Posted - Mar 06 2007 : 10:12:37 AM Becoming a part of the Farmgirls is one of the most exciting things to happen to the women of our small mountain town. Several of us have wanted to form a women’s club For a few years now but were looking for something unique and inspiring to get us going.
I had read an article in the Idaho Statesman about Mary Jane some time ago. She was such an inspiring role model that I cut the article out and pinned it to my bulletin board. Much later I removed the article and filed it away for future reference. A couple of months ago I joined a new book club and one of the offerings was Mary Janes Lifestyle book which I promptly ordered.
When my book arrived I could not put it down. It was so much more than I could have imagined. This book spoke directly to my heart and I immediately shared the book with all the women in my life. I next found some of the back issues of the magazine and purchased them, falling immediately in love with every single word. The power in these magazines is “huge” and they have been shared with my co-workers who are also my friends. I am now going to be purchasing the book for all the women in my life, for birthday gifts and Christmas gifts and just because.
I began going online for more, as I have now found myself insatiable for everything I can learn. Imagine my delight when I found the link to start our own chapter here in Idaho City. Since we are in the mountains we decided to call ourselves “Mountain Farmgirls” and are anxiously awaiting our packet to make us official. We are already planning a float for our fourth of July parade which will include a flatbed trailer pulled by a tractor.
Maryjanes definition of “rural” is less than 40 stoplights. We do not have a single one. Our town is an incredibly historic mining town that is called the “Ghost Town That Refused to Die” but we have been dying. We are hoping through our farmgirls chapter that we can breath some much needed life into our little town of 400+ people. Future projects include a farmers market, a web site for our homemade goodies, and finding a permanent home for our chapter, which is a more long term goal for us.
Thanks so much for bringing life back to us and hopefully our small town.
Sincerely,
Rose A. Washam

Posted - Jun 04 2007 : 12:10:03 PM Welcome, Rose!!! And also to all in your chapter. Sounds like you're really going to town with all the projects on tap for the summer. WAY TO GO LADIES!!!
I also had the same experience - bought one magazine and I was hooked. Then purchased the books and the past issues and shared them with my friends and they really got into it too. One friend has all my MJF stuff and can't wait until she orders her own issues and books so I can have mine back. I miss not having them. We've too talked about starting a chapter in our little town.
Will be looking forward to visiting your website when you get it up and running.
You'll love it here - so much to learn and share. I know I've learned a lot from just reading the different forums and chatting with everyone. It's indeed an education.
Hope to hear more about your chapter and the revival of your town.
Peace and love.

Posted - Jun 04 2007 : 08:12:32 AM Hi all, updates on our Chapter. Lisa Marie and I got to meet Mary Jane and Carol at the Past Blessings Antique show in May, and what a joy that was. They are both beautiful, gracious and lovely women and we were honored to get a visit with them. Our chapter has been taking off big time. We were given a 75' x 45' garden site and are working on fencing it off from the deer so that has been a big project. We have been meeting weekly and working on flowers for our float for the 4th of July parade. We have huge piles of tissue paper flowers and some are works of art! We are all working on our "pin keepers" and what imagination our members all have, wow! Our clubhouse is wonderful, I mistakenly called it the "Farmhouse" so that is what we are calling it now. It is great to have a place farmgirls can come and go to work on their projects or just get a break from everything or everyone.
Our website is still "Under Construction" but we do have our link to Mary Janes homesite. Our webmaster is still working on it but you can check it out at www.mountainfarmgirls.com and see what we are about. We will soon have our products listed. Our first "Farmgirls Market" is June 16th and our local Arts Council is doing our summer music program the same days at the same place so we are very excited. They are also promoting us with their ads. The street will be closed off during our hours and one of the local businesses has offered to let us use their restrooms and a place to put our purses if we want to. The clock is ticking!!
This weekend is a Smokejumpers reunion and at least 4 of us Farmgirls are each opening one of the historic buildings in town and conducting tours for the smokejumpers.
We just keep growing! One of the members had a plant exchange at her house and what fun that was. Some of the women who came to it are interested in joining us at our next meeting!
It seems we are on a roll and we just can't be stopped. You will find "Mountain Farmgirls" in all positions in our town, City Council, School Board, Historic Foundation, Historic Preservation Commission, Scholarship Board and as local government employees!

I will take lots of pictures and send them on for the newsletters...keep watching us, we are making a name for ourselves and the whole MaryJanes' concept...What a great thing to be happening to us! Posted - Mar 29 2007 : 11:28:06 AM Update for our "Mountain Farmgirl" chapter. We will be having our first chapter meeting this Sunday, April 1st and are so excited to start going. I will let everyone know what we come up with but you can expect great ideas, great food and most importantly great women. I have read all 18 Chapter leaders newsletters and printed them out for everyone to have the chance to read them. I think our first major event we will begin in May is our Farmers Market which wil also have crafts from local Artisans. I will post more after the meeting. Blessings to all! Rose

Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 07:20:18 AM Sweet Rose! I'm contemplating at least a couple of trips when my next book launches. Well, actually later in the summer. (I'll be up to my neck filming a TV series when my book comes out May 1.) I've always wanted to come to Idaho City. Got room for me and my entourage? We'd love to attend one of your chapter meetings! |

Posted - Mar 06 2007 : 12:10:22 PM Thank you Tina Michelle for you support. I am already on City Council, this is my fourth year, and I am in my second term as School board treasurer. I am also on a scholarship committee and a grant writing committee. I am fully prepared to bring anything we come up with before city council and hope to generate the enthusiasm that we are feeling within our small community. I just feel like I am on fire and MaryJane was my match that started the fire! We just can't quit talking about all of our future plans!

Posted - Mar 06 2007 : 11:51:33 AM welcome to the group Rose! I wish you the absolute best in getting your town more involved in the reviving...perhaps you and the women you are involved with can attend some town council meetings or even hold meetings with business owners in your town and have "brainstorming sessions"..talk about ways to market your town and to get the word out there more to folks. Find ways to draw folks into the town to visit and to shop. It is an undertaking..but if folks work together..it can be done. Best of wishes to you all. Also best of wishes in getting a farmgirl chapter up and going! You go girl!!!
