Hi my name is Pennie, I am proud to be a farm chick! We have a small farm in the foothills of the Olympic Peninsula Washington State. When our farm was orginally homesteaded in the 1940's, skill and hard work were much "a way of life." We purchased the land in 1999 and began the project that would become Nouveau Farm. We were guided by a pioneering spirit and a desire to preserve family farming values. It wasn't long before the farm was once again up and running. From March through November our Certified Organic Salad and Herb mix is available at local markets to grace many a plate with a scrumptionus variety of colors, textures and tastes. Skill and a love for hard work continue to serve us well, as we do our best to serve others.

God bless Farmers

Hi Pennie,
Welcome! Are you any where near the lavender farms? I've been following them for years and hope to make it to the festival someday. I'm curious what most of them do with their lavender? It sounds like you have an amazing farm yourself. We are just trying to fight off the rain on the east coast, all the farmers are swimming in mud, seed has washed away and we are all trying to plant...again!

Take care,
Marjorie

Hi Lynda,
Thank you for the warm welcome! I just love this Farmgirl Connection, everybody is so warm and friendly. It reminds me of our fairly small town of Port Angeles where everyone is so friendly and laidback. After moving here from Seattle I was amazed that pretty much every time we'd go into a store or whatever that the people that work there would talk to us for as long as we wanted. Also, in the grocery store the checkers ask me about my son who is in the Army. When I go back to Seattle I really notice how aggressive people drive and you just don't have the warmth from people there.

My chicks are so funny! I read that they don't like to drink water that has alot of minerals in it so I've been giving them my filtered water but then 5 minutes later there's wood shavings in it. The Sicilian Buttercup rooster keeps standing on top of the water bottle and peering out at us. Luckily I have chicken wire on the top so it doesn't get out. I think all the chicks are getting bored so this weekend I'm going to try and set-up a small area with a fence and chicken coop until I can get a bigger one built. On Toolbelt Diva this afternoon she was going to show a woman how to build a fence so I set the recorder for that show and I'm going to go up there and watch that. I wish she'd do a show on building a chicken coop!
Take care!
Cheryl

Hi, Pennie, Cheryl & Jacueline,

Welcome to the Farmgirl Connection. As Karin said, it is pretty easy to navigate and anyone here will be able to help you, so don't feel bad, we all started out new and had to find our way through.

What an exciting post, to have three new farmgirls all at once. This is so much fun to meet so many like-minded and heart-felt women in the world of being a farmgirl. I'm sure you girls will feel at home at once. Feel free to join in any of the topics and just keep posting as you feel the need to keep chatting. Some do contact each other with their personal email addresses, but I think most post their heart and soul here. It is a loving group of women friends who have either been there and done that, or are going through a similar situation so you can rest assured that you will find comfort and solice, hope and laughter, inspriration and encouragement, prayer and support from everyone here.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and your adventures of being a farmgirl and learning more from your experiences.

Blessings to each of you in your own path of country living as a farmgirl.

In His hands,
Lynda L

Pray in faith and you will not live in doubt.

Thank you both Pennie and Karin for writing me. Do you continue to write like this, on this page or do we just save eachothers emails and write personally to eachother. I know that sounds funny, but I haven't ever done this before.

Welcome Jacqueline! This site is very easy to navigate, you'll be sailing through in no time. Wow, you sure pack a lot into your 10 acres! My sister has 10 acres in FL and all she has is 3 Rottweilers and a few rattlesnakes. (Ew, I DON'T go out in her yard much!!)
I am sure you will love chatting across the fence with everyone here. These women are the best!

Hi Jacqueline, I agree that it will be fun to talk to other women who are also farmgirls. It seems at times that we are a vanishing breed!
It is so easy to be tied up with family and farm. Having friends with similar things in common is very plesant!

Hi, My name is Jacqueline I am from Southern Oregon we have about 10 acres. We raise beef cattle for our own consumption and we have laying hens and I am a 4h leader for swine.(this being my first year doing it. I am kind of nervous). I am new to all of this and have never joined a online group. I thought that it would be fun to talk with other women who are also farmgirls. This is hard to come by. I wasn't brought up on a farm, let alone taught how to preserve and raise my own animals. I yearned for it all my life and my mother inlaw taught me how to preserve about 24 years ago and ever since then, I have been hooked. As the years go by I also became more organic in the way that I think and eat. This is why we raise our own beef, pork and chickens. We live in a pretty rural place but I have found it hard still to find a friend that is similar to me. So I thought this is the next best place. I am not sure quite yet how to use this site, but I am sure it will getting easier as I go.

Hi Vicki
We are practically neighbors. We just bought a Farm Collie puppy.
I plan on creating a Farmgirl Chapter and am waiting for the information to arrive.
I have a sister that lives in Bothell.
We were hoping to start putting up our third green house but that rain slowed up down. My husband even took the week off from his work at the Bangor Sub. base..... well it is Washington and that is why it's so green!

Hi,
I'm also new here and on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, in Port Angeles. We moved here 4yrs ago from Seattle and I've been wanting to get some chickens since we moved here. I finally got some new little Silkie Bantam's, 5 of them, two weeks ago and have been learning how to take care of them since then. Yesterday I picked up 2 Sicilian Buttercup chicks which are about 6 weeks old, one looks to be a rooster with the cup shaped crown. So now I have 2 boxes in the house with chicks and badly need to find some kind of bigger container for them! I also need to start working on building a chicken coop and I know nothing about any of this! I sure am having fun with it though. These chicks are so funny, never realized how much personality they have.

I bought one of MJ's magazines a couple weeks ago, loved it and ended up going on ebay and finding and buying her book which I got the other day and I love it!! She mentioned this book "Living with Chickens: Everything you need to know to raise your own backyard flock" and I just won the auction to get that book on ebay too. I was also excited to find this forum and I'm sure I'll learn alot from you all! I've got 10 acres, nine of it is woods but I'm working on getting a garden going and am excited about becoming a true farmgirl! By the way, I see under people's names "Farmgirl at Heart", "True Blue Farmgirl", etc. How is it determined whether someone is a True Blue Farmgirl or a Farmgirl in Training or Farmgirl at Heart?

Hi Pennie,

Welcome to the group! I am new to the group myself and I am enjoying meeting and talking with such nice people; I think you will really like it here! I live in Bothell on a 2.25 acre veggie farm so we are practically neighbors! My husband and I were in Bremerton yesterday, we took our Border Collie, Arya over to our friends farm and we did some sheep herding. We lucked out and got done right before the rain came.

Your farm sounds great and I am really impressed that you have your own organic salad and herb mix; very cool! Do you plan on joining or creating your own Farmgirl Chapter?

Pennie - Welcome! How fun that you have a working farm - salad and herbs sound like they are both beautiful to look at and tasty - what a great idea!

I just know you'll love it here. Enjoy!!!

XOXO, Libbie

Hello Pennie and also welcome. I am also new to this site. Your place does indeed sound wonderful. I will be in Seattle the end of July for about 3 weeks! So I will get a look at your end of the world. I lived on a dairy farm for 15 years, wasn't very mature when I married, so we didn't make it work, but it sure did give me a good look at how hard a farmer's life is. People just don't appreciate the fact that farmers work 24/7!!! I support all farmers!! And am now mature enough to want to get back to some of those roots.

Welcome aboard, this is a very supportive forum!! Georgette
