I was transplanted to the desert about 15 years ago and am still trying to figure out how to make anything grow here.
I grew up on a small farm in Western New York and miss it terribly, and feel like a fish out of water living here, so when I happen to come across Mary Jane's book at my local library last week I grabbed it up. I loved it. I've just ordered my own copy and was so excited when I showed my library copy to my 'also transplanted' neighbor she ordered one for herself.
I'm very interested in the environment, I'm a partial vegetarian (I eat fish and eggs) and I drive a Prius. It's nice to find other like minded woman where you're not considered 'different'.
I look forward to getting to know all of you. |

Hey Destiny! I'm a tree-hugger in Dallas. I'm into the East Texas forests, my fiance, however is OBSESSED with the west texas desert (even though he's never been there, but he's from Nevada...). Good luck and have fun with MaryJane's!

Welcome. It must be hard to adjust to such a different climate but as Michele said, you should find someone or a group (master gardeners?) who can help. Glad to have you here.

Thank you everyone. I'm really enjoying meeting everyone and reading all the posts.
I laugh everytime I read something about hanging out clothes because of my situation. With the intense sun and heat here, I've strung a line back and forth across the end of my covered patio. That way the clothes get dry but they don't get 'scorched'. And yes I'm probably the only person in my zip code that hangs out her clothes even though I have a perfectly good (energy star) dryer. My husband always uses the dryer and I always hang up whatever I wash. I'm still trying to convert him. Maybe someday.
PS. I call myself a tree hugger, it usually gets a laugh. Of course here everyone considers the trees pretty special because 20-30 years ago there weren't any.

Hello Destiny, welcome. You have come to the right place. I wish I knew something about growing in the desert. I spent alot of time in the desert in Arizona MANY years ago but wasn't gardening at the time. I am sure someone here may know something to help you or direct you to someone who can.

Welcome Destiny!! I know what you mean about feeling different. The other day my mom called me an Amish bread making, garden loving tree hugger!! She's just teasing my of course and doesn't mean anything by it-she just thinks it's funny how I am. My neighbors think I'm crazy for making most of my stuff from scratch and think I'm basically wasting my time. When I have my clothes out on the line I get told, "you know-there is a dryer for that". It's very nice to come here and feel welcome and surrounded by people that have the same interests and thoughts. Glad your here to join us!!! |

I am so glad you found us Destiny! You are going to fit right in I am sure. There is bound to be another someone here trying to cope with desert gardening, and I for sure several dozen vegetarians. And we ALL love MJ's book!! You sure won't be considered "different" here. Just one of the gals!! Welcome!!
