I just picked up MJ's new book at Borders yesterday...sounds like a familiar theme here...LOL! My hubby and I have an 80 acre farm in NE Oklahoma where we raise Brahman cattle and mini donkeys, keep bees, have started a vineyard, and harvest hay. I also have a quarter horse, 2 labs, a house cat, several barn cats, and only 3 guinea fowl. This is a second marriage for both of us and my first time to live on a farm....I've found it's lots of work, but I love it! Looking forward to making new friends.  |

I have lived in many towns in Kansas, but spent most of my life in either Garnett or Iola. I have been to Salina often. My daughter and her family live in Augusta.
My husband set up an irrigation system for our vineyard, which has come in handy as this was a dry spring. The climate tends to be more humid here than yours, so we have to also spray a sulfur solution to avoid black mold.
We don't raise wheat here, in fact there are very few crops raised in this area....we cut hay instead, grow lots of bermuda! Nancy |

Nancy~
Welcome aboard, I'm new too and fell in love with the book also! I have donkeys also -- just had a new baby boy a week ago. My Jenny is a mix between a miniture and a standard and the Jack is a standard. She has thrown black, white, brown, and red babies all with the cross. I love them and would have no other door bell in my life! My family farm also has guineas, cats, and horses (one quarter and one percheron). I hope you enjoy the chatting!

I'm in NE Oklahoma, too! Where are you? I just returned from the Wednesday Cherry Street Market at the Garden Center in Tulsa. Picked up some blackberries (gosh, were they expensive!), peaches, and green beans. Traded some of the blackberries (most of them; the kids don't like them) with my mom for some blueberries.
Off to get dinner ready for humans and dogs ...

Nancy, I live near Salina. Where do you hail from in Kansas? I also have Catawba planted, and Golden Muscat, Vinoles and Traminette and some Concords. That is great you have some wineries nearby to sell to. Keep me posted on your vineyard progress. Do you have any special problems in OK growing grapes? Here it seems to be drought and high hot winds. I have to irrigate. It has been much wetter this summer so I have not had to yet. When I figure this digital camera and posting pics I will post pics of my vineyard. Is wheat harvest done for you? We finished yesterday. Just in time too! A rainstorm let loose just after we took the wheat to the elevator. Do you raise any other crops? I just have 20 acres but we squeeze everything we can out of this parcel of earth! We raise Dexter cattle. I have a big veggie garden, flowers, herbs, 3 cats, and a very protective Lab who thinks he is a German Shepard. he is a sweetheart though, his name is Max. I'd love to get some chickens, but DH is hesitant. Think I will do it anyway, and build my own chicken tractor for them. After all, we are can-do farmgirls! Great chattin' with ya Nancy!

Thanks for the welcome, Jenny! I'm actually a Kansas girl too, or at least I was until 3 years ago. What town are you close to? We planted about 2 acres of grapes last year....Catawba and Niagra. There are several small wineries in the area that want to buy them, and after we've sold several crops, my hubby hopes to have the funds to buy his own winemaking equipment. Of course that will mean one of us (me, me, please make it me) will have to quit our full time job and stay home to manage the farm....LOL! Nancy |
