Posted - May 22 2006 : 12:33:01 PM Hello Everyone, I am a farmgirl at heart! My mama was a farmgirl sharecropper in Texas and my grandmother was an Iowa farmgirl. I grew up going to grandma Minerva Jane's home on the farm in Nichols Iowa and relish each and every memory of those times.
I'll never forget the fragrance of coal oil and yeast bread on cold winter mornings or the sound of the feeders in the pig pens as the sows and baby pigs lifted, then dropped it during their morning slops.
I can still see our mulberry stained feet and the redness of our thumbs after shelling field corn when I close my eyes and think of it. The sound of rain on a tin roof or a rooster crowing in the distance, all bring grandma in her apron or grandpa in his Osh Kosh B'Gosh's sharply into focus and a smile to my soul!
Sorry.....just remembering. Anyway, I an now a city girl...always have been, but I am raising my two little city girls to enjoy planting flowers and herbs in our little sunny pots and around the mailbox and sitting under our shady oak with hostas and spiderwort and fusia dripping beauty all around us. I've taught them to call up doves and owls out of our back 3 acres of woods (it is a protected watershed...we can't fell any trees.) I'm teaching them to sew aprons, or skirts or whatever their little fingers desire. They can also bake a delicious chocolate cake and have helped me change a tire! So yes, I am a farmgirl at heart and hope to always be one. Someday though, I am going to be a real farmgirl. Even if it is in the hereafter! Thank you for letting me join! |

Posted - May 26 2006 : 2:29:14 PM Welcome, Aunt George,
What a lovely setting you are creating for your girls. How old are they? It sounds like the three of you have a wonderful time together. Treasured memories for all. I know you will love living our your reminences here with everyone else. They will inspire and encourage and pray and teach and support and help you laugh and much, much, much more. It's wonderful. Looking forward to hearing all about your piece of the farm in the city. (you know, at one time that land was a farm many, many, many years ago, you have what is left and are treating it with the respect it deserves.) :o)
Blessings on your memories in the making with your daughters.

Posted - May 24 2006 : 08:50:50 AM Hello all and thank you so much for the warm, farmgirl welcome! This is such a great group of girls here. Have really had some wonderful emails already. Makes a day a wee bit brighter! I hope you don't mind if this is a collective group thank you rather than individual email thank yous. My hands can only hold up for limited times...carpal tunnel. Merryday, don't give up on raising your littlies as farmgirls. I just do the best I can with my two sweet babies! They love digging and planting and watching the flowers grow. They also love smelling my rose bush and gently placing ladybugs on the roses whenever they find them. They have a little toad home near the roses too. They love that. You can make one out of a partially buried terracotta flower pot! Toads need a little cool respite all of their own! My girls are developing a love of antiques and second hands too. I didn't have any junkin' partners, so I'm raising two of them! LOL Well again, thank you all for your smiles and welcomes. This is a great place to pull up a chair, sip some tea and have a linger longer!
Many hugs, Georgann |

Posted - May 22 2006 : 5:51:23 PM Howdy from fellow newbie! I too am doing my best to raise my own little farmgirl (although it appears a lot of "farmgirl" is in her genes - she loves bugs and the dirt and the wind in her hair!) and would love any suggestions you can share on the best ways to start out. Welcome!

Posted - May 22 2006 : 1:13:57 PM Hello Georgann! Welcome to the forum! I guess this would apply to you - "You can take the girl away from the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the girl!!" I am glad you are sharing your love of farm life with your girls. They are very lucky.
