I am new to this site although I love Mary Janes magazine. I am married and live on a 147 acre farm in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. We raise registered Belted Galloway cattle on our farm and I have a small flock of chickens. I also do a large raised bed vegetable garden every year and can and freeze what we grow. We have a very busy life and just returned from the Western Belted Galloway Association meeting in Reno earlier this month. I hope to meet other farm women and make some new friends.

So glad you joined us Sharon. We have a lot of cattle farmers here on the forum. My Windy Pines cousin, Michele, is one of them. There's loads to learn, share, and laugh at here. This is also a great place for your farmgirl friends to rejoice with you in your triumphs and to pray for you during your trials. Enjoy the forum, it is a great place to be!

Hello cajungal,
My husband and I have a 147 acre farm in the mid Willamette Valley in Oregon. We live 5 miles outside of the town of Brownsville. It is one of, if not the oldest town in Oregon and still has many of the old original buildings. It sits on the banks of the Calapoolia River (a Native American name). The population is 1,600 people. The bank in town still has the original bars on the teller windows. We also own an adjacent 5 acre parcel that we have a new double wide manufactured home on that our son and daughter-in-law live in. Our son works the farm with us and our daughter-in-law works at the grocery store in Brownsville. About a third of our farm is in timber (Douglas Fir) and oak trees. The rest is in pasture. We have a large pond that is frequented by Canadian Geese and a variety of ducks. We raise Registered Belted Galloway Cattle. Some people refer to them as "Oreo Cookie" cows because they are black on the front and back with a wide white belt around the middle. They originated in the Galloway area of Scotland and first were imported to the United States in 1939. There are several breeders in the Eastern part of the US, but very few out here in the west. We have the largest herd in Oregon at around 30, plus our bull. We belong to the Western Belted Galloway Association and I do their newsletter. Belted Galloway's are beef cattle and very hardy and docile animals. We do breeding with our bull and through AI (artificial insemination). This summer we had seven new babies born on the farm. We do all our own ear tagging, vaccinations, banding (the boys we want to turn into steers to sell for meat) and just about anything else that needs done. I also have a small flock of 6 hens we keep for eggs and we put in a vegetable garden every spring and can and freeze what we grow. The original part of our farm house was built in 1915. This is the second house built on this farm, the first one burned down in the 1800's. We did a complete remodel of the house in 2012 but kept some of the 1915 beams in the living room and dinning room. Well that is enough about me. I would love to hear about some of you other ladies and what you do.

Welcome, Sharon. I'm a bit jealous of your 147 acres. Tell us more!
