Hi,

I'm new to the Farmgirl Sisterhood, but have been reading MaryJanes Farm for several years and loving it! I'm in the process of turning my suburban yard into a mini-orchard and a series of vegetable and flower gardens. My intention is to feed myself, but also to share the bounty with local food pantries and homeless shelters. I also want to provide instruction for others on how they can move towards healthy food and healthy living no matter where they live or what their income level. I'm hoping to eventually use my yard as a sort of "classroom" for others to learn how to do what I'm doing. I'm working with a wonderful permaculturist who is teaching me a lot about how garden organically and also how to work with the earth, developing a true kinship with nature.

I also write a blog about my experiences in this endeavor as well as some creative nature writing.

I've joined the Sisterhood to learn from and share with all of you. There is so much experience and knowledge to be shared and I look forward to interacting with all my new "sisters"!

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Winnie (Sister #3109) for the kind welcome letter. It arrived close to my birthday and was an unexpected, pleasant surprise!

I went to Sturbridge for the first time a couple of summers ago - loved it !!!

If you ever get a chance, stop at the Wayside and visit the mill (doesn't operate in the winter, but I think you can look inside), the Mary Martha Chapel ( built by Henry Ford for his mother and mother-in-law) and the Inn. Inside the Inn there are several rooms of local historical exhibits. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stayed at the Inn while he was writing "Tales of a Wayside Inn" - thus the name of the Inn now. It was originally called the Red Horse Tavern.

Awesome! I have a friend who is the Curator of Mills at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA. I'll bet he'd be interested in that.

Where in VT are you from?

It's in South Sudbury. They have a restored grist mill there that was built by Henry Ford. The miller is a friend of ours, and my boyfriend's father built the waterwheel on the mill. We are there a couple of times a year to visit on our way to Vermont to visit my family.

Hi Beekeepersgirl,

I'm in Holden - not too far from Marlborough, though I admit I don't know the Marlborough area at all. Just don't have much call to go out that way very often. I've heard of the Wayside Inn, but never been there. That's in Sudbury, right?

Hi Eileen !

Welcome from a former Vermont gal - now living in Northeast PA. I am in MA several times a year, usually around Marlborough. Are you familiar with that area or the Wayside Inn?

Thanks, Goat Girl. By the way, both of my parents are from Vermont (Mom from Bennington and Dad from Vergennes). Vermont is my favorite place on earth!

Greetings from Northern Vermont. You have more snow than we do up here but we get the crazy cold. It's been -20+ many mornings this season and this weekend is expecting a lot more of it. Vermont sent some National Guard troops down to Boston to help clear out. We all need to help each other and get along. Take care and keep your sense of humor.

I am dreaming about working in the garden again, which right now is under several feet of snow with more yet to come. With such a rough winter this year spring is going to feel like even more of a miracle than ever when it finally arrives!

Welcome Eileen!

Your endeavors sound wonderful! So often I have had several of the same dreams; working on starting a small fruit production situation this spring and hope to teach others someday all the amazing aspects of this life style.

Enjoy The Connection!

Eileen Welcome to the greatest place for farm girls!

I hope your gardening adventure turns out the way you hope. I am still working on my organic garden and this year will be another adventure to see if I can get things to stay alive in this hot Florida sun.
I will post the process on my blog too. I'll be interested in seeing your blog post too.

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome! I am so happy to be here and can't wait to get to know everyone.

Teri, I live right on the Holden/Worcester line and I'm very familiar with some of the towns you mentioned. I've made friends with several farmers from nearby towns and have learned so much from them. Yes, plans right now are mostly on paper, but it is fun to plan things out during the long, cold winter then see them become a reality in the spring.

With the help of a friend, I built a cold frame this fall and while the lettuce didn't do so well, it is producing a stellar crop of radishes. For a first try I'll take that as a success!

Hi Eileen,

It's wonderful to meet you. It's so great to have someone from my neck of the woods so to speak. There really aren't many farmgirls from around here. Hope to see you on the boards and welcome! You are going to love it here.

hugs,
Marcy

Hi Eileen.
Welcome!
From a former resident of your beautiful state. Holden, is such a pretty area ...
you are just a hop and skip from Worcester (my hubby was born there) the second largest city in MA.
Sounds great what you are doing with your land, I look forward to hearing about it.
Although, this time of year, you are doing much of your planning on paper.
We still have most of our family in MA. Worcester, Spencer,Leicester and Gardner and Orange ... and a few other towns ...
Enjoy your time here.
