Last night we got a major pounding of snow, it was the remnants of that big storm that caused all those tornadoes a couple of days ago. It started about 4 p.m. and was very high winds, snowing sideways from the east! I had to drive home from work in it around 8:30 last night, and there were no plows anywhere, you couldn't tell what part of the road you were on, and whiteouts with zero visibility! It was sure a white-knuckle drive.

Well, it snowed all night like that, and finally quit this morning around 10:30. Of course the school buses were cancelled (snow day #7 so far), and the drift in front of my son's truck was up to his headlights. They say we got 40 cm on the level (that's 16 inches). It took us a good 4 hours of slugging to get the driveway cleared out, with 2 people shovelling.

Even the local hospital had to declare a code white, because the staff couldn't get in to work, and they had to keep the staff there that were already working.

Guess what, they're calling for snow on Saturday...

Spring, where are you?

I am finding people are getting so grouchy and cranky over the snow. This morning I went to my eye doctor's to stop in for 5 minutes to pick up contacts for my daughter. He's in a small strip mall with a few other businesses. I drove in, and the parking lot is heaped up with snow everywhere, reducing it by a few parking spaces. I could only see one spot left, at the beginning of the lot in front of a wine-making shop. I drove out, circled around and drove back in again, and pulled into the empty spot. The owner came out, and went on a rant about how the doctors take up all the spaces, and chased me out of there!!! Well, if I ever thought about making wine there, I am certainly not going to now! I even told him I would only be 5 minutes, and there was no sign up that said the space was for his store only. So, I nicely wished him a Happy Valentine's Day, and I left, parked a few blocks away, and walked.

Honestly, we're all in this together, so we might as well learn to cope!

Yes, we're in for another storm tonight.

Monday I was planting peas wearing capris and a tank top. Tuesday we were at the San Diego Zoo in shorts and tank tops. Today the snow is falling and we've canceled our plans to go down the hill to a Valentine's party. I keep tellng myself "It's still winter"!!! That's OK, we need the percipitation in any form.

A couple of weeks ago after a big storm I got my car totally mired. I shoveled and shoveled and put things under the tires, hoping for traction, but I gave up. The roof was leaking in the bathroom upstairs because the gutters were frozen. The next day I put a load of laundry just as a friend stopped by. He has a big truck, so he thought maybe he could pull me out. We attached some chains and started trying to move my car. After about twenty minutes I came inside to put my laundry in the drier, opened the door to my tiny laundry room and was greeted with a wave of water. A geyser was shooting out of the back of my machine. I turned it off. My friend figured out it was probably a frozen drain, which was what had happened. We worked on the car for another half hour and only succeeded in getting it even more mired. I finally called a tow truck. I am definitely tired of the snow.
Then when it rains and all the heaps are gone, I want more snow just because the expanse of brown is so depressing, but I truly am tired of the excessive amounts we are getting. We have a saying in Maine that there are two seasons here - winter and the 4th of July. I can remember one fourth of July when my kids were little and it was raining all day, the temperature had a high of 43 degrees that day. And our water heater blew up. I must have some weird connection with bad weather and machines going haywire. Ah well, it's only winter.

We had such a warm spell before this latest cold snap in WNY, I'm actually finding the arctic temps kind of exciting....

Feel free to pelt me with snowballs for that!

I love the snow, but mother nature is a tease! On tuesday we had all that rain, and everything was melting and it was warming up - and i was getting kinda hopeful about spring, and then as Lori said, we get a great whack of snow/freezing rain. At least I don't have to go anywhere in the next couple days though, :)

Can I ever feel it today, from yesterday's shovelling workout! But, at least we haven't been dealing with avalanches like some of you girls out west.

Oh well, we can't do much about Mother Nature, but we can complain about it together. It does make us appreciate the good weather more, when it finally arrives.

I think I'll settle in this weekend and crochet some dishcloths!

Hey Lori in northern B.c. we got 5 feet of it I just hope it is a slow melt down when spring hits cause I do not want a swamp either. The day is starting to get longer so it is almost over. It has been wacky winter everywhere by the looks of it. I will swap out in the sewing room and make it seem shorter.

I know we are certainly going to be staggered rows of trees on both sides of our property, but first we will have to get a second well going to accommodate all the extra watering...but if we can get a handle on some of the winds, did I mention it is windy here in mid-to late summer?, then we might be able to enjoy being out side....but it will take quit a few trees and several years to reap the benifitts. oh well, we have the time...We too are on flat(wheat farm lands & treeless)land....

Thank you Grace for the offer but you can keep the wind there: ) Being surrounded by trees helps loads. The people across the road from us "thinned" some of the trees from there property. Darn near a clear cut we thought. During the next big summer storm we had a bunch more fell over because they had thinned so heavilly. Moral plant trees!! I actually hear that in southern Mn which is pretty flat and treeless they were thinking of planting trees along the roads as windbreaks to keep the snow from drifting.
katmom Posted - Feb 07 2008 : 7:23:48 PM
hey JoAnn, can I send some wind your way???? we are sooooo tired of it here in Spokane especially on the Western Plains..... and yes we have some huge drifts across the road, some of ours are over 5' high....in fact just up the highway where the Airforce Base is, they couln't get through earlier. The road was closed due to the drifts. But wahooo it was nice & sunny...lol!
Hopefully tomorrow the winds will die down......

Raising my hand here. Today was glorious though. Sunny practically balmy (low 40's) I was watching the news and some how horrid it was with the wind and drifting by Spokane area sisters. I couldn't believe it. The melt has begun. JoAnn

I agree, the snow was pretty but enough is enough! After reading what Lori's got up there in Frostbite Falls, I really can't complain too loudly though. I am thinking spring like crazy. I plan to take my Valentine's decorations next Friday morning and put up my Easter ones! I'm hoping Mother Nature gets the hint!

I think I would love it if I didn't have to go out in it ever and if the wind wasn't blowing. At this point I too am really read to bury my fingers and toes into some sun-warmed soil and smell that rich earth smell!
