Posted - Mar 01 2006 : 11:10:55 AM Hello. I started looking over this forum earlier in the week, and I can't keep my mouth shut so I had to sign up to post! I'm a city girl, born and raised in Rochester. I live now 5 blocks from my parents and 7 blocks from my grandparents. I've always wanted to live in the country, but I don't know that it will happen anytime soon if ever. I married a guy whose interests are very different. I'm on the lookout for ways to earn income from home that don't involve a lot of startup capital. In the meantime, I'm trying to enjoy what I can do after work in my own house and yard. I'm planning to plant a lot, I've tried making cheese on the stove, and all kinds of handiwork. I hope to learn a lot from this forum and enjoy farm living vicariously through those of you who have land of your own. If there's anyone out there in the Rochester area, I'd love to get in touch with you.

Posted - Mar 06 2006 : 3:00:45 PM Amie, Welcome from antoher NY'er. I live in the middle of the state, only an hour from the real geographical center. I am trying hard to convince my husband too that we need to be more farm oreintated....no luck for now, but like you I am trying to do everything that I can to farm without the actual farm lifestyle. Being a fram girl is acondition of the heart. There is a wealth of information this forum...I am sure you will find it a great source of information and warmth:)

Posted - Mar 06 2006 : 04:08:08 AM Hi Amie, I live over near the Vermont border on the other side of the state. This website is the only one I have ever participated in and I have thoroughly enjoyed it over the last 8 months I have been in. The people involved have been wonderful and a mountain of information. There are alot of folks like you who do not currently own farms and there are alot who are experienced veterans. Welcome, Marianne |

Posted - Mar 02 2006 : 05:49:47 AM Thank you, everyone, for being so friendly. I'm so glad to see that there are other people getting started at a not-so-young age. I'm just past 30 and I was already starting to feel old! Catherine, I think you're right that my husband will come around, especially if I try to make it fun for him as well as me. Rose Marie, I know that clock you mention. Midtown Mall is right in the heart of downtown and I've heard that it was the first indoor shopping mall in the country. My grandmother worked at McCurdy's department store there for many years. Did you ever go at Christmas time to ride the monorail through Magic Mountain and see Santa? That was a big deal when I was a kid, and I've heard it was even bigger in the 60s.

Posted - Mar 01 2006 : 7:01:50 PM Welcome Amie!! I married a small town boy....not really city but definitely not farmboy. He has enjoyed so much watching our girls enjoy their animals and he's especially impressed with their life skills. Years ago he would have told you we would NEVER have a goat, NEVER have a pig, NEVER have chickens, NEVER..... Today, he is a happy Daddy of those and more and NEVER complains! It was a kind of "frog in a pot" situation.....It all happened over time and he never felt it!
I look forward to chatting with you at future posts!
Blessings Catherine

Posted - Mar 01 2006 : 5:13:38 PM Hi Amie! I am also a city girl turning really soon into a farm girl. Dunno what the heck I'm doing yet but someone is giving me 2 goats, I've got some plants started indoors, my husband's looking for an oxen and a yoke for me (haha), I'm scared to death but excited at the same time. These wonderful ladies on this site talked me out of me being petrified and actually have me looking at it as a wonderful adventure! I'm in my early 50's so am starting late but can't wait. My grandparents used to live in Rochester (I think it was Main St.) and I used to visit them every summer. I clearly remember the huge revolving clock at a mall that had dolls from different countries for each hour and then when the clock struck noon all the doors would open, the clock would rotate and show all the different dolls in their country's garb. I'm here in central NY. Welcome aborad from one NY newbie to another!
