Hi everyone! I'm so glad to have found this place. Although I've lived in Iowa the past 11 years, I was born and raised in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan, or da U.P. as those of us from up dere say. So, I guess in my heart I will always be a Northern gal. I don't have a farm yet, but hope to someday soon. For now I garden quite a bit in my back yard and my animals consist of three dogs and two peach faced lovebirds. Molly Maguire is 10 years old and a purebred Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Jessie Chessie is around 4 or 5 and half Chesapeake and half Lab, and Mr. Mimi is a mutt around 10 years old.
I am interested in growing flowers as well as vegetables, knitting, sewing and refinishing furniture. My Grandparents were farmers, and my parents always had a huge garden when I was a kid, so I guess I inherited that farming gene. Guess that's all for now.

I am from SE Iowa, Oskaloosa to be exact.
The neighbors down the street have a pair of older Bassets. They are just so adorable, especially when they try to run and their ears start flying.
My Lovebirds are loud at times, but you get used to them. They were a gift. Not sure if I would've picked them as a pet if I had been looking for a pet. They love to feed Molly, the Chesapeake and largest of my dogs, birdseed.

My Maggie is a rescued basset..she is nervous but sweet and loveable..and my youngest dogs..the other two are on the elderly side. We have one rescued cat too..
I think alot more people should get pound dogs and cats. My Maggie is obviously pure basset and since I don't show dogs, or breed, or care about paperwork I think she is as good or better than any other basset.
We have never had birds..but I love to watch them. I always thing maybe someday I would like to have a cage of little finches..they look so perky and sweet.
I love how Mimi got his name..cute!! Kids will do that. I have had some animals with odd names! I have learned to not let my two youngest sons name any animal likely to stay. They usually get to name ram lambs and buckling goats. The girls put more thought into it, or maybe want to please me more..they do a pretty good job picking. Sometimes funny names are the best though. We have a neighborhood cat named STumpy. He has a bobtail and is just the most ratty looking, wild cat. I know we feed him..there is no way our outside cat, Pumpkin, could eat all that dissapears.

Welcome Gale
I also have to pound puppies, a pitbull/lab mix Rosa age 7 (she got the resesive genes from both side, not an aggresive bone in her body and can't swim to save her life) and a pure breed golden retriever Casey age 3 (Little brain Big heart)it warms my heart to hear about people who rescue dogs are a bad situation or from the pound. Rosa was abused as a puppy and is afraid of men and casey was kept tied up for most of her life. How do you like your love birds? We bought a pair for my mom when i was in high school and did not know how much noise they made. i loved to hate those birds.

So good to hear from all of you. Since you're wondering, here's the story of how Mimi got his name. I got him as a puppy and hadn't named him yet, so it was looking like his name was going to be dog. No good creative ideas were coming forth. A friend of mine had a 2 yr. old little boy who liked to play with the puppy and he started calling him me me puppy. The dog starting coming around whenever he heard this, so Mimi became his name. Guess if you're not fast enough, someone else will name your dog for you! I added the Mr. to his name because people always thought he was a girl.

Good Morning, Gale!!

I, too, can't wait to hear the story of Mr. MiMi.

Your positive comments on pound dogs is so true....they are great pets. I'm always amazed at how many 'mutts' or 'pound dogs' compete in agility courses or other sports. They often are the best out of them all.

I look forward to chattin' with ya' around the forum!

Blessings
Catherine

Welcome Gale, I'm a newbie here too, but love it so far! I have many similar interests to yours too.

Jenny, we have a basset hound named Rocky. They are pretty cool dogs to have, but I do like bigger dogs too! LOL

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Welcome Gale! SOUnds like you will fit right in here! This is a wonderful place with lots of great gals, and a few guys. I don't have a farm either but have a double lot in town that allows me to grow veggies and flowers. Have a couple fruit trees and berries. So it is my mini farm. See ya round the forum. Julia V.

Hello Alaska Farm Girl! My brother spent some time in Alaska when he was working for a lumber mill in Oregon. They sent him to help out at a mill in Ketchikan when they were short handed, just when he was supposed to be coming home to the U.P., too. Skagway is close to B.C. isn't it?

As you can tell I am a fan of the large dogs. Just afraid I would accidently step on a little one. I do dog rescue and had a small poodle overnight at our house. He would only sleep if he could sleep next to me and I kept worrying I would accidently roll over on him, so I decided little dogs probably aren't for me. The big ones just push back if you get too close.

Pound puppies and rescue dogs are the way to go. They seem to appreciate it so much that someone cared enough to save their life. Jessie Chessie was a pound puppy. He insisted on sitting in my lap as I drove home with him in my pickup even though he was way too large and smelled terrible. Two baths later, and let me tell you that was interesting since he'd never taken a bath before, and he smelled and looked great. He was supposed to go on to rescue, but ended up staying. He had a little problem with submissive urination. For the most part he's gotten over this, but if he gets really scared, he will still make a puddle. The sound of hammering especially scares him, so something must have happened to him while he was a stray. If they could only talk sometimes, the stories they would tell.
