Big Hello from Iowa to all you Farmgirls.
I've been a leader since the fall of last year but never used the Farmgirl Connection. I've sent email back and forth with Cindylou and had a chance to meet a few wonderful Farmgirl leaders from other parts of Iowa. It will be so nice to be connected to a larger forum. My group is called Friendship County Farmgirls. We have 3 regular members and some friends and neighbors that drift in and out, depending on what project we are working on.
I live on a farm in rural Iowa. We moved here from the city in 2001 to live the farm dream. I used to be a very busy RN. Now I'm a relaxed farmer. (Well most of the time) I raise organic veggies, oats, corn and keep Pekin ducks, chickens, Turkeys, Cows and a 470+ pound Yorkshire sow named "Dora" Piggers. She is truely a joy.

Thanks for the welcome and support of another pig lover. Piggers really is a doll and I swear she is smarter than all the dogs I've ever know and about half the people. :) I take it you were referring to the pancakes. You haven't really lived til you've seen the joy in a pigs' eyes when you serve her pancakes in bed! It's always so nice to meet another tender heart (where animals are concerned) and I hope to get to know you well.

It's wonderful to meet you. We are really pretty close. Sounds like you'll have a full plate over the summer getting your new farm ready. I certainly know how that is. We too bought an older farm in 2001 and have been renovating something or other ever since. LOL Do you guys have any specific plans for your new place yet? I love the farms over in your area. Gentle rolling hills and lots of nice tree stands. I'm a retired RN from UIHC so I've had a chance to see much of your area. My chapter (Friendship County Farmgirls) have recently been making soap and I have to say I'm hooked. Are you interested in soapmaking at all? Either experienced or wanna learn? The 5th annual Iowa Soapers Guild Gathering is being held in Story Iowa (near Ames) on April 1,2006. I'll be attending and you are certainly welcome to come too. I think it would be a great outting for a couple of like minded Farmgirls. If so, email me and I'll fill you in on the details. It's so good to hear from someone so close.

Hi Jane from another Iowian, I live in central Iowa near Iowa City.
My husband and I just bought the homestead of 8 acres that was part of my parents farm. We are cleaning it up and hope to move there eventually. It is good to have another Iowian on the forum. Welcome. |

Welcome to the forum Jane. I am new here myself, and loving it. We live over in Illinois. Moved here almost 2 yrs ago. We escaped suburbia to live our dream too. I can't wait to get to know you and everyone else

I had a pen pal who lived in Lost Nation in the late 1970s. I actually met her once (1979?) and thought that part of Iowa was very scenic. The pen pal's name was Bonnie Weets. Ever hear of her?

Howdy back at you Catherine. Cookie sounds like such a goodgirl. I love my Piggers too. I've had her since she was 3 days old and a whopping 5 pounds. She spent the early days indoors with us as part of the family. Her "hut" was a large dog crate and she was litter trained. She is just so incredibly smart it is amazing. When she got to be about 150 pounds we reluctantly decided that it was time for a move to the barn. I spent a few cold nights out in the barn with her as she got used to not being around family every minute of the day. But we all adjusted, finally. So, the answer is yes she runs right up to us the minute we go out for a visit. I brush her hair every day and often am coaxed into a full on belly rub. On cold nights we make sure she is warmly tucked in and given a bedtime snack of warm pancakes. (no syrup) Her fav!!! She eats a well balanced pig diet and deserves a treat now and then.
I take a lot of ribbing from the farmer we got her from for "spoiling" her. I'm sure he'd have a laugh if he knew I served her pancakes in bed! Oh well, I really do love her and I can take the laughs. Any friend of a pig is a friend of mine! Thanks for the welcome.

Howdy Jane!!!
So glad to meet ya'. I like your relaxed farmer description.....it can fit all us farmgirls in two ways....One, being that we are relaxed in our manner of farming and, second, we are relaxed because we are farmgirls!!
I have a potbelly named Cookie. I just love the way she runs up to me in the mornings. But, from the sounds of Dora, she probably doesn't run up to ya'. I just love my pig. Don't tell the "ladies" but I think I like watchin' the pig more than watchin' the hens!!
