Posted - May 19 2011 : 12:14:08 PM Hi All,
New girl here from Missouri. My hubby and I live in a straw bale home just a few miles north of Kansas City on a little over 11 acres with our three horses (Tennessee Walker, Appaloosa, Haflinger), one black bay Molly saddle mule, four dogs (two German Shepherd girls, one part German Shorthair Pointer girl, and one Coonhound boy ---all rescues!), 7 cats (2 girls, 5 boys - all strays/ferals turned velcro-kitties), two beehives (1 Italians in a top bar hive, and 1 Minnesota Hygenic in a Warre Hive), and I'll soon be a chickie Mama next week when my 5 barred rock chicks arrive. So, I work in the city to feed all of those mouths, and love to come home and putter in our veggie/herb/flower gardens - all organic of course, and play with my critters. I also love to crochet, sew, and embroidery. I enjoy making handbags of all kinds in my spare time, but I don't have much spare time to generate as many handbags as I design in my planner pages while sitting at my desk or in meetings at work. I'm also trained in natural hoofcare for equines and since we are in the heart of founder country, specialized in laminitis rehabilitation. I did that full time for awhile, but found it difficult to compete with the traditional farrier influences and decided I'd best get myself back to my desk job as a software database professional in order to pay the bills. I barely have time to trim my own herd anymore, with all there is to do, and I'm just getting too old and stiff to keep up the stamina that is required for that kind of work. Before learning natural hoofcare, I became an Equine Touch Practitioner, and learned some wonderful ways to help horses through a very gentle touch, which I still practice on my own herd and pups as well. That's it in a nutshell. I'm so glad to find the Farmgirls here and look forward to sharing a cup of tea and a few thoughts and experiences. Best, Paula

Posted - May 24 2011 : 08:28:21 AM Welcome from Tennessee Justine! You have found your tribe here. I'm sure you will enjoy these farmgirls as much as I do. I had to smile when you mentioned the cow bell. I put a dinner bell out front to call the kids and grandkids in with. It gets used more often to call me in at near dark! Jump right in and join us! Posted - May 20 2011 : 08:21:36 AM What a wonderful warm welcome from all of the Farmgirls. Many thanks!! I'm so looking forward to getting to know everyone. I hope this isn't too long of a post, but I wanted to reply to everyone.
Laurie, I had to look up Patchogue, NY...you really ARE on the island! We made it as far as Andes, NY one year for a friend's wedding. That was such beautiful country. Those big rolling mountains were just gorgeous. Maybe someday I'll make it further east to see NYC and the island.
Helena, I just spent a wonderful little vacation at your blog while sipping coffee and enjoying your beautiful photos and stories. What kind of chick babies are you expecting? I saw barred rocks in one of the photos. I love vintage things too, and try to add a little bit of something vintage to each handbag I make. My favorites are vintage buckles and of course buttons!!
Carol, We used to be neighbors somewhat! Three years ago my hubby and I moved from Harrisonville, where we had our little ranch for ten years. We lived just off of Blinkerlight Road...and yes, ladies there is a blinking light at the main intersection! I always say that I live in a kitty vortex, although the vortex seems to have followed me from Harrisonville to Holt. Maybe it is more likely that I just have a soft spot for those kids in furry britches.
Dawn, Back to google maps to find Homer Glen. I love that everyone is from so many places. You are about as far out from Chicago as we are from Kansas City. The one thing that stands out in my mind about the trip I made to Chicago was how everyone changed lanes so quickly! Then I noticed that lots of cars had dented fenders!! Folks are a little slower paced in the Kansas City area, which can also be kind of challenging sometimes!
Brenda, I visited your blog too and see you haven't been in Pleasant Hill long? It is also just a short distance from our old homeplace down 291 Hwy. Beauregard is our coonhound. He is 11 years old now, and we adopted him from a shelter in Follansbee, WV. His shelter name was Highway, because that is where they found him wandering as a wee little pup. He is a Treeing Walker and has the tell-tale chopping bark that a Walker carries. He treed one of our kitties once, but that was the extent of his hunting career. (The kitty came out safe and sound) Now he trees the biscuits in the jar on the counter and ALWAYS barks for his dinner.
Kate, Indeed, I too dream about selling my creations. If only I had time to make them! Summertime is spent outside, and my hubby has to ring the cowbell to bring me in for dinner. Perhaps my business plan should include wintertime activities of creating handbags as well as summertime activities of raising herbs, honey and wildflowers!! Wouldn't that be a dream come true??
Susan, Holt was my first move "out of the city" when I moved to a little three acre home on my own where I could have my horse outside my bedroom window. When my hubby and I started sharing our lives together we moved to Harrisonville for more acreage. But ten years later we moved "back" and live only about three miles from my old place on 33 Hwy, which is so awesome because my first horse is buried there and we drive by Apache's gravesite every day going to and from work. Our current home was built by a green architect who designed it with an artist's eye. It is made from mostly locally obtained and sustainable materials, and recycled artifacts. Natural Home Magazine did an article on it right after we moved in which is kind of neat.
Putting the final touches on the chickie nursery this weekend! Think I'm going to work from home next week when they arrive so I can check in on the little peeps from time to time...okay, okay, I know...I'll really be glued to the side of their brooder all day!!
Have a great day everyone!! -Paula

Posted - May 19 2011 : 1:13:02 PM Hi Paula,
Welcome! So nice to meet you. I love your family of fur-babies! What an assortment. :-) I will soon be a chick Mom too, and am expecting 5 chicks in June. Can't wait! I love to sew, knit and play in my veggie and herb gardens, and I love to go thrifting. I'm a vintage nut and love just about anything vintage, especially fabrics.
