Hi! My name is Mary. I read MaryJane's Farm book last month and just loved it! Totally my style, although I don't practice everything my heart longs for at this time. I'm still working on getting back to basics, one thing at a time.

I've been married for 6 years (next month) and we have 2 children: 4 year-old boy and 2 year-old girl. We live in North Pole, Alaska.

Thanks for letting me join your group! I've been reading posts all weekend and I've already tried some of the ideas. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Mary,
That's great! How long is your growing season up there? When and if you move where are you hoping to move to? Right now my husbands job has us in Japan but I hope to move back stateside this year and settle either in New England somewhere or MO. I want chickens and possibly goats too. what breeds were you looking into? The only one in the house who wants a pig is my 6 yr old daughter who thinks they are so cute.... she has wanted one since she was two and I have NO idea why ... Anyway, she may get her pig, if we get our place with enough room. I am hoping for a min of 15 acres so who knows... I loved reading your thoughts and plans and can't wait to hear more!! Do you have a green house to help extend your growing season?
Look forward to chating more!
Hugz!

Well...let's see. We only have an acre right now, but we're hoping to purchase more land and build a house this fall maybe. I've done a little bit of gardening the last three years or so, but nothing like I dream of doing. I've always stuck to vegetables in the past because it felt frivolous to spend money on flowers at the time. Now that we're getting a little more financial cushion these days, I will probably plant flowers in addition to vegetables this year. However, I don't want to go crazy and make a fabulous garden if we're going to sell- then I'd feel like I did all that work for nothing. I still have a couple months to think about it though- we don't plant until the end of May. It's been -40 degrees this week. It's hard to think about summer.

I've done a bit of canning. I don't do a lot of crafting because when I do, I get really selfish until I finish a project and I think my children deserve better than that. Every few months I try sewing something. I'm not very good at it yet, but I feel like such a woman when I actually try!

My husband wants to get 2 pigs this summer. I'd rather get chickens or a goat, but he's insisting on pigs. He's dreaming of pork chops and bacon. Maybe when we get more land I will get chickens and a goat. I'd like to get a milk goat. Actually, I'd really like to get a goat share so I can have the milk, but I haven't found anywhere around here to do that.

I would love, love, love to have fruit trees, but our soil is poor and cold. Maybe at the next property...

This will be the first year that both of my children are old enough to have the patience to wander around while I putter in the yard. I'm really looking forward to it!

Thank you, ladies, for all of your kind welcomes! I'm always surprised by all the people who want to travel to Alaska. As a kid, I thought they were all crazy, but now that I've been outside, I can see why it's such a mystery to everyone. It really is different here. I get lost in the crowds of other places. I like to be near a city, but still able to get somewhere to be alone.

Hi, Pamela! I was in MOPS last year. I didn't join this year because my husband has been working out of town and we've been traveling. I might join next fall, though. Do you know which group your daughter leads? I think there are three groups locally. I was involved in the one at Friends Church.

Hi Mary,

My daughter lives in Fairbanks...which is close to North Pole, right? They ahve been there for just over four months now. She has six children. She has just taken over the local MOPS group. She is a great leader and is very excited about the fun and interesting things the group is going to do over the next few years. Are you familiar with MOPS? It is Mother's of Pre-Schoolers. They get together and have fun meetings and give each other support.
If do not know about it or are interested email me and I will put you in touch with her.
We hope to get to your neck of the woods before too long...probably this summer. It sounds beautiful.
Pamela

Welcome Mary!!! How neat to live in Alaska! We have a couple other farmgirls here from Alaska too. I would love to visit there someday. I don't like to travel much but there are a couple places I would sure love to see (also Vermont, Canada and the deep south)
It will be fun to get to know you here. We are all just doing all we can..I don't think there are many of us (for sure not me) who can do all we wish we could..but every little bit helps.
Anyway..welcome to the group!!
