Help!
Does anyone know where i can purchase earth friendly cleaning products? I have 2 children with allergies and don't like the idea of using chemicals in the home. Any advice would be appreciated!

The laundry soap is easy. I think I have posted the recipe before on this forum...hmmm..for the life of me can't remember exactly where though..it is 1/3 cup powdered washing soda and 1/3 cup borax (both found in the laundry section of any grocery store..usually up high with the Biz and stuff like that, and 1/3 of a bar of grated Fels Naptha soap. It is usually available at the grocery store too...our walmart here has it....shouldn't be too hard to find. It is a big bar. You get two clean gallon jugs or a 2 gallon bucket with lid would work too. I dissolve the grated soap (I use and old cheese grater when I do it) in a few cups of boiling hot water in the jugs or buckets..I divide it evenly into the two jugs putting it in with a funnel. Let that sit a few hours until it is sort of jellyish...then add the borax and washing soda (divided evenly if you use two containers) and slowly add warm water to mostly fill the jugs. I stir it with a long handle from a wooden spoon..you could use a stick..or a whole spoon if you use a bucket....I need to use a bucket more..the jugs are harder....and then I usually add a few drops of lavender essential oil...or orange is nice too..just because I like it..not neccesary. When it is cool you can shake it (with the lid on of course) and you will need to do that just about every time you use it....it does tend to separate. It is incredibly cheap to make and I use about a cup in a big load of dirty stuff. I hope you try this Lisa..it is a fun easy thing to do that makes you feel really good about yourself.
The handsoap isn't liquid..I just make bar soap. Have for gosh probably 15 years. A friend and I were talking about it the other day. I realized I haven't bought store soap in a long long time. I make a veggie based soap the most often..with coconut oil, olive oil and veg shortening
in it. I would be happy to give you that recipe if you want too. Good luck.

Hooray..that sounds wonderful. I use alot of baking soda, vinegar and things along that line now and make my own laundry soap and hand soap...always love to see new things. The online mag sounds great too..you farmchicks are great!!

Thanks for your nice words! We're very excited with the new project, it's coming along really well. It's been a lot of hard work, and we're really pleased. I'll definitely let you know when it's "live". (We're well ahead of schedule, so it will probably be sooner than our expected April 1 premiere date!)

We have a new line of Farm Chicks Home Keeping products coming out (along with the premiere of our new online magazine) in April. Our line will include laundry soap, laundry softener, linen/room spray, dish soap, liquid soap (hand & body), and lotion. Our line is natural, contains no harsh chemicals, is American made, and never tested on animals.

One of the MJF magazines has an article about safe home cleaning. It is the most recent issue and is on page 17. The reference is a book called "The Naturally Clean Home" by Karyn Siegel-Maier. It gives simple recipes for alternatives to chemical cleaners. Perhaps a search on Amazon would find you a copy of this book, or contact Clearly Natural at www.clearly-natural.com.

Do you have a nearby organic food co-op where you can shop? Mine is about an hours drive from me but well worth the drive once a month or so. You might also be able to order from Mountain People through your local co-op if you need things regularly perhaps they can be seen online as well.. Ours offers a 10 to 15 % discount when we order a ful bag or bottle or case of a regularly used product. If you google food co-op and your state you will find the nearest one. For body care products you might take a look on line at www.JPDurga.com. they have the safest and purest body care products I have found any where.

Welcome Lisa! I'm sure there are lots of sites that feature earth friendly and human friendly cleaning products, but you might start with harmony.com or gaiam.com. Or try a search at google and see what comes up.
