Posted - May 16 2016 : 4:29:00 PM Hello, I live in Culpeper County Virginia. We live on 65 wooded acres on a small mountain. We have 20 something chickens, 3 dogs and 4 cats. I'm considering guineas and learning what I can about them first. I look forward to learning all I can to be self sufficient on our farm and making new friends. Also, I'm an independent senior caregiver, homeschool.......one more to go out of 5 : ) |

Posted - Jul 11 2016 : 08:18:28 AM Welcome Kalae from sunny Florida. Right now I'd rather be in the snow hehe! I home schooled my one and only child. My beautiful daughter Kayla. She just got married last May. It feels so good to know I had a big part in her education. She is now learning Chinese to teach others about God's Kingdom and devotes a big part of her time to helping others learn more about the Bible. I'm so proud of her!
I'd love to have chickens, but I settle for my gardening. At least I get a reward from my labors. Do you have a garden?

Posted - Jun 01 2016 : 07:59:08 AM Hi, Kalea! Welcome to Farmgirls! Guinea hens are amazing. Wonderful for keeping the bugs down. They are very noisy, though. Buyers Beware. When we had them on our ranch, they woke us up bright and early.

Posted - May 19 2016 : 10:27:00 AM Welcome Kalea wow 65 acres that is fantastic! we hope to someday in near future find us about 5 acres have 1/2 acre at the moment. lots of chickens... love those chickens. I have one girl 'gabby' she is a spoiled hen. husband had to help feed animals when I was sick and got attached to the 3 hens I had and spoiled them. ha other two are gone now hope to get more soon so gabby isn't alone so much. she spends her days with the wallabies. I wanted to get some guineas but husband said NO we are in a residential area they are too loud for his taste. ha I wanted them for natural pest control but will wait for now. I was a homeschool mom my boy just turned 24. will enjoy getting to know you.

Posted - May 16 2016 : 6:21:30 PM Thankyou for the warm welcome : ) I've been reading about them...my husband is especially interested because they eat ticks. He's had a bad case of lyme disease. Eventually when we can afford it I will buy some and start them off so they hopefully stay around. Lately we've had a lot of problems with bear and an occasional dog if it's not our own.

So glad you are here! I love guineas! They are loud but so cool. The females' call is two syllables. When they settle disputes amongst themselves the males wrestle with their necks. When they go after bugs they do a funny hovercraft move. They are more independent than chickens. Some people complain cause theirs leave. One woman told her that hers all left on their own and moved to the nearby state game lands where of course, the hunters hate their alert noisy ways.
