Posted - Dec 26 2006 : 12:26:44 PM Hello. My name is Laura. I live in Pontotoc Mississippi. I have been a farm girl all my 39 years. I was raised on a farm and now my husband and I have one of our own. My husband Lamar has cows and I raise show goats and also have barrel horses. Together we have 6 kids. Don't worry all but 2 are grown. My youngest 2 , David and Emily show goats and horses. I also show goats and then barrel race. I enjoy gardening , where every summer I have a garden growing vegetables and flowers. I also help my Dad with his farm. There wasn't any boys in our family so we 3 girls learned how to drive tractors and then learned how to cook. People sortof look at me funny when they see how I live for I believe in living off the land. I would love to see more young people learn how to farm and be thankful for what they have. |

Posted - Jan 02 2007 : 3:48:35 PM Hi Laura, been away for a couple of weeks so just getting around to saying Howdy!! I can see you alredy fit right in. I rode barrel horses when I was growing up in Colorado but have lived on the east coast for some time now so haven't had the pleasure of the three in a long time. I do miss it alot. We just bought our own farm (will hoprfully close soon) so may get back into it. Have been managing a beef farm for someone else for quite a few years now and those guys have taken up all my time. Glad you found us! Kel |

Posted - Dec 30 2006 : 06:47:28 AM Oh Laura... He gets the same treatment? You crack me up. I've been told NO MORE CATS, but it had to be taken out of my hands. Our previous dog decided for me that we weren't having any more cats... or anything else as long as she controlled the perimeter. I think Ellie May is a perfect name for you!

Posted - Dec 29 2006 : 2:34:01 PM Oh when I was expecting my daughter Emily , who is 13 going on 30, my first husband and I had a dairy farm. One day we was feeding and came upon a baby racoon that didn't have it's eyes open. The mother had been killed. So I took the baby home and raised it. We keep the coon for nearly 5 years. Everytime the coon heard the water running in the bathroom he would run and jump in. So we had to make sure the door was closed at all times. |

Posted - Dec 29 2006 : 2:12:19 PM Ok Ann. Here is how the story goes.... Now remember I have 4 horses, 3 dogs, 2 cats, goats. If anyone had an animal they didn't want I took it home with me. At one time I had 5 horses, 4 dogs, 2 cats, goats, 2 hamsters, a talking bird and 1 iguna. Had one dog, one cat , 2 hamsters , the bird, and the iguna all in the house. Every time the bird seen one of the animals he would holler" here kitty" regardless of what it was. The bird died of old age, dog died from being runned over, 1 cat ran away ( after it ate the hamsters) and I sorta killed the iguna. My Husband told me after that NO MORE ANIMALS. Yeah right, I thought. A friend of mine said he had some cats to give me. Being an animal lover I took them. Put them into my tack room for I knew Lamar wouldn't be going in there. I ended up giving one of the cats to my cousin, that left me with 3. The other 2 females found a hole and got out. Went catting I guess for I haven't seen them since. The tomcat was left in the tack room. One night heard some cats fighting. Lamar went out to see what was going on. I just keep right on crocheting for I knew I would be busted. He came back in and said a tomcat was messing with his cat CeeCee. I never opened my mouth. The next day Lamar, David, Emily and I was clipping goats. David looked up and said, " Mom's cat is in the tree. " Lamar looked at me and wanted to know what cat was that. I never slacked up from clipping. David then informed Lamar that I had several cats in the tack room. Boy, did Lamar move fast to the tack room, came back and said there was no cats there. David said of course not , she gave one away, the females ran away and her dumb tomcat is stuck in the tree. So that's where the name Ellie Mae came from. He says I treat the animals better than him but there is no truth in that. He gets the same treatment. |

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 06:29:21 AM Hello Kelly. I know that Ginger is going to be riding some of the stock shows. She is going to send me a calendar of the dates. Will be glad to pass it along. See if the school has a ffa program. Surely there is either a ffa or 4h program. If not let me know I will send you information on 4h and maybe you could start your own club for your kids and their friends. There is a alot to do in both programs.

Posted - Dec 27 2006 : 4:10:01 PM Thanks Laura! No I havent done anything 4-H with them. Not sure where to start. I know in the high school they have some programs. I will have to look into that & see what my 16 year old might like to do. Also look locally for my 12 year old.
I went on the website you gave. Weatherford is not too far from me. Your cousin is beautiful. Looks like she has a lot of fun riding. Maybe she will be at the stock show this coming year. This year was my first time. I never knew there was so much to do. I saw many of the show cattle & didn't realize that some of them are more dolled up than show dogs. I do have a lot to learn about farming & the farm life, but I am on my way.
I've never been to Mississippi, but if I ever head that way... I'll let ya know!

Posted - Dec 27 2006 : 3:52:05 PM Hello to you Marybeth.I would love to hear about your girls and their barrel racing. Do they do the 4d? People would look at you weird if you go into the bank with a pair of shorts , rubber boots, and a big shady hat. haha Been there and done that. As my Grandfather would say" Laura dances to the beat of her own drum" God bless him. I lost him 2 years ago. He was a wonderful man. Was a man who loved his family and loved horses. When he passed away we honored him by taking him to the cemetry in his wagon and horses. What a wonderful sight it made. My grandfather, Daddy Jack, taking his last ride in the wagon. Posted - Dec 27 2006 : 3:45:06 PM Hello Melanie. As far as knowledge goes I don't believe I have very much. I do love my goats. I have boer goats which are meat goats and I also have purchased one alpine nanny and a nubian nanny, which both are dairy goats. I plan to cross breed them for they make the best meat goats. I have two wethers that are doing real good in the shows. They are separeted from the rest of the group. I have 4 weeks to really get them into top shape. They are put onto a tread mill 3x a week (don't laugh) It mainly gets their muscles developed. I'm not into medications like alot of the showers do. Would love to hear about your life. Welcome, Laura! I'm also a horsewoman, teacher, and trainer. I primarily do hunt seat horses and keep them at home, but winter at a barrel barn. I really appreciate the excellence of the owner's training program; and this year she took first at the Appy World with her home grown, home trained horse!
I love to garden too, and enjoy outdoor life so much! I'm glad you've joined us; I look forward to hearing about your life!
I have always wanted to try doing the hunt seat. I think my happy appy would do great for she jumps all the time
