Posted - Jan 08 2007 : 1:29:16 PM Hi everyone, I'm a wannabe farmgirl living in Decatur, GA outside Atlanta on a woodsy 6 acre homestead. My place was once part of the historic Mathis Dairy, and actually my small farmhouse is supposed to have been a caretaker's cottage. I've been living here since '99 and have had lots of trials and tribulations (and found lots of milk bottles), but still love the lifestyle. My husband and I have 14 dogs, 2 donkeys, a few chickens and some fish. At one time I tried raising fiber goats, but at the moment we don't "produce" anything -other than piles of dog poop.
In the rest of my life, I'm a disgruntled lawyer-turned-grad student and am now writing my dissertation at Emory for Ph.D in cultural studies/visual anthropology. I'm also a part-time assistant for Emory's new community garden project, which we hope will have a farm component in the next few years. And then I'm an officer in the local pit bull club and a pit bull advocate and activist. Many of our dogs are rescued pit bulls and mixes, and we adore them. My hub is a singer/songwriter and rock musician.
I see that there are a number of farmgirls living close by and I'd love to connect! I'm going to hunt around and see what chapters are here. I look forward to swapping stories and stuff and getting to know some of you! |

Posted - Jan 09 2007 : 6:06:23 PM Hi Idgie,
Welcome and have fun. We also have a pitbull mix he is actually a narcotics dog. He was a rescue from Spokane Wa. I was very cautious when my DH brought him into our home. But he is a love bug and great with our kids. You can see his pictures on www.lawdogsUSA.org. Our dog is K-9 Lucky. We love him.

Posted - Jan 08 2007 : 1:43:32 PM Welcome Jere! You live very close to me!! It was a sad day when the dairy closed. There was nothing like Mathis chocolate milk! :) How lucky you are to live there! Your place sounds like a neat place to live. Glad you found us.

Posted - Jan 08 2007 : 1:42:00 PM Wow, Idgie! I was reading along, enjoying all the info, wondering what kind of dogs you have. Then the magic words jumped out at me: pit bulls!!!! Hooray for you! I hope you post stuff about your dogs. I have one full pit and another pit mix. Pits are getting hit hard here in Louisville. The city council had one member put forth a BSL ordinance(guess who was to get banned?). After much protest(Kennel Club, not just 'us folks') a watered down non specific law has been passed, although lawsuits are in the air.
