Hi Farmgirls and Citygirls,
I'm from Michigan and love reading MaryJane's magazine.
I want to take a Canning Class, but hard to find one here in
Michigan. Blueberry season is coming soon. Our city of South
Haven, which is on the westside of our state has it's blueberry
festival coming up. That's where the Canning Class would be
helpful.
Anyone have any Canning tips for beginners?

Welcome Jeanette!

I've been away from the forums this summer (life got crazy), but am just getting back in the swing of things again and saw your thread. I'm actually extremely close to you! I love in Benton Harbor so I'm just south of South Haven. Last year I took my kids to the blueberry festival. It was fun but I was disappointed on how much non-blueberry things they had vs. blueberry related events. Anyways, if you are wanting to can I might be able to help you out. I love canning and freezing foods. What specific items were you wanting to can? If they are some of the things I do, you are more then welcome to come spend a day with me in my kitchen and learn how I do it. While you are here you can check out our 1.1 acre homestead in town. We have a huge garden (100x50 ft), 12 fruit trees, sugar maple trees, and 4 laying hens all here in town! I also have my office set up to be half sewing room.

Take Care!
Emily

Hi Jeannette,

Glad to see another Michigander on the boards! Have you tried you tube? I found some pretty good instruction there when I started canning a few years ago. Good luck with your quest. Judy

Welcome loveladybugs,
I found a canning class at our local county extension office - do they have those in Michigan - probably the 4-H office? I start my first class a week from Thursday and can hardly wait! Welcome, btw!

welcome from western NC. get your hands on a Ball canning book (maybe library)? I've had mine forever and i constantly use it at canning season.

Make my words soft and tender, for I may have to eat them. :)

Jeanette, I found this listing on craigslist for someone wanting to can in your area. Maybe she'd be willing to teach you what she knows as you go and maybe she's heard from some other more experienced people who are interested. Sounds like fun. http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/act/1879951923.html

Hey Jeanette! Welcome to the farmgirl connection. You're going to love it here! Are you sure there aren't any canning classes near you? Michigan is actually huge on upick farms. I'm in Battle Creek and I've come across a few things like that at the local community colleges. So good to see another Michigander! I think we're going to take over here pretty soon LOL
