Looking for tips for a new OP gardener. I moved here in July and love it! Love It! Love it! Have one raised bed for veggies and intend on adding another before Oct. I have planted Irises, Rosemary, Blueberries, Cherry Trees, and a pear tree. Among other things. Any helpful tips for a newbie from Texas, So. California? raingardenmeme

Hi all, our rains have started. Although it is sunny today we got 6" sun. Mon n tuesday. Had to pull up my tomatoes n hang them in a dry spot so they will ripen n not split.

Hi Lillian and welcome to the MJF forum! It sounds like the area you live in must be beautiful. I have a small raised garden bed myself but I live on the frozen tundra of Northeastern Wisconsin so my gardening season is about over here. I know you'll find lots of helpful ladies who will have information you can use on this site. Enjoy!

Haven'T had any deer problems, coyotes run through the property at least once a month and a bear got into our trash can last night but no one has messed with the garden, yet. Getting ready to harvest our sunflowers for seeds for the 1st time ever, any suggestions?

Welcome to Washington State Lillian!! I originally from the west side, but live in eastern Wa. now. My gardening experience on the west side was like none other, like Edlund said you can garden almost year round with little effort!! Happy gardening!!

thanks Sabrina for the info on the bulb farm. My neighbor gave me some dahlias and they grew well. Have been busy with childrens church n not able to go online much lately but always gardening!

I love bulb plants! Iris are my fav! I planted dahlia a neighbor gave me. And i planted scotch moss in an area i dont want to mow. The moss is going crazy! The dahlias bloomed too so i guess i'M headed in the rt direction. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome Lillian! I live in Olympia - about 20 minutes from Shelton. My husband and I grew up in Shelton. The WSU extension office is an excellent resource as is the Thurston County Master Gardener's group. The Mason County area is a great fertile area and is great for most cool-weather veges and all sorts of flowers. When we lived in Shelton, I loved growing roses, had a huge vege garden. Hi Lilian, welcome to Washington state! Check out Seattle Tilth's website. They have a wonderful booklet about gardening in the maritime northwest that includes to-do lists and planting recommendations for each month of the year. Another great online resource is the Washington State University Extension. With a little effort you can garden year round in the Puget Sound area. I live in Renton a few miles south of Seattle. Happy gardening!
