I'm so glad to be a part of this!
Brief introduction - grew up on a farm - showed horses in 4-H at the county fair - picked my share of raspberries and strawberries, and helped my grandmother in her HUGE garden. She made sure we girls knew how to sew and can.
But I never learned to make pie crust -- every time I tried it came out like cardboard.
I got married, had two babies, a house on a 1-acre lot in the country, an overgrown organic garden, raised Angora rabbits and a dozen Aracuana chickens.... tried my hand at spinning and machine knitting. Working full time in information technology, it was hard to find time to get "professional" at any of my farm enterprises.
Fast forward twenty years and my two daughters are grown, I'm a grandmother, first husband was NOT a farmboy and is history now! (LOL) I said I would never get married again till I found a farmer, and sure enough 3 weeks later a single farmer showed up....
And I had to learn to bake a pie. He inherited his family farm (in Michigan, 5 hours away) and there are over three hundred apple trees -his favorite pie is apple. I found a new pie crust recipe with "never fail" in the title, so I tried it - and within a year I entered some pies in the county fair and won "best of show" in the pie division!
Is there a place somewhere here to post recipes? I would be glad to share!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone, this is such a nice neighborhood!
Please don't be jealous of my apple trees - like anything else on the farm, they are a mixed blessing... In good years we actually get some apples but because we live so far away and can't get to the farm every weekend, we don't spray, organic or otherwise, and there are too many trees to put maggot traps on all of them, and we don't trim or fertilize....
So what we usually get is a lot of small wormy apples that aren't worth the time to pick or peel. Last year the weather was perfect, though, and I probably got about 6 or 7 bushels of good apples. Jonathon, Golden Delicious, Stark Crimson Delicious, MacIntosh, Grimes Golden, Greening, and Ida Red are the main varieties. The deer and other animals love them - and so do the hunters and mushroom pickers that trespass on the land when we're not around... The apple trees are old and we will probably have to cut some down or bulldoze them to reduce the scab and rust diseases, to keep in good stead with the neighboring commercial orchards..... Weekend farming is too much like work! LOL We haven't made cider yet but maybe next year...
But my husband's favorite is apple pie too. He exaggerates and tells his friends I won a ribbon at the STATE fair (big difference from the little county fair)!

Welcome Brightmeadow!! It took me a while to get the right pie crust too and I finally have one that works for me every time!! My DH favorite pie is apple but he is very picky and has told me several times that mine is the best he has ever tasted so I must be doing something right!!! We would love to hear yours, we have a recipe board that you can post it at. All your apple trees, I'm jealous...I would love to have an orchard, how lucky you are. |

Welcome Brightmeadow! Glad to have you on board! I only have two apple trees! WOw! Do you make cider? Some friends and I bring our apples together and spend the day pressing cider. Then we split it. I never last long at our house. Yummmy!!! Please do post yoiur pie recipe. I would like to give it a shot! See ya round the forum.! Julia V.

Welcome Brighmeadow! Pie crust is my nemesis too (and biscuits). I have progressed to "fairly middlin'" but have yet to make them as good as my other family-ladies. Looking forward to hearing your "no fail" pie crust recipe!

I don't think I got over 28...that is alot of grooming!!! But now I have three nice hutches and wouldn't go over three again I don't think...maybe when the kids are grown. The one buck i have has a cottony coat..not at all good..and I miss my doe with her wonderful silky white wool..she was the best. I had a black english doe one time that was just fantastic too. I really need to do some looking and get good ones if I am going to get more..I don't want three like the one I have now!! I love to make yarn that is one ply wool and one ply angora..my favorite sock yarn.

I was up to 44 bunnies before I had to move out to Michigan(work related) then when I came back to Ohio I realized that two rabbits in separate cages would be plenty... I don't have any now, taking the dog with us or finding someone to feed him when we are gone is enough hassle. I love the idea of livestock, but right now in my life it doesn't fit! I keep toying with the idea of getting a few more bunnies, but common sense (and my husband) keep saying no..

Hooray..you have so much in common with us...how fun to meet another kindred spirit! I have had angora rabbits for years now..only one buff french buck right now..but would like to get a couple more (does) if I could find some nice ones..was up to ALOT of them a few years ago..then a big move across a few states made me get down to just two and one (a very old doe) has since died.
Pie baking..my favorite!!
