Another Wisconsinite checking in!
My name is Ricki and I'm wayyyyy up north in Wisconsin, just a stone's throw from Lake Superior. We moved here from Minnesota, where I grew up, just about two years ago.
I have two daughters (two and fourteen!), and have been married to a great guy for 7 yrs. We have a few acres here, a dog, a cat, and 18 chickens (including the 3 that hatched out about 2 weeks ago!).
I am a stay-at-home-Mom but I have a little studio that I get to paint and sew in, some day I hope to be better at both! I make primitive dolls that I sell in a couple of shops.
This year my goal is to grow something that the chickens don't destroy in my little garden (fence going in this spring, I hope!). I'm working on converting to all organic foods in the house but it's expensive ~ so growing and canning/freezing some would sure be nice!
I can't wait to get started with all the learning and chatting on this site ~ I bought Mary Jane's book for myself as a Christmas present and fell in love with it!

How exciting to go completely organic - there are ways around the expense. Joining a co-op is a start, also find others around you who grow or raise animals and se what you can do to barter or purchase at a lower cost. I have found that the more creative you think the more people support you in your dreams. Good luck on the chicken thing. Your going to find this site so wonderful and helpful. Welcome

Hi Ricki. And welcome! I bought Mary Jane's book last year for myself and a girlfriend and it's a hard book to put down once you start. :)

Welcome Ricki!!! How smart you are to go organic. I do my best..but am still working on it for sure. I think growing your own or finding a way to produce it is the best way to get there...I want to make a cold frame and get it going this year too. Our growing season is a little longer than yours but not much..we have early frost every year it seems. I am dying to get started with my tomato and pepper plants inside..sure is hard to wait!!
You will love this group..just jump right in to the conversations! I am glad you found us!

Thanks everyone! Yes, Katie, I am zone 3. I have zone envy big time! LOL ~ it's a short season. I'm hoping to make a cold frame this year too so that I can grow some greens and such later into the year.

Hello up there! I'm down here by Lake Michigan by Chicago. I love your area -- Lake Superior is so beautiful; an entirely different personality than Lake Michigan.
Good for you on the decision to go organic -- it is more expensive, isn't it? And homegrown always tastes (and is) better. How long is your growing season? Are you zone 3? Someone was just asking about that in another forum. . . .
Anyway, glad you're here. Welcome!
