Hi, my name is Holly and I am very excited about becoming a part of this wonderful group of people. I am very nervous though, I am not familiar with "chat rooms". However, a chat room with a bunch of farmgirls is very exciting to me. I live on 10 acres in a small town that I grew up in. My hubby and I have 2 kids together, 3 and 4 years old. We each had 2 when we met. My kids from my previous marriage are 10 and 11, his are 18 and 21. We are wanting to have more, if that is what God has in store for us. We have 2 dogs, several cats, chickens and ducks. I had a pretty good size garden this year and hope to continue to grow. I also planted a small orchard with fruit and pecan trees. My kids are active in sports, especially soccer (which I am currently in charge of at our school). My husband & I have our own business. We grade yards and install sod. Currently we buy our sod and haul it with our own semi. I would like to have our own sod farm, but that doesn't seem possible yet. I always dreamed of being a farmer's wife and having lots of kids. I love to bake and cook. I can alot of food from our garden and orchards in our area. I used to do wedding cakes, but try not to now due to lack of time. We did so well working for other companies (finacially) but for our kids sake decided to go out on our own. However, going into business for yourself is a big risk and has caused us a lot of debt. We work very hard every day and hope and pray that it will get better. In the mean time, I have 2 goals. I would like to get my business out of debt and to become self sufficient. I feel that I am so limited on time that I am not doing what I need to do as a wife, mother, housekeeper and bookkeeper. I have stretched myself so thin that I feel I am not fullfilling all of my duties in the way that I should. I also have a tendency to ramble on (as you can tell) about what I am doing and what I need to be doing. What it boils down to though is that I want to be the best wife, mother and farmgirl that I can be. I love the country and wish that I never had to go to town for anything (I am working on that). I fall asleep every night reading MaryJane's magazines and book, Back Home Magazine, anything to give me hope that I am on the right path. I could say so much more but I have a feeling that I have overwhelmed everyone with my issues. However, I am a true farmgirl at heart and hope that I can raise my girls to have the same values & morals.

Thank you for your patience!

Kim, I have not canned meat. I have read about it but always end up freezing it. Don't feel bad about weeds. I got an old book off ebay on mulching and having no weeds. I haven't finished it yet but I will definately give you any beneficial information. By the way, where is Ofallon?

Me too. Except I am living right outside of Ofallon, Missouri. I love living a rural lifestyle. It is hard work and very fulfilling.

The garden is almost finished, there are still some peppers, just a few tomatoes, asparagus fern, sweet potatoes somewhere but I can't remember where exactly (it is hard to tell with the weeds so high).

You said you can food, so do I---but have you canned meat? I would love to hear what your experience (or non experience is)?

There is nothing better than a house full of happy hens.

Welcome, Holly! You sound like a great person, and most definitely a Farmgirl at Heart!
Everything I am reading in these replies to your post applies to me, too. I find it incredible that we come from so many different places (geographic, stage of life, and more) yet we share so very many of the same dreams, hopes, goals, fears, and this is a wonderful place to share all of that.
ou'll find lots of helpful information, tips, tricks and ideas and support here, and isn't it helpful just knowing that there are a lot of us caught up in the "I'm trying to keep up with everything" syndrome. I hope this forum gives you a chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy. (And yes, I am addicted to keeping up with everyone here, too!)

I just want to thank everyone for taking a few minutes of their time to welcome me to this wonderful group of farmgirls. I was so excited to see how many posts I have received today. The only problem I seem to have now is that I keep getting on and reading all of the posts when I am supposed to be getting my book work done! I guess if I am going to be addicted to a website, this is the best place to be.

Thank you again for all of your warm welcomes.

