Hello, farmgirls! I've just "enlisted" and want to say WOW! What a fantastic place this is!
I'm in NE Oregon, close to the Washington border. We live on 20+ acres, with DD and DS (and DH, of course!) I garden and split wood and LOVE to cook. I'm hoping that there are other farmgirls in the area - NE Oregon and SE Washington - that I could get together with. Looking forward to getting to know you.... |

Hi, Karen. You will learn alot on this site. I hope you meet kindred spirits close by. I was raised a townie also, but it just seemed my soul was country, and that is where I am most at home. I love the heirloom varieties too. I am hoping to pick up some seeds from the seed savers in Decorah, Iowa this spring. Can't wait to get out into the yard..the bloodroot is blooming now. Just broke my shoulder blade though, so not too efficient at digging right now.

Thanks all for the warm welcome!
We haven't had the $$ to do much with our land yet, so we lease it out in the spring/summer for cows. We're hoping to start our own herd one day. We have horses (that never get ridden!) and the usual dogs, cats, and chickens, and have recently adopted 2 bummer kids (supposed to be the children's responsibility, but I'm sure you know how that goes - guess who gets up for the 1 AM feeding?!). I've got a small orchard - some apples, peaches, and plums - and am looking to get some berries going this spring. Love to garden - flowers and veggies - and have a little cobbled-together greenhouse that's starting to get full of flats! I'm really getting interested in the "heirloom/open-pollinated" varieties of things - more flavor, etc., and I love the history of them. It's funny - I was raised on the East Coast as a "townie" but never quite fit in. About 25 years ago we moved to Oregon, I met my husband (who was raised the 'country way') and have never missed the East. My family, who still lives back East, calls me "Mrs. Greenjeans" cos I'm SO different from them - but that's okay, I take it as a compliment. I love digging in the dirt in the spring and watching the flowers bloom and the sound of frogs by the creek.
Man, I'm long-winded!! So I'd better shut up and go feed the goats now!

Welcome it's nice to see another Orgonian sign up. Tells us about your place, do you keep animals? What do you garden?
My daughter and I garden at home and run a retail nursery in town.
We have had the pleasure of meeting Julia from Reedsport and her daughter Emily and it's really nice getting together with people that have the same values and interests as ourselves.
I hope we get to meet you in the future and welcome to the sight.

Hey Karen! Welcome on board! Glad to have another Oregonian here.
I am down on the coast, in Reedsport. We have a OR Chapter of farmgirls, the Yarn and Garden Farmgirl Society. We would love to have you join. We are spread out all over, so we don't get together often. In fact we have only met once, but will be meeting again in Eugene on May 6.
