Hi Farmgirls!
My name is Kendra. I was born and raised in the city (Chicago), but am proud to say that I'm an Indiana farmgirl by choice, as I have been enjoying rural living (horse farm, 6 acres)since 2001.
I enjoy horses, rabbits, and cats. I also enjoy organic gardening!
I'm married, pushin' 40, and have two young sons ages 5 and 7.
I look forward to hearing and learning from you all.
Future plans include starting a chicken coop and building a cage free bunny run.

Wow! Hi Hoosier Sisters! I'm new here, but live near Fort Wayne. I'm 34, have 4 kids (1 stepdaughter,1 stepson, and my 2 boys). We have about 30 head of sheep, 3 Boer goats, 4 beef heifers, 5 chickens, 1 Immortal Chicken (Parmagiana - she's 8 years old and she still lays!), 10 chicks, our old Rottweiler, an Australian Cattle Dog, a Border Collie/Great Dane, and 4 barn cats. I love gardening, herbs, flowers, whatever. I love music, I play flute,and tin whistle, piano (not well), and have picked around on dulcimer. I also like to cross stitch and latch hook. But I love taking care of the chickens. They seem to be the most rewarding farm animal. They're the only ones that give you insstant gratification daily after you nurture and usher them into laying! So happy to be here!

Kendra- Tennessee would love to have you! I'm in middle TN but love the smokies too. We do a lot of camping, paddling and hiking there. Yep, a covered pen is a must if the chickens are penned. They can't get away from the varmint that can get in.

I would love to live in Tennessee someday; we love the Smokies and have visited a number of times. I have five kitties right now, two are barn cats (fixed and vaccinated!) and 3 are indoor. As much as I'd love to have free range chickens, I believe I will need to provide a secure coop and fenced and top fenced enclosure for them. I have learned a hard lesson recently on the massacre of my two bunns who lost their lives to one of our barn cats (or a feral cat, we're not sure) so we are changing the way we house our vulnerable animals outdoors. I had a high horse fence for the bunns (but not a mesh roof) and they did fine for two years, but recently the cats jumped the fence and got in. :(
Today (happy dance!) my kids and I are adopting three new baby bunnies! They will be in a bunny hutch until large enough to be in a run safely; I plan to rebuild/refurbish our existing run to provide a safe home for them.

My husband and I were married in Maine! Sullivan, actually. As this was a second wedding for both of us, we decided on a "planned elope" with a built in honeymoon. We really enjoyed touring the Bar Harbor area and hope to return again soon. :)
I too am thrilled to have discovered Mary Jane's magazine and this forum!

Welcome from a Tennessee Farmgirl sister! Glad you found the sisters! You will LOVE having chickens. They are so much fun. It still amazes me when I reach in the nest box and pull out a perfect protein package. It is just a little different than fresh produce you grew yourself. The chickens are participatory. Jeeze, I sound crazy! But you will see what i mean when you get your girls and they lay their first eggs. :) You didn't ask for advice but I sure wish someone had warned me- Build your coop bigger than you think you will need. My first coop is now my hen hospital and new chick starter house. 5 chickens were not enough!
I grew up with horses but don't have any now. Currently have 2 cats (inside) hoping we get a barn kitty soon. Just waiting for someone to dump one off. Sad fact of living in the rural south.

I know you're going to fit right in here.
Lots of kindred spirits for sure.
I live in Maine but grew up in Rockford and worked in Chicago for a time.
Chicago is a beautiful city and I love visiting.
I used to ride (and own) horses but no longer do. I still love riding though, when I get the chance.
My husband and I have two cats but no kids (if you don't count the cats as "furkids"). I love bunnies...
I'm learning about organic gardening but I know very little.
My Farmgirl friends here are invaluable teachers.
I'm a woodworker and have been thinking a lot about designing and building chicken coops.
I can't have chickens right now but I can still build coops!
