting little longer days and we are on our way to spring (even if it doesn't look like it at all when I look out my window. JoAnn

I'm sorry to say we have the same weather here in the Chicago area. It is -30 with the windchill. The view out the windows are quite beautiful though, lots of snow and ice. Hard to believe that today is the official first day of winter! We've had winter weather for a month now.

-3 degrees right now -- and 20 mph wind -- to give us somewhere around 35 below zero wind chill. It is d..ned cold! A day of baking for me -- lemon blueberry mini loafs, chicken pot pie -- and also sewing up some potholders for gifts. We're watching 'Cars' and sitting by the woodstove while we eat the pot pie. Yum, cozy, happy.

No more snow for now. The freezing rain has started. Woke up to about a 1/4" of ice on the snow, trees and cars but calm, very little wind. Now it is picking up and I can hear the little frozen drops hit the window. If you don't have to travel in it, it is sure pretty. Glad I filled the bird feeders, the little feather friends are eating away.

I added a couple of pictures from the backyard. You can see how deep my steps are by our composter

Good morning ladies,
I live in SW Washington, It has been snowing here for almost a week, more on than off. Last night the wind really started in. We have over a foot of snow here. Most winters it snows & melts right away, not this year. All our critters are snug & safe. This morning when I let the dog out, there is 1/4" ice now on top of the snow. Felt sorry for her. Gave her 15 mins & brought her back in. It is 24, wind is still blowing, but not snowing for now.

Jamie I grew up in E-burg & know the wind well. All those cold windy White Christmas memories. Loved it as a kid. My Mom & brothers live there still. Brrrrr is right.

We got hit again last night--more snow and high winds. But on the positive side--our power stayed on and we're not frozen in our beds. MB

asnedecor Posted - Dec 20 2008 : 6:05:42 PM
21 with a wind chill of 5. We have about 4" to 5" on the ground and blowing like you know what. Very windy - east winds coming down the gorge. Suppose to stop snowing sometime late tonight and then freezing rain into tomorrow on top of all this snow. Not suppose to really warm up until late Sunday into Monday. Oh what fun! Oh and most of the airport is shut down too!

It's 30 degrees here in Northern Illinois--the warmest day of the next several according to weather forecasts. We'll definitely have a white Christmas. A hard ice/snow mix covers the ground and it's not going to leave anytime soon. Temps are expected to drop to -2 below zero tomorrow with a high of 8. A friend who lives 15 miles south of my home had her power go out for a day (yesterday) due to ice on the lines, and I was so worried she'd freeze to death. I offered to have her come and stay at my house, but she kept thinking her power would come on sooner than later and wanted to wait it out there at home. Thankfully, her power came back on around 5am today.

After living in the country for many years, with power outages happening often, I learned to always be prepared for almost any emergency. There's plenty of candles, matches, or a lighter handy, a first-aid kit, a battery-operated weather radio, working flashlights, and extra water & food--just in case I wasn't able to make it in to town for a while. I was surprised to find that my friend had no working flashlight or radio, no flashlight, etc. Needless to say, although I had already bought her Christmas gift, I'm changing plans and buying her an emergency kit instead.

Stay safe, friends, and keep warm.

Those coats are great investments!

I think Embarass also holds the record for lowest temp ever in the state of Minnesota.
Or maybe that was "Frostbite" Falls. (Remember Rocky and Bulwinkle?)

A long day. We had between 18 and 24 inches of snow overnight plus it snowed all day. I shoveled snow for 6 1/2 hours today. Big gates are a real drag when it snows. The guy who plows snow for me finally showed up at 4:45 and plowed me out in the dark. Record snowfalls are not fun. Granted the snow is pretty to look at but awful to move. After a record snow year last year I really hoped we'd get a more moderate and normal snow season this year. Hopefully this won't be indicative of the way the rest of the season is going to go. I hope all is well with everyone else- lots of us in the same boat. At least it was warmer - all of 14 above but they say we'll be back sub-zero by Saturday.

Well I tried to go to work, it was a NoGo, cant get off my road in my little car. Ugh I need to get some snow tires or chains, this is crazy!! No signs of it letting up either. If they would just plow it might be okay, but no they sit on the side of the road waiting for the Okay.Just insane...

We have freezing rain this morning - on top of snow we got during the night, which is on top of ice we have had for a couple of days. I'm not planning on going out at all today!

Jami, according to my daughter who lives in Marysville and drives through Everett to get to her work--there wasn't much snow in Everett. so rest easy about your daughter. We have about 10 inches of the new stuff. My son in law brought up the boys in his 4X and said the roads up here are bad and of course he was having fun squirreling around in it. So I am homebound for a few more days. MB

Heat wave this morning - all of 8 above - sure beats -8 below. It's snowing but it's the pretty kind - champagne powder. I still have to slog around in it but from inside it's really beautiful. Hopefully the eggs won't be frozen this morning! Back to my candy making. The holidays are sneaking up fast. Have a safe and warm day.

I saw your snow on the news this morning, MaryBeth. My daughter lives in Everett and I worry about her because she's got an old car that isn't so reliable and I'm sure she has bald tires. She moved to the west side to get citified and not have to deal with our winters here...so much for that idea.

We got snow overnight but seem to be the warm spot on the east side of the mountains at 11 degrees.

Been feeding extra to the stock but fortunately we have plenty of hay and lots of stock water heaters. I am thankful for electricity today!

Well we got a ton of snow overnight and schools are closed and I am snowed in again. I did manage to dig my car out and thaw it yesterday and get out and go to the store. At least it is not so bitter cold---still cold but high 20s instead of teens and below. so here I am again. MB

Last night it was -14 here in Delano, when I drove by the thermometer at school, and the windchill was -30+.
It was worse up North of here on the Iron Range.
I love that lazy wind saying-it is so true!!!
Today it snowed an inch-just enough to make it messy on the already icy roads.
Yay-I love the winter. Okay, I am just kidding.
Tomorrow it will be a balmy 10 degrees. Is it sad that I am looking forward to that? LOL

I will just keep wearing my trusty sleeping bag coat. (that is what my daughter calls it) It is a down Eddie Bauer coat that is so long it hits my ankles. Just perfect for this weather.

Stay warm, ladies. At least it looks like you'll get a White Christmas.