Hi Holly and welcome to the group!!
I tend to be a rambler too - I am trying to keep it down a bit! You will love this forum - I only joined a few months ago after reading the posts for a while - had to get up the confidence to join my first chat room!! Now I love every minute of it and so will you!!
Best wishes and keep dreaming,
Jayne

Hi Holly and fellow Missouri farmgirl!! Where is Cleveland? I'm down here in West Plains, by the Ark. line. You sound right at home here, this isn't the typical chat room you hear horror stories about so relax and just enjoy it all. Were a blended family too, we just celebrated our 14th W. A. yesterday, between us we raised 5 kids full time, and now are blessed with 3 wonderful daughter in laws and 3 sweet grandbabies! Don't be so hard on yourself, just take each day as it comes and hold onto that farmgirl spirit and you'll be fine!! Looking forward to hearing more from you!

Holly- Welcome to the forum!! You don't have to be nervous about this "chat room!" I think of it as pulling up a rocking chair and having a conversation with your friends on the front porch!
Soooo, take a deep breath, relax and enjoy your time here.
I always admire women who have their own business. I have not yet made the leap, but I am right on the edge. Being at home until my kids finish school has been my focus, and this is my last year!! I have 2 graduating next May- my son John Albert from the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and my daughter Ainslie from our local high school.
It will be a whole new world for me, as my oldest,Nathan, and the youngest will be leaving home next summer!!
I have a little saying on my frige that night help you- "If you get everything done today, what will you do tomorrow?" I breathe those words! I had a tendency to try to be and do everything for everyone ALL the time, and all it did was make me tired and like you, stretched too thin. So, I got rid of the big "S" from my chest and I feel so much better!! Now, when I do things like canning and sewing and gardening, I do it because I love to, not because I have to. And that has made all the difference!
And Holly, you already are the best you there is!!

That IS the answer..I don't sleep as much as I should. And boy does my laundry/sewing room and bedroom need a good cleaning too!! YOu can find me canning, the kids sitting around the table doing homework, dinner in the oven and the phone ringing, kids at the door looking to play and all sorts of chaos most days here. I do get alot more done at night though. Tonight I worked on finishing a quilt top for oldest daughter..who turns 12 on Thursday. I am going to have it machine quilted..for durability. I love to hand quilt..but for a 12 year old machine quilting seems more sturdy. I got it done..hooray. But..those pears are still waiting in the kitchen and the tomatoes are almost ready to be salsa and get canned...
But we did have peach pie last night..my favorite!!
If you ever want to send an email to anyone here just click on their name on the left side and their profile will come up and let you email them. I am not good at all the technical stuff..but that one always works for me.
I really should go to bed!

AuAunt Jenny,
Thank you for such a quick response. Not knowing how to get a message back to you, I got on your website. I am so jealous. I have a few peaches left, but ended up throwing some away (mainly because I was doing a wedding cake for a family friend). I would have loved to put up that many peaches. I canned some and also froze peach pie filling. Sounds like you do something similar. How do find the time to do all of that canning with the kids? I am amazed, yet glad that there is someone who feels the same way I do. It is obvious that if I have to get online at 1:15 a.m., that maybe I am a little short on time (and sleep). How do you do it?
Aunt Jenny Posted - Sep 19 2006 : 11:02:19 PM
Welcome Holly!!! You sound just great. I tend to ramble on and on ...probably worse than you! So you are going to do just fine here. There are other of us ramblers here too!
You sound like you are doing just the right things to be a great example to your kids..teaching all the important things. I have 3 grown boys and then 4 still at home 2 nine year olds, a 10 year old and an almost 12 year old...and the older ones have told me now that they appreciated all the years I stayed home and did child care so that I could be there when they got home from me and how they loved that I volunteered at their shcool and was cub scout leader, room mom, team mom and all that. They didn't always tell me at the time, but now they do...so I know I am still doing the right thing. Being in business for yourself is hard, but sounds like you are doing what you love. Sounds like you have the same dream I have always had..to be a farmer's wife and have lots of kids...I do what little farming gets done around here with alot of help from my husband..but he isn't a farmer for sure. How neat that you have 10 acres..what a perfect amount of land!!
Anyway..now I have rambled! I just want to welcome you to the group..you will fit right in!!
