Somebody out there help me!
I'm new here. I used to be a secretary. Then my husband had me quit to help him in the construction business. Now he's taking an early retirement and we bought 30 acres of land. Here's the catch...I'm a city girl!!!!
Well my husby is going to try his hand at Christmas Trees and perhaps landscape trees, aside from having a few cows. He wants me to have a big garden (I'm game!) and I would especially like to try my hand at pumpkins. He bought a tractor so he said that I could maybe be back in the house by 9 at night from the fields. Anything to make it easier for me he says.
We thought maybe we would name the farm. I thought The Loser Farm had a ring and fit me or the You Gotta B Kidding Farm but now we're thinking maybe of One Cow Farm.
I'm learning about tillers and tractors and bush hogs etc. I'm also reading up on organics, composts, etc. But I just can't decide if I want to take on goats or chickens.
Anyway, any clues, hints, etc. will be most helpful. And *gulp* keep me in yer prayers!

Welcome Rose! I enjoy "One Cow Farm" because it reminds me of the phrase, "just a One-Horse Town". Hehee... Anyway, this is definately the place to be to get all the help online there is. We are glad to have you! And don't be scared - you're going to do amazng things! The likes of which no citygirl has yet seen!!!

Well you ladies are all certainly friendly and helpful here. I'm enjoying being here already!
I'm in St. Johnsville, NY. I like the sounds of the "ease" of raising chickens but when I was last at Barnes and Nobles I was flipping thru a book and it was showing rubbing vaseline on the hens head (I forget what the heck that part of the floppy head is) and then about lice and I got "chickened" out. Hahahahaha.
I was also wondering about hawks and chickens. Do they go after them?
I'm going to look up the organic section of this site. There's so much I want to read up on here but I'm taking it little by little or I'll never be able to remember where I posted!
You've all been great and thanx a bunch.

Hi Rose and welcome. How wonderful that your husband bought you a tractor. I wish we had that in the funds right now. I've never had chickens or goats but several people here have them so they will have to give you advice on that. I do have cows though and do what Jenny suggested, have a good fence put up or you'll be sorry. We have 8 cows on our property and there are 2 of them that ALWAYS get out. Good thing the neighbors don't mind . My dad and DH are really good at Mickey Mousing the fence back together since no one will listen to me and mom and that we actually fork out the money to FIX the fence, but that's another post. You will have so much fun on your farm.

As far as the garden, there are a lot of experienced organic gardeners here and then there are quite a few of us that are new to it. I've gardened with my mom for several years but embarrassed to say it wasn't organic so I'm starting from scratch. Everyone is so good about sharing tips and ideas and if you have a question, just ask. Someone here will know what to do!!! Welcome to the forum.

Rose-
Wow! How exciting for you and your husband!! I like "UGottaBee Kidding Goat Farm", since after all goats are called "kids" anyway...

I really cant offer you any advise anyway, Im only 18 and still in my prayers.... ;]

Best Of Luck!

Hi Rose! I love One Cow Farm... kinda like a "one car parade". :) I'd go for chickens, you can sell eggs, have meat, and besides goats are naughty! LOL Oh, and chicken manure is the BEST for putting on an asparagus bed too! Pumpkins are fun, but keep in mind they take a ton of room. Big garden can also mean big weeding. Always mulch between rows, it keeps in moisture and keeps weeds down. If a few weeds pop up they are easier to pull too! We use lawn clippings, which are good for enriching the soil and growing earthworms. Never use grass that has gone to seed though! You might try going to your county extention agent for info on what grows best in your zone, how to's on chickens/goats and any questions you have. They can also put you in touch with other folks in your community who are doing similar things! Sounds like a grand adventure Rose!

Rose,

Welcome! I was excited to see that you are frmo NY and even more excited to see that you live in central NY? I live near Cooperstown....where are you? I agree with Aunt Jenny, goats would be fun, and I love the name "one cow farm". Wish my husband was as excited about having a farm, i am the one who is gun-ho, he is not convinced yet that even chickens would be a good idea. I will keep working on him....or just go get some and then he wil deal with it haha Good luck with all your endevors, you have surely come to the right place to learn about farming and freindship :)Peace,
Stacy

I'm in central NY state. It's ok if we get more cows...we'll start with one lol.
Now...can u all direct me to where you get your seeds? Is it Johnnies? Harris? Territorial? Dollar Store? K-Marts?
And, where is the best place to find used farm equipment/implements?
Thankee, thankee,

Hey Rose,

Welcome. Your hubby sounds like a hoot! Just don't get too overwhelmed. I love the name, "One Cow Farm",but what if you decide to get more at some point? Where in NY State are you?

Wow Rose! I'm totally jealous! Sounds like a grand adventure you have ahead of you! With the help of your husband and all the ladies here, we'll have you turned into a country girl in no time! I wish you the best of luck on your exciting journey! One Cow Farm is a great name! And Aunt Jenny, you still only have one? No Mini-Mona yet? When I have kids, I'll be lucky to have as many people concerned about my pregnancy as Miss Mona does! She's a star! hehe! See, I'm even invading Rose's post talking about her! I'm really not one to give too much advice on farming. I'm mainly a farmgirl at heart at the moment, but I'll help in any way I can! I'm going to be an intern at an organic vegetable farm this growing season and I'll share all I learn with you!

Much love,
Laura

Hi Rose...what an adventure you have ahead of you!!! and sounds like fun. One Cow farm sounds like my place!! (I mean the ONE cow) You really should get chickens..they are easy..and goats are so fun..and a great way to get ready to have cows. My biggest hint/clue is this: build your pens, fences and animal housing before a single animal comes on your place! otherwise you spend all your time fixing fence and catching loose critters!! How do I know..hmmmmm I learn most everything the hard way!
Good luck and I am glad you are here!!
